Pre-Christmas ramblings and toddling-bra photos, hehe!

Okay I have a lot to update on yet again, but possibly very little time to do it in, as Arthur is halfway through his short morning nap already.

I cancelled his MMR last Monday. I did some more research on the Sunday and decided to go ahead with it, but then I happened to get my attention drawn to the potential side-effects. Some babies are lucky and don't get any, or only very mild ones, and Arthur didn't really have problems with his previous vaccinations. But you never know, and they can be a bit unpleasant, so I checked them out. The measles part tends to kick in around 1 week to 10 days after the jab, with most mothers saying 10 days. Little ones can get a measles-like rash, a mild fever and be off their food (though some mothers said their toddlers were vomiting too). That would have co-incided with travelling up to Neil's family for Christmas. GREAT timing! Then the mumps part is 3-4 weeks after the jab, again mild fever, off their food, general malaise, etc. That would co-incide with our trip to France to see my parents. I decided not to let Arthur have the jab before Christmas as some part of the holiday would potentially be complicated by naff side-effects. January is pretty much ruled out with his plaster casts, so our plan is to have him vaccinated with the MMR in February. We're happy enough with that. I'm sure I'll still feel nervous when we DO take him, but we'll just get it over and done with. I do want him protected against these nasties. So that is that! :)

I took him to the baby clinic to be weighed and measured on Friday. I figured it had been a while (I think he was last weighed at around 11 months, or probably more like 10.5 months) and I was curious to know what he measured at. I also needed to be sure he didn't exceed the limits for the car seat my parents still have for him in France. He was the oldest baby there - all the others in the waiting room were around 6 months, and some were teeny weeny! He was the picture of society and walked from other-mother's-knees to other-mother's-knees all round the waiting room, beaming at each person in turn with his biggest most charming smile! He loves to socialise and show off his cuteness, hehe! Everyone was smiling at him and complimenting him on his clever walking. He walked everywhere, both with his shoes on, and (once he took them off!) with just his socks on, on the shiny slippery floor. He had no trouble. He is doing great on the walking, and I only see him crawl once or twice every couple of days now. Waaah, my baby is growing up!

Oh, I know I'm getting off the point, but Arthur still loves going about the house with one of my nursing bras hanging from his mouth!!! Hehe! He used to crawl like that till he knelt on the bra that was trailing under him and stopped short! He LOVES my bras. I think they are sort of comforting to him, since they have some association with breastfeeding which is the ultimate comfort! :) I have two lilac coloured Elle Macpherson nursing bras (incidentally THE most fabulous nursing bras ever to be invented) which he particularly loves! Here are some photos of the little monkey man this morning toddling around with said bra hanging from teeth! ;)

He just walked around and around with that thing hanging there, and even stopped to play with his toys now and then before setting off again for another bra-swinging stroll!! Funny boy :)

Anyway, back to the baby clinic! So Arthur got weighed, and he has LOST weight!!!!!!!! A first for Arthur! I was concerned because I mean it's been nearly 3 months since he was last weighed, and he weighed MORE then!! He last weighed 23lbs 13oz, and so I expected him over 24lbs by now. I didn't think he would have gained much because he doesn't FEEL much heavier, and he has changed shape so dramatically lately, slimming right down and losing his baby chub. He now weighs 23lbs 5oz. The health visitor told me not to worry at all, because he has started walking and night weaned in that time, and also I am barely making any milk at all now so he's essentially not really getting breastmilk anymore as such. So she said it's to be expected. She said if I felt worried, I should take him back in 3 or 4 weeks to see if he's gaining any by then.

His weight now puts him just above the 50th percentile - exactly as he was at birth!!! I remember they told me breastfed babies usually go up into the nineties over the first 6 months and then during the second 6 they tend to plateau out until they are pretty much back in the percentile of their birth weight. At the time Arthur was 10 months old and soooooooooo chunky that I simply couldn't believe it would possibly happen, hehe! But it has! I have a lil lean toddler now, how amazing. I am not too worried as he's eating well and very energetic and active all the time. I think I will take him back somewhere in January when he doesn't have a plaster cast on. The health visitor said I could be giving him more cow's milk, as he doesn't really drink it. He just has it on cereal. He likes to sip at my glass of milk when I have breakfast and I offer him as much from that as he will take, but it's never much. I gave him a sippy cup with milk in the other day and he took a little but only as though it was water (which he still doesn't drink much of in the day). His best time for a drink is just before bedtime. He seems thirsty then and gulps loads of water down!

He still nurses as much as he wants to in the day, and whenever he wakes in the evening, but the midnight-5am thing where I don't nurse him is going well. He sometimes cries for a minute and other times just snuggles up and goes back to sleep without a peep. Lately he doesn't wake in the evening so ends up going all night without nursing. Last night he slept 7.45pm till 2.30am before his first waking!!! He was unsettled till 3.15am but after that he woke at 6am for a long breastfeed and then up for the day! :) He sometimes still wakes like crazy though, and is becoming a bit difficult to get to sleep at bedtime. Sometimes he just wants Daddy in the bed with us too, and then he settles quickly to sleep by himself. He's so cute :)

I LOVE it in the mornings when he wakes. He nurses, and then suddenly pops off the breast and says with a little gasp of excitement, "Dada!" and then he launches himself over my body to get to Daddy for a cuddle :) He likes to kiss us both on the lips (still giving those wide open kisses so far!) first thing, and last thing before sleep. He has initiated that himself, which we absolutely love!

He looooooves his daddy at the moment! He loves me just as much as usual, but he is really into spending time with Daddy and getting to Daddy in the morning after he nurses, and if he's doing something where he wants us watching him, he is particularly keen that DADDY is watching closely, hehe! Otherwise he gets kind of annoyed ;) It's so sweet.

Arthur is really starting to have a go at words at the moment. He hasn't really shown any interest or ability on the speech front until this last week or so, except for having said "mama" for EVER and "dada" for a long time too, and then "wow" from his toy. He now says, "hot" (haa), "ear" (eee) and has recently tried "clock" and his first two-syllable word - "oven" (ohh-un)!

Oh he's awake. Will try to finish later.

Back again! He's having his afternoon nap and I am eating a HUGE bowl of cornish clotted cream vanilla ice cream with bright sprinkles!! :) How I long for some hot chocolate fudge sauce but oh well, we don't have any.

Okay where was I? Arthur is doing all sorts of new stuff. He is really interested in anything using his hands. His hand-motor skills are really coming on. He can pick up tiny bits of thread from the (perpetually dirty) carpet with his pincer grasp now. He LOVES his bricks and stacking cups most of all, and likes to lay a "foundation" of bricks very carefully on the floor, but runs out of interest for building another layer on top! They have to be placed just so on the floor, he is so particular! He stacks 3 cups on top of each other with ease, and is working on putting another on top. He can stack the whole set of cups inside each other in the correct order (after a lot of wrong order attempts!).

Continuing his love of all things laundry, he now actually HELPS when I empty the dryer! I make piles all around me of the different types of items so that they are easier to put away. I usually have a pile of cloth wipes building up on my left leg and a pile of nappy inserts on my right leg. Quite out of the blue the other day, Arthur seemed to figure out that one pile was specifically for cloth wipes, and proceeded to fish all the cloth wipes out from amongst the laundry in the tumble dryer, and pile each one on the wipes pile on my lap as he found it! I was so amazed. Today he did the same thing when I asked him to find the wipes for Mummy, and then started on the nappy inserts pile! He is such a tidy boy :)

Arthur communicates a LOT now with his own sort of signs. He does double signs that he made up himself, which involve him pointing to himself if the thing he's trying to communicate involves him. If he wants a drink of his water, he points at it and then immediately to himself. If I ask him if he wants a drink of water then he smiles and looks all shy, which is his way of telling me I understood him correctly! If I get it wrong then he just tries again with more earnest expression and noises and pointing! He is pretty easy to understand with his signs though, he is very clear with his pointing and stuff now. If he wants to go upstairs he points at the stairs and then in to his chest with both pointy fingers at once.

He cut his lip yesterday, poor baby. He had wedged a jigsaw board into his bricks bucket and was tugging and tugging to get it out. Of course it came out suddenly and banged him in the mouth as it did so :( He cried but he never really has hysterics over hurting himself, even when he hurts himself quite badly. He is quickly consoled by me cuddling him and offering him the breast, even with a sore lip to suck with, poor Boo! His lip was bleeding on the inside and it swelled up SO much, I was surprised! He looked so different for a while last night, but it's less swollen today.

He is teething like crazy at the moment, but no visible action. He has had two bouts of "teething" since he got his last tooth, but I haven't seen any changes in his gums at all, and now we're on the third bout, and I'm wondering if anything will happen at all this time! He hasn't had a new tooth in what feels like AGES. I think he got his last one at 10 months, so it's been 3 months now, which is a while! He still has 2 at the bottom and four at the top. My mum said I had the same six teeth at one year old, and at 13 months I got my TOP two molars, while still only having two middle teeth at the bottom! Of course they all filled in fast at the bottom after that. I wonder if Arthur's teeth will follow the same pattern that mine did? Anyway I hope this bout of teething actually PRODUCES something. I hate seeing him teethe but not seem to get anything out of it.

What else? I'm sure there were other things! Arthur is trying to put some pieces in his jigsaw but I haven't seen him manage to get them in properly. Neil said he got a piece in properly yesterday when I was taking a nap.

Slightly dreading the trip to Neil's family this week. I can't believe Christmas is this weekend coming!!!! That sneaked up so suddenly! Next year we'll actually bother with Christmas decorations. It's such a faff and the house is so messy that it seems kind of pointless. Next year Arthur will be more interested in Christmas so it will be worth doing properly. We didn't have any decorations last year either, but then we were illlllllll. Although we STILL have the decorations up from Arthur's birthday party!!! That feels naughty somehow, but he loves the balloons - which are taking for EVER to go down! - and the fairy lights are festive anyways.

So we leave for Yorkshire on Thursday. It will take us 5-6 hours to drive there, which I am dreading. Ugh! I am quite sure Arthur will not be thrilled after about hour ONE. There seems to be so much to plan when travelling with a little one! It was so much easier the last time we went, as he was only 11 weeks old and just slept the whole way there and back, and we stopped once each journey for me to pop him on the breast and then he was back to sleep again! This time we need to take his lunch, entertainment, changes of clothes/nappies, drinks, snacks, etc, etc. And in any case, he is sure to be very very cross for a good part of the journey! He doesn't sleep in cars at all any more, unless he has missed a nap and is wiped out. And even then it's only 30 minutes at best. Urrrgh. I hope it isn't going to be too awful.

When we're at Neil's parents, we will have to put Arthur to sleep in the pack and play travel cot. This he will NOT like. I put him in that a week or so ago for his afternoon nap at Granny and Grandoug's when we went there for lunch, and he screamed for ages until I got him up. He looked so scared in there actually, even though I lay right next to it where he could see me. He isn't used to being seperated from me in any way, or restricted in a box, since he has never had to be either of those things. Which I am PROUD of! But it makes it hard for him/us when we have no other choice. Poor lovey. He shouldn't have to be seperate from me if he doesn't want to be, at his age. And I would hate to sleep in a box with walls when I'm used to a large bed without walls, so I don't blame him for feeling that way either. I hate that I can't lie with him as he dozes off, or lie with him to nurse him. But their beds are tiiiny and not safe for Arthur now he's launching himself about everywhere! We'd never all fit in the bed anyway. Poo. So I hope that doesn't go toooo awfully as well.

Okay Arthur is waking, and I think I have written pretty much what I came to say (I'm sure I've still forgotten something though!) so I'll post this now. Hopefully I'll write again before we go, but if I don't then I won't get to use a computer till I get back (sometime on the 26th I think). So I will update after Christmas. And I hope everyone has a LOVELY Christmas!!! :)

(urgh, not posted till almost MIDNIGHT because Arthur switched the computer off by the power button and then there was no time until now (desperately trying to finish the Christmas cards all evening!)! Thank goodness I had saved it to Word!)

13 months old!! Photos and movies :)

FINALLY a window of opportunity to update!!!

Oh my gosh, I have sooooooooooooooo many photos to post! Well, quite a lot anyway. They have been piling up, so some are from a couple of weeks ago. I will get to those in a bit.

Arthur turned 13 months old yesterday!!!! Wowee. I am waiting on a 13-month breastfeeding milestone blinkie (someone is making one for me) but as soon as I have it I will update my blinkie section with it! I found the CUTEST and most appropriate blinkie the other day - see it?! My Little Monkey! That's Arthur to a T! I love it.

We took Arthur to have his plaster casts put on last Monday. The physio examined his feet and watched him walk holding my hand, and on his own, with and without shoes on. I was worried that he wouldn't perform for her, but he did, he was eager to walk all over the place :) She said he walks sort of almost on the outer edge of his left foot, but not on his right. She graded both his feet individually (which she has done at each appt since he was 3 months old) and found he had a score of zero on every count for his right foot!!!! I totally didn't expect that! So his right foot is normal. I still think it looks a little curly but it is graded completely normal - phew! She said she did not need to treat the right foot therefore. He used to have several scores of 2 and a couple of 1.5s for both feet, so it's great to see how his feet have improved over time and with treatment. A score of 4 is club foot. He was diagnosed with "skew feet" originally.

But his left foot had a couple of scores of 0.5 and she said it definitely needed a full-length plaster cast on that leg :( So she put one on. It took ages but Arthur was as good as gold! I was so surprised because he has always created such a scene before. He seems to hate it so much, but this time he was fine. I think it helped that he is quite a bit older this time, but also we had Neil with us for the first time, and we took along some of his favourite musical toys. He is SO much more into musical toys now than he was the last time, and they keep him occupied really well. I'm so glad we had Neil with us because I came over pregnant and had to keep sitting down and catching my breath, urgh. The physio said to Arthur, "Oh, Mummy's tired!" and I said, "Mummy's just pregnant" and she was all excited for us :)

Anyway so the actual putting on of the plaster was a success! I'm so glad, because usually it's such a traumatic thing for poor Arthur. He was perfectly content with his daddy and his Fimbles wind-up musical telly thingy. It took about 15 minutes to apply all the plaster and they had to hold his leg really firmly in uncomfy positions while they did it, so he did soooo well. I'm so proud of him!

He wasn't allowed to walk or stand on the plaster for the rest of that day, but she said he could do whatever he wanted the next day. He crawled on it fine when we got home. He just sort of dragged the plastered leg slightly behind him! I was so pleased that he only got one plaster done, because it makes SUCH a difference to his mobility, to be able to still use one leg as normal. He was trying and trying to stand and walk on it (which I was amazed at!) but was very frustrated when we couldn't let him do that, poor thing! We were so careful.

His sleep was just normal, not affected by the plaster at all, which was a relief. However, the next morning when Neil got him up, he found that the plaster had broken in a full circle around his ankle, so his foot was loose and flopping and the plaster was definitely not supporting his foot in its stretched position any more :( So we had to page the physio. I ended up asking her if it would do any harm to delay replacing the plaster till January, because I was just so tired out and weak and giddy for that one day with the plaster - it was so much harder than I thought to lug Arthur around in it, and particularly to be poised at every moment to catch him if he overbalanced, or stop him walking on the plaster, etc. I have just hit a SUPER exhausted patch in my pregnancy and I am hoping I'll feel less wiped out in January. The physio said in Arthur's case it would be no harm at all, and she was so understanding about the pregnancy tiredness. So Neil and I put Arthur in the bath that morning after I spoke to her, and soaked that plaster off! Yay! We know he still has to get another set or two eventually, but all the same we were just SO thrilled to be getting rid of it! Both of us said that we felt on a real high for the rest of the day! I really hate when Arthur has to wear those enormous casts on his little legs.

Sooo he is out of plaster for now. I have to wait to hear from the physio about when to go back in January. I personally think that his feet have started to show a little improvement since about a week before he had the plaster put on, from when he started to walk just everywhere, rather than a few steps here and there a couple of times a day. I am hoping and praying that somehow if he does a lot of walking and gets plenty of walking done in his boxy shoes, that his feet will have improved further by January and he won't need such a lot of treatment for them (or the left one, anyway). The physio said his foot may improve or worsen. He IS walking stiffly with his left foot, sort of on the outside of it a little, with the foot stiff and slightly turned in, whereas he walks fine on the other foot. It's only a subtle observation, but it's there.

Anyway, so I am glad he is out of plasters for Christmas and New Year. We are going all over the place to visit family over the holiday period. I am partly looking forward to that and partly dreading it! I REALLY want to see all the family but I don't look forward to the travelling and the unfamiliarity of other people's houses and having no personal space to escape to if I need it, and living out of a suitcase with a little one. But we're not staying anywhere long, and Neil has arranged his holiday time at work so that we can go to both his parents (who haven't seen Arthur since he was 11 weeks old, so they definitely get first dibs!!!) AND my parents in France!!!! We had no expectation of being able to go to France this winter because of how we have no money and no time and Neil's family come first on the visiting stakes at the moment. So I am really excited and thrilled that we're going! My parents are wonder-people and are paying for all our travel over there. I love them to bits. But I know they want to see us as much as we want to see them.

We are driving (5-6 hours, yeurgh!) to Neil's parents in North Yorkshire (brrr!) on Dec 22nd and coming back on Boxing Day, and then we'll have 3 days to ourselves at home (to recover!) and then fly to France on the 30th, and come back home on Jan 5th. We both like to do it that way round, even though I would LOVE to spend actual Christmas with my parents one year soon (it's been 3 years now), because we find staying with Neil's parents a bit stressy, and my parents ULTRA lovely and relaxing. It's nice to finish the visiting and travelling with my parents. It isn't Neil's parents' fault. His dad is completely incapacitated after countless strokes, and really we are all amazed that he didn't die years ago, as the doctors did not expect him to. He has leukaemia (the chronic kind) as well and new things keep cropping up all the time. They keep saying another stroke will kill him, but he just keeps still hanging in there year after year. His quality of life is terribly poor though, and Neil's mum and sister work so hard as carers for him. It's hard. Their house is full of clutter and not much space. It's just not the most relaxing break, but we do want to see them and spend time with them, and have them see Arthur. My parents on the other hand are blessed. They have health, are very active and constantly socialising with the extremely friendly other villagers (who just can NOT get enough of Arthur!), have the most BEAUTIFUL spacious renovated 15th century farmhouse in the middle of acres of rather breathtaking vineyards and old stone farmhouses in the Loire Valley. I have also never been in a house that felt so spacious and roomy and comfortable and inviting. It's just the perfect break, and the bonus is having my lovely parents to spend it with, since it's their place! So it's lovely for us to see them, and to see them last.

I am so excited about seeing my parents!! I always am :) I know Arthur is going to get a LOT of walking done in that house! The floors are stone though, so I hope he won't crack his head on them too much! They have biiiig rugs, and the floor is heated from underneath so it's not cold or too hard everywhere. There are a few parts of the house on a different level to others, so there are places where you have to go up one step or down one step, which will be great for Arthur too. They have a big garden with lots of interesting things in it for a little one, especially birds - Arthur LOVES birds! And so far three ladies in the village have insisted on visits from us with Arthur - WITH Arthur, you understand! Hehe! One of them is my parents' good friend, the village baker (well, his wife who sells the bread). Last time we were there she just swept Arthur up and covered his cheeks with kisses and cooed over him incessantly in French! Of course he didn't mind ;) She has been known to continue serving customers behind the counter with someone else's baby on her hip while she wraps baguettes and puts money in the till! Arthur is a little more aware of whether he is with a stranger (ie - not Mummy) these days so I am not sure how well he'd take to that. I might be surprised though, he might do fine. My mum says he'll have no choice with this lady!

I have actually written Christmas cards this year!!!!! Wow. Last year I didn't send any or buy any even, but then I had a newborn and we got flu. Ohhhh that was the most awful Christmas on record, seriously. Most of you were already reading me then, but for those that weren't, I got flu the week before Christmas. Arthur was 6 weeks old. And not, "Oh, I've got flu" (I HATE when people call something comparatively puny, "flu") - real influenza. I have had it 3 times in my life now. The first time was at school. The second time was also right before Christmas, in 1999, and unfortunately my immune system was pretty run down at the time, so the result of that bout of influenza was being completely housebound for 2 years with M.E. So I consequently HATE flu. Hate. It's stupid but I feel really angry towards the disease, like it ruined my life or something. Hate it. I feel like if I never caught it that year, I wouldn't have lost 2 years to horrible illness. But maybe I would have, just in a different milder form? Anyway, that doesn't even matter anymore. But I hate flu with a passion.

Soooo the nasty bugger struck again right after I had a baby, and I was ill for 3 weeks. I couldn't even sit up to breastfeed Arthur, and Neil had to do so much for us. He came down with it 3 days after me, but my fever got so high that he had to tend to me in the night and stuff even so. Ugh. So naturally we couldn't have any sort of a Christmas or see any family, or indeed ANYONE last year. We were so sick over Christmas itself. We called the emergency doctor 4 times. Ugggggh. Arthur got a slight fever and I nearly carped my pants, convinced that my 6 week old would never withstand influenza and we'd lose him. But amazingly he did fine. He got snotty eventually but his fever never got dangerous and he didn't act too unwell. I was so thankful to be able to breastfeed him throughout. Neil had to prop me up while I did it. Ohhhhhhh it was so horrible. It took a month to get my strength back afterwards.

Sooooooo this Christmas I feel sorely tempted to keep the three of us indoors and seal the windows with bubble wrap until the season is over, haha! I am just praying we none of us catch anything, big or small, over this whole holiday, or the whole winter for that matter. I just want to be able to have Christmas this year. It feels like we haven't done Christmas in a long time - since before I was pregnant with Arthur actually! Weird.

So I'm really looking forward to Christmas this year (which would have been the SHORT version, tsk!)!

The next thing coming up for Arthur is on Monday (in two days) he has his automated appt for his first MMR jab. I am absolutely torn over whether to take him or cancel. I think every parent seems to be like this since the hype about the MMR jab. I don't know what to do, but I have been researching online like crazy the last couple of days, and so far I am not too convinced about the individual vaccines, since research doesn't seem to support there being any difference to the child's body in having them seperately or all together. Plus they cost money that way, and we haven't got ANY. At all. In fact, we have minus money. We are not buying Christmas presents this year, because we just can't, but I am making a video of Arthur's first year for Neil's family and mine. They know we are in the poo and don't expect any presents, which is a relief. Arthur will not know any different, so we feel fine about not buying him anything this Christmas. He just got a lot of presents for his first birthday, and he will get presents from family for Christmas.

Anyway so we can't afford single jabs in any case, but I feel better finding that there doesn't seem to be a benefit (though it makes sense in my head that there would be, sort of). Okay so then I considered delaying the MMR till he's older, as some people say that they wait till their little one's immune system is stronger. But is it sufficiently stronger to make a difference, a year or two down the line? I'm not sure. And I researched autism (the bit I'm most worried about) which showed that symptoms usually appear (as a given) around the time that MMR jabs are often given. So maybe it SEEMS like there's a link but there isn't? All the research I looked at did not support any link, except one with a sample size of TWELVE which isn't so great. I don't know. Then I think that if there's even a TINY risk then I don't want to put Arthur through it.

So far he doesn't display ANY early symptoms of autism, but the type that is hyped up with the MMR is the regressional type, where everything seems to be going normally till something causes a regression of normal development and autism is diagnosed. I guess there is just no way to know what will happen. I also don't want any risk (even tiny) of Arthur contracting mumps or measles. At his age, or even in a year or two, he could have such serious complications that he could even die, or have some sort of damage for the rest of his life. I have had both mumps and measles myself and they SUCK. I was seven when I had measles. They just started the vaccine here around that time, and they told my mum that my brother should be vaccinated (he was four) but at the age of 7, I should deal with it okay if I caught it. I was soooooooooooooo sick for so long. I don't even remember most of it. I know my temperature went off the thermometer and well into brain damage levels which scared my parents silly, and the doctor came daily because he didn't feel I was stable enough to move to hospital. I do NOT want Arthur catching measles. I know it's rare now that the MMR has been around a while, but it still happens (mainly due to those that don't vaccinate their kids, it has to be said). I got mumps when I was 12. I managed okay with that - no complications, but it was horribly painful for 3 weeks and I had a high fever all that time. My mum and brother had mumps when I was 7 (that was not such a good year for us, was it?!) - don't know why I didn't catch it then actually - but Bennie had it mildly and Mummy had it terribly. She developed encephalitis as a secondary complication and lost the hearing in her right ear, which she will never regain.

So I don't want Arthur at risk to those sucky illnesses. At all. So that leads me wanting to just take him and be done with it. But I feel so nervous. Urgh. I still haven't 100% decided yet. I DO want him vaccinated, but the issue is my fears over it. I should pray. He was vaccinated with the Hibb booster at 2, 3, and 5 months old and those are like SIX different things at once. He did fine. So I don't know..... If I knew everything would be 100% fine then I wouldn't even hesitate. But he's my precious love....

Ooh, (changing the subject slightly!) I need to write about night weaning again!!!! I did follow on from stage 1 of the plan and do what I said I wanted to do - just nurse him for a very short time before taking him off the breast in the night. I chose a window of midnight to 5am. I wanted to do it until 6am (and Dr. Jay Gordon says to choose a 7-hour window, but oh well) but he is difficult to get back to sleep after 5am so I would rather be allowing him to nurse almost back to sleep after that time if it means us getting more sleep! Otherwise he is awake from 5 or something similar (which is CRAZY) and we just end up trying to settle him until an hour later when we finally get him up. We aren't willing to allow him to get used to 5am wake-ups! We definitely couldn't deal with that.

Anyway so it went fine. Arthur cried for a few minutes when I took him off the breast but I was right there snuggling him up against me and stroking his back, and then he would just stop and go to sleep. I stop patting or stroking him if I sense he is ready to fall asleep. I really want him to learn how to do it all by himself. So two nights ago came the time to stop offering him the breast at ALL during that window at night. I was really dreading it because I felt sad not to be letting him nurse at any time when he wanted to. Also I know he gets more of my milk at night and I didn't want to put a stop to that. But if I didn't, then the sleep issues would not change, and we need them to. So I did it. The first night he slept all evening and then woke right before midnight which was ideal for him, as I was able to let him nurse for as long as he wanted before taking him off the breast as he got near sleep. Then he woke at 3.15am and I cuddled up to him and patted his back and he cried like he was soooooo sad, which made me feel all heartbroken myself, but then it only lasted a few minutes and he stopped and went back to sleep! I was so happy about that because I had prepared myself for maybe a LONG crying spell as I tried to comfort him. It felt amazingly easy and I had no idea it would. I felt so relieved. He next woke around 6am and had a nice long snuggly breastfeed! Last night was weird. He slept all evening and didn't wake before midnight which he NEVER does. He also has never gone from bedtime to morning without nursing, not even close. So I really wanted to nurse him at my bedtime before midnight so it wouldn't be such a long spell for him without nursing, but I fell asleep by mistake and when he woke me up it was 1.30am!!! Of course this was well inside the window so I patted him and he cried for a couple of minutes, but sleepily, and then went back to sleep. He woke again at 5ish so I nursed him, and then he slept till 6 or so. So I would say it's going well!!!

I still cannot IMAGINE Arthur will ever really stop waking up at night, but the programme assures me that he will once he realises that he won't get any milk when he wakes. That very idea makes me feel sad, but I try to keep focused on the goal which is Arthur sleeping through the night, and me getting SLEEP again! I haven't slept through the night - not even one! - since about halfway through my pregnancy with Arthur. That is 18 months ago! Long enough that I can't remember what it feels like not to wake in the night and to sleep soundly for more than 3 or 4 hours. Although Arthur DID sleep for 7 hours straight once, at around 8 weeks old. And a few nights of 5 hours straight. But I forget how it feels to go to bed at bedtime and wake in the morning, even if it's early morning for when Arthur gets up. Annoyingly, even if he DOES start sleeping through now, pregnancy peeing gets me up at least twice in the night still, so I doubt I'll get the solid night's sleep! But it will make things SO much better. I really hope it's true that it will happen. But I just don't really believe it right now. But I'm glad it seems to be working so far! I miss my sweet little boy in the night though, already :(

Talking of whom (changing the subject again!), I have a bazillion photos and two little movie clips of him dancing to some music and walking!!! Yay! We finally bought new tapes for our camcorder (on the credit card, ugh) so that we didn't miss Arthur's new walking. I would hate to have a gap in our video footage of his first toddly walking! Also we wanted to get some stuff filmed before he went into plaster casts.

His latest thing is dancing. He LOVES to dance! He was dancing around his birthday but he has had a lot of practise since then, and he now likes to dance standing alone without holding onto anything. It's so funny, because he just bends and straightens his knees, bopping up and down with his hands all floppy in front of him, but it takes sooo much concentration that he always wears a funny little frown while he's doing it! I love watching him dance!

Here is a video clip of Arthur dancing (quite spontaneously) to Kylie Minogue (which happened to be the CD we were playing at Arthur's earlier request!). Also he walks a little in this clip so I finally got that on camera too at the same time, yay! He walked all stiffly with his arms out in front - we called it zombie arms, because he really did hold them out just like that as he walked sometimes! That stage seems to have passed already (boo!) and he is now walking much more smoothly and steadily, and doesn't really hold his arms out much anymore :( Anyway, here is the clip - the images for the links to the clip seem to be coming out as broken links (little boxes with a cross in) at the moment but you can still click on them and get taken to the video clip:

This next clip was taken probably the next day or something. Arthur sometimes switches the TV on by the power button on the front (something we are trying to teach him NOT to do, but in vain so far!), and on this occasion the TV went straight to a music channel which had a music video playing. Arthur gave us a joyful look and then started dancing to it straight away, bless him! It was cute :) Of course we missed that initial moment on the camcorder, but here is the rest of the scene from shortly after :) I know it's just more dancing but I love it so much, so you have to put up with it too, haha! ;)

Now for PHOTOS!! I have so many. I will just put them up and be done with it! Here goes:

Arthur asleep in his carseat when we got home from fellowship group at lunch time a few weeks ago. He was all slumped forward against his harnessy thing. It was so ultra cute that I couldn't resist a photo. He never naps in the car but he had missed his morning nap and was tired out :)

The next one was taken 3 weeks ago (wow, has it been that long?!). Arthur was being a cheeky monkey! He had pulled out the things I usually stuff under the stairs in that gap there and sat amongst them looking very pleased with himself! He can be so mischievous! I LOVE his mischievous expressions! Here is one of them :)

Here is the monkey boy a week or so ago:

I finally got two decent WALKING photos a couple of weeks ago!! Yay! Here they are - see him still at the zombie arms stage?! He is always sooooooo thrilled with himself when he is walking! :) I love that I managed to get one with his little leg up in the air, mid-walk:

He still has a complete fascination with all kitchen appliances!...

And finally, a couple taken yesterday - Arthur in the food cupboard! He LOVES this cupboard, and spends a lot of time in it each day! He likes to push the cans about and rearrange stuff, and stack the tinned sardines (they are flat and square so good for stacking) and winkle out a piece of dried pasta with his finger and try to chew on it without me noticing (and thus putting a stop to his fun!). He likes shaking containers whose contents rattle, and he also likes chewing the labels off things! I am forever rescuing half-chewed things from him! He just loves this cupboard so much. Here he is examining one of his "finds" yesterday:

And the last one - it needs a caption methinks! It's just Arthur knowing he's gorgeous :)

I'll update again as soon as I can. I'm updating my pregnancy diary a little more these days because stuff changes so fast there and I'm all excited and want to keep recording it. Not that I DON'T want to record all of the exciting stuff that is going on for Arthur or me and Neil, but you know. Pregnancy is thought-consuming, and needs an outlet! But I will try to update here when I can - hopefully much more frequently soon!

All things Arthur-ish!! (warning - very long!!)

Thank you so much for the messages after my last entry! I really was surprised to get any - that was a pretty dull entry! ;) Thanks for the sympathy over the money issues, and also for reminding me that God will make everything right :) I know he will too. He's good like that! Michelle, I WISH we could have tea too! Why oh why does an ocean have to separate me from all my lovely online friends (well, except for Jemma, of course!)?! Tsk. Thank you Jemma for reminding me to have faith in my husband. He has never steered me wrong before, you're right. I had to trust him completely over moving to the house we're in at the moment because I was still housebound with M.E. and wasn't well enough to even go and view the house. But it just FELT right to me, and he was so confident. I had such peace over it, and we had looked at a LOT of places and I never had that peace over it as I did with this one. But this time seems different. I had the exact opposite feeling to peace, and Neil himself didn't know what to do, so it wasn't like he had made a decision that he felt good about and I could have gone with that. He was dithering about just as much as I was - we're quite a pair for dithering!! ;) In the end he just picked one option out of "Go" or "Not go", just at random. So I didn't have anything much to put my faith in!

Anyway I am so glad we stayed. But I am constantly distracted by thoughts of this new job that he is going to apply for. In a good way though - I keep thinking about it because I feel sort of excited, like I almost WANT it to happen, even knowing that I'll hate moving and starting again in a new place. Neil is nervous about it because he is worried he can't do the job, but he ALWAYS thinks like this about new jobs that require a little more of him than his previous role. He has always had such low self-confidence :( He is so bright though, and always rises to the challenge. He is almost panicky for the first few weeks in a new role, constantly coming home saying he can't do it and he'll never learn everything, etc, but he always does. I always remind him of this when he next has worries about an upcoming new role. So I know he'll be fine, IF he gets the job.

It IS a step up from what he has been doing, more towards management, but he has the relevant experience. It's a bigger salary than he's ever had, and based in an area where the cost of living (and housing) is markedly cheaper than here, so if he gets the job we would know without a doubt that it was definitely something God meant us to do. And we'd go. No matter what else was happening. I am excited about moving to this particular city. It's one I have always felt comfortable moving to, and I have all these (probably unrealistic!) mushy dreamy fantasies about raising our children there and stuff. So Neil will apply for the job. The closing date is December 12th and I will keep you posted! If he doesn't get it, we will not have lost anything.

Well, Arthur is having his morning nap and I neeeeeeeeded to take this opportunity to update my diary, or at least, get as much crammed in as I can in his half hour and then leave it open to finish it during his afternoon nap! I totally meant to update again the next day after my last entry but the time just isn't there. I am so tired lately. Yesterday evening I had planned to update my diaries ALL evening if that's how long it took! I told Neil that's what I would be doing and everything. Then I put Arthur to bed, and was almost too tired to even go and brush my teeth before falling into bed myself. Not that I feel any less tired for it today, but oh well. So my opportunity disappeared yesterday too. I am soooooo behind on my favourite diaries yet again! That sucks, I love my diary reading! Pah.

Anyway there is so much to say about Arthur! I don't think I've talked about how he's doing and stuff since before he turned one! It seems too strange to me that he's 13 months old next week. Where did that month go?! It seems like time is speeding up more than ever before. This week I got my update from Babycentre for his last week as a 12-month-old, and after this they stop being weekly and become monthly updates :( My baby is growing up!

He must be doing new things since I last wrote about him.... He is walking a lot. He walks more than he crawls, but he still cruises a lot. He toddles about in such cute little tottery steps! I love to watch him. He crosses rooms and walks to his toys and pauses mid-way across the room to think where to go next, etc. The latest thing he has been working on with his walking is changing direction by pivoting on one foot. He is getting really good at that now and changes direction all the time, almost just for the fun of it sometimes! He can also trample though toys that are in his way rather than trip over them and fall down. He is getting much steadier.

BUT, his feet are still curving inwards and he has a high arch at the instep, so on Monday he will go back to the physio at the hospital and have the first set of full leg plasters put on again to set his feet straight :( I am so sad about it, but I know it needs to happen to really fix his feet. I just hate that he already had four sets of plasters when he was 5 and 6 months old and that was supposed to fix them, but it obviously hasn't. Now he is sooooo mobile and full of energy, and I'm dreading how the plaster casts will restrict him and how hard that might be for him. I hope it won't be a complete nightmare. He adjusted so wonderfully before, but then he was only rolling around back then, and not eager to get all over the place with a ton of energy to burn off. The casts will be bent at the knee just like before, but not as much as 90 degrees, so it will be very hard for him to even crawl on them. I think he will find a way of squiggling around the floor though. He's very determined!

Anyway. Last time the physio said one, maybe two plaster sets. I am pretty sure his feet won't be perfectly straight after just one, so I think we'll go back after the first week, have the plasters removed and need to put another set straight back on him. But I really HOPE two will be it. I am absolutely sure he'll be well out of them by Christmas though, and hopefully never to go back in anything to correct his feet again! Pesky gene.

Let's see, what else? Arthur has been asleep 30 minutes now so he will probably wake in like 10 seconds. He's usually like an alarm clock - exactly 30 minutes! When he wakes I'll leave this unfinished and post the (hopefully!) finished entry later.

Ohhhh there's just so much to update on! I am trying to remember what things Arthur was doing last time I updated about him. I'm sure he's doing so many different things now. He doesn't say many real words (though he babbles CONSTANTLY, and his babbling really sounds like proper language now), though Babycentre keeps telling me that my toddler is now using at least two other words besides Mama and Dada. He does say Mama and Dada properly now - for ages it was just dadadadada for Daddy, but he says "Dada" now :) Still adds a few extra syllables to it now and then though! I think he is saying, "Hot" because he points to the oven sometimes and says, "Uht" (usually dropping the 't') and gives me a look that tells me he is communicating a specific word to me. He says, "Wow!" because he learnt it from his musical toy (the one he was dancing to in the birthday video) - after the song finishes, a voice says, "WOW!" and he has started repeating it. He looks at me and says, "Aoooww!" except it doesn't sound a GREAT deal like "wow", more like a soft "ohhh" that starts with an "a" sound! But we know that's him saying "wow". He uses this sound to mimic lots of sounds we make now. Like for example, if I made woof woof woof sounds like a dog, he will make sounds back at me in the same rhythm so I know he is mimicking my dog sounds, but he'll say, "aohh aohh aohh!" and look very pleased with himself, even though it really doesn't sound like a dog barking! Such a sweetie :) He mimics sounds a lot now. If I snort like a piggy, the nearest he can make to that sound is to open his mouth wide and make a roaring sound. I guess an open-mouthed snort SORT OF sounds like a bit of a roar! He doesn't get that a snort is made by INHALING, and if you do the same thing and exhale instead, you get a roar!

He can finally point to his nose and ear! He points to mine first though :) He says, "Eeee" when he points to anyone's ear. That is definitely his attempt at saying ear, as he doesn't use that sound for normal babble much. It's so sweet to ask him where his nose is and see him put his tiny little finger on his cute little button nose!

He points CONSTANTLY at absolutely everything! At first it was just at interesting and obvious things, but now he points at absolutely anything he glances at, even for a second, and demands ("Aaht!") that I take part in his interest! I tell him what everything is, even the non-descript stuff ("Wall! Yes, Arthur, that's the wall!") but sometimes it's really hard to figure out what he's actually pointing at! I just guess on those occasions and point to what I think he's pointing at, and say what it is. If I'm wrong he shakes his head at me, no, and makes his eyes very dark and scornful and condescending! He has some wonderful disapproving expressions now, hehe ;) I get them a LOT every day, as he is really starting to assert his independence over things he wants. If I say no to anything he wants, or even end a breastfeeding session sooner than he would prefer because it's not a great time or it's too sore for me or whatever, he instantly has a melt-down. Melt-downs usually involve collapsing to the floor (where he might already be, but complete floppery is involved to make his point!), crying as falsely hard and noisily as he can, and sometimes headbutting the nearest thing, or banging his face on the floor - I hate that! It always leaves him crying more and with a red lip and nose :( He just seems to want to show ALL his frustration! At this stage though, it's pretty easy to distract him from melt-downs, so they never last long. I can usually distract him almost immediately and he's all smiles again in seconds. He is quick to please at the moment, which is nice while it lasts! :)

He loves me to sing, particularly action songs, but he doesn't really mind if they have actions or not. He just likes the singing, and he joins in with soft little waily sounds that go up and down. To ask me to sing, he says, "Roe roe roe..." and waits, looking me in the eye very directly. This started because I used to sing "Row row row your boat" and he loved it so much that he would make me sing it again by saying, "Roe roe roe" (I write it that way because his sounds are so much more vowelly than mine - he doesn't neatly finish off his words yet (which I wouldn't expect him to) with a consonant or tight lips like at the "w" in "row"). So now I am noticing that if I am singing a completely different song and I finish it and he wants more, he still says "Roe roe roe..." to get me to sing again :) Sometimes though, he is not in the mood for a certain song, and I get the dark disapproving look with shaking head! When I sing "Wind the bobbin up" these days, he immediately starts to try and do the actions even before it's time to do them! I have been singing that one to him the longest though. He likes the clapping parts :) He does clap a LOT.

He still has music on a lot of the time. I kind of like to have times in the day when we have a QUIET house, no music or anything, just our voices and playing sounds, etc. But he is pretty insistent on having music to listen to. I vary what we listen to a lot. At the moment we are listening to Kent Henry's worship CDs (I have 3) and I sing a lot to those which Arthur approves of! We have also been listening to very bouncy Kylie stuff and Arthur sings along to that mimicking some of the sounds she makes, especially the up-and-down sounds. We also have Mozart or my daddy's classical music on a lot. Arthur dances to ALL of it, even the gentle Mozart tracks, hehe! He just stands and bops! It's too cute :)

He has a pop-up orchestra musical toy that he loves. He will press a button and immediately start dancing to the song that plays. It's all classical music on that toy so it's funny to see him dancing to it! He now sings to most of the songs on it, and his "singing" is starting to sound strikingly similar to the notes and sounds of the music on it. Sometimes he even hits the right notes!

Oh my goodness, I have just realised Arthur is still asleep!! I don't even know how long it has been but I am thinking about 45 minutes so far! Yay! That's great. Lately he is back to getting up at 6am which is making him REALLY tired during the morning. I was putting him down for the morning nap very late in the morning as he was never tired enough earlier on, but now he is having to go down at 9am or so. Tsk. I wish he would just take the sleep he needs at night instead of waking tired at 6am! Neil is still a wonder-man and gets up with Arthur to let me get extra sleep until he has to leave for work just after 8am. I stumble downstairs blearily to be greeted by a beaming cuddle from Arthur, a quick on-the-spot breastfeed for him, and then stand swaying on the doorstep with Arthur on my hip, to wave Daddy off to work! But it's soooo worth it to have the extra sleep. I am amazed that I can sleep from 6 till 8 with all the noise Arthur makes playing downstairs! I am just so tired though.

We are working on night weaning once AGAIN. *sigh* I have been feeling so utterly desperate about it lately, and any attempts we make seem to make Arthur clingy and upset and scream for ages at night. In other words, they are not working for us. But the alternative seemed to me to be just continue with the night wakings, and I CAN'T do that any more. Pregnancy is just so tiring. I was already struggling before pregnancy with the tiredness that comes from such disturbed nights, but now it's harder, and I always have in the back of my mind that I absolutely can NOT night-nurse two babies when the new baby is here. So he HAS to wean at night and sleep through well in advance of the new baby arriving, and time feels like it's running out to get that done, especially since things don't seem to be working.

Recently we were trying me breastfeeding him but leaving him awake, and then Neil taking my place next to him and just patting him and comforting him till he went to sleep. That way Arthur was supposed to learn to go to sleep every time without breastfeeding to sleep, and I got to "escape" and feel some relief from the responsibility of getting Arthur to sleep, which sometimes takes ages, especially at bed time. But this method seemed to absolutely traumatise Arthur. He would scream (and I do mean SCREAM, like nails being scraped down a blackboard, till he was retching) for an hour and a half. That is tooooo awful.

It didn't seem to improve either, and we got more and more worn by it. I felt more and more like a horrible mother, and spent more and more of his "trying to get to sleep" time with Neil, crying my own eyes out at a safe distance from the awful scene and getting all in a state about it. Eventually I was talking to my mum about it and she asked what the actual plan was that we were following. It's this one, for co-sleeping parents by Dr. Jay Gordon, that I found online once. I found it months and months ago but it strongly suggests waiting till your child is at least 12 months old so I waited. Waiting was so hard sometimes, but I just want to do what is right by Arthur at all costs, and I felt that the reasoning behind waiting was right. Anyway I thought we were basically following that plan, but had actually started to stray from it a bit by leaving Arthur to be settled by Neil. Really, I need to stay with Arthur and be the one to comfort him till he learns to sleep without the breast. He needs me so much at the moment. He isn't incredibly clingy, but when he needs comfort, absolutely nobody else will do but me, which is normal and actually quite lovely :) But demanding at times like this.

So I have been making an effort to be the one to settle and comfort Arthur at night and we are following the plan properly this time. It's really starting to work! We have done 5 nights so far. The first 4 nights are meant to be breastfeeding whenever the baby wakes, but always stopping while the baby is awake, and then comforting and patting and stuff to soothe the baby off to sleep. It's based on always laying next to your little one, never leaving them alone to go to sleep. I like that. The only other thing I had up my sleeve was the Ferber method (increase crying time by 5 minutes each time after you go in, and always always always leave your child alone to cry and go to sleep) and no matter how many times I thought, "Right, we're just going to have to try this method!" I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Everything in me said that it just did NOT feel right to leave Arthur to cry in order to learn to sleep, no matter how successful it might be, nor how much the book promised he would never remember it or hold a grudge against me for it. Dr. Jay Gordon suggests any method where you leave your child to cry will cause some sort of close-down, however inperceptible or seemingly unimportant, between parent and child, and I believe him. It just makes sense to me. I think if I did it, I would swear there was no change in him, but I don't know.... I just don't believe there wouldn't be, on some teeny tiny level. I want to maintain our close attachment throughout, not remove a little of it to get him sleeping. Especially since it can be done without that removal.

Oh, Arthur is awake - after an hour's nap, yay! - so I will finish this later!

Okay, he's having his afternoon nap but I have used about 15 minutes of it going over what I already wrote, as I had forgotten where I was! So I may not have much time.

Sooo the sleep. Yeah so I always take him off the breast and then at first he would REALLY complain and cry and try and get up and pull my top, etc. But I just stayed sleepy and patient and quiet and consistent, and now he is already just going to sleep at night when I take him off the breast. Once or twice last night he didn't even protest, he just rolled onto his other side, eyes closed, and went to sleep! That is SUCH a change for Arthur. Bedtime is easier too, even if he was energetic before the breastfeed. Nap times in the day are the least affected so far. He is much less tolerant of being taken off the breast to go to sleep in the day, and will sometimes still cry for the entire hour, with me cuddling and patting him, until I call an end to the nap time and get him up with no sleep. I thought that would happen this afternoon but he just fussed for a few minutes and then went off.

The next step is supposed to be choosing a window in the night where I want him to sleep through, like seven hours from 11 till 6am or something. And then I stop breastfeeding him when he wakes in that window :( I am dreading this stage. Partly because I know he'll have a hard time with it, and thus so will I. But also because I actually don't WANT to stop breastfeeding him at ANY time. It's just that I have to now. I need my sleep. He could go on like this for years, which is not wrong at all, but I am not able to keep up with it, and especially not with another baby coming. So I have to, but I hate that I have to. I love nursing him at night, it's so snuggly and lovely. And he gets more milk at night, as my flow is better.

I feel like that's a bit of a sudden change, so what I plan to do is cut down the length of the nursing sessions to like 30 seconds or something, which he'll hate, but deal with, and then it's not so harsh to suddenly not be giving him the breast at all. At the moment he's nursing for a while before I figure he's getting sleepy and take him off. Last night I tried shorter feeds and didn't notice much difference. He was all sleepy so that helped :)

I think I will choose a six hour window. Midnight to 6am or something? Just to see if he will initially sleep through that with this plan. He may then sleep through the evening too, and if not I can always stretch out the window if I am still not managing too well. Anyway, that is the latest on the sleep thing. It feels like sleep has been a LONG haul for us this past year! It has been the hardest thing by far. I love what we chose to do, but if you'd told me it would be like that at the start, I would not have been able to cope with the idea and probably would have changed my choices to try and prevent it. I had no idea he would wake so frequently past even 2 or 3 months old!! I remember thinking, "My gosh, he's 3 months old and still waking like this! I seriously cannot cope with this much longer!!" Haha. And here we still are! The very idea of the same thing happening with the next little one is more than I can bear thinking about, it has been so hard this time round. So I think we will make some changes next time, but I haven't decided what. I thought we wouldn't co-sleep, but actually I ADORE co-sleeping, even though it's so hard with Arthur's waking that we hardly get any enjoyment out of it and often don't even sleep together! But I hate the idea of my baby in a separate box to sleep in. If ONLY we had a bigger bedroom, I would definitely use a bedside cot, and would have with Arthur too, but there's no way we could fit one in with our big bed and our tiny bedroom! Also I don't know quite what the arrangement will be with where ARTHUR sleeps when the new baby comes. I think we will transition him to his own space, but not a cot. Either a toddler bed or a separate floor mattress of his own, but DEFINITELY in our bedroom, not his own. I researched and read that co-sleeping toddlers who have always been in their parents bed or room do not cope well if put in their own room once the new baby arrives and sleeps in with the parents. It would not be a wise move, and anyway I don't actually want him out of our room. I like my little ones close to me at night! He likes it too, so there seems to reason to move him out.

Okay, Arthur's half hour is up and I heard him stir, so unless he's going to do a relatively rare thing and resettle back to sleep (especially rare in the day time), I think he will call me in a minute and I'll have to leave finishing this till the evening. At least I am getting plenty written so far! :)

Ooh, he woke and I went in and nursed him again, and he went back to sleep!! Yay! We'll see how long for.

What else? Arthur seems like such a big boy since he turned one, to us anyway. He has made a few transitions due to his coming of age! We ditched the sleeping bags at night which were leaving him FREEZING cold no matter how we layered his clothing, and with great delight we now put him to bed under a nice snuggly duvet! His warmest sleeping bags are only 2.5 togs (one is 3 togs I think) which is cooler than a SUMMER duvet!!! I can't imagine how he'd keep warm and he was starting to wake more frequently and feel really cold. I sewed him some detachable fleece sleeves to wear with his sleeping bags to keep his arms warm, and that helped but his legs were cold inside the bag, even with warm sleepsuits on, etc. Poor boy! So I researched online and discovered that from 12 months it is safe to use our bedding, duvets and even pillows! Such a grown-up boy! I don't see a need for a pillow yet though, as it's perfectly comfy not using one - I don't use one myself if I am lying on my tummy and Arthur likes that position best. But I was so glad to cover him up in our big duvet covers and have him toasty and warm all night long! For ages, Neil and I have been sneaking peeks at our big boy looking so cute under the duvet in the evening, all fast asleep like a little hump in the covers with a dark little head peeping out at the top! Aww :) So that has made night times easier too. Duvets are soooooo easy.

Also we started him on cow's milk as soon as he turned one - the very day I think! Straight away he started having Weetabix with hot (well, warm) cow's milk for breakfast, and he LOVES it. He hasn't looked back since! He eats a whole weetabix for breakfast with lots of milk, and then some toast and a little marmite. He usually eats a couple of apple rice cakes after that. He is a hungry boy these days! We don't give him milk to drink yet though. He shares mine when I have some with my breakfast, and gets a big smile so I know he likes it. But he has a lot of milk on his cereal and that's enough for now. He still gets breastmilk (amazingly my breasts are still going at 13 weeks pregnant!) and eats yoghurt and cheese and I like him to drink water for the little he actually drinks during the day. His constipation problem went as soon as he started milk on cereal. I don't think it's necessarily the fibre in the cereal (though it IS good and fibre-ish!) as it's the same when he has cornflakes and those aren't high in fibre. I think it's the extra fluid. Or the combination of the two. He has a good amount of fibre in his diet already, and has done all along so that wasn't the issue before. But I'm so glad it's worked out without needing to medicate him. It's even better (or worse for me!) now that he's so interested in lots of new snacky finger foods. He loves raisins all of a sudden and will eat them like they are sweets, and cry like the world is ending when they are finished! They come out whole and um, unchanged (urgh!) at the other end. Bleurgh. I am so glad he waited on the raisin fetish for my morning sickness to ease off some! Yeurgh.

At lunch he still eats a jar of organic babyfood - it's soooooo much easier on me to give him that and it's really good food. I have my menu planner sorted out for making home cooked meals for us all, as we've been doing some budgetting with our food shopping. We discovered we really do buy WAY too much convenience food, and it's so expensive. We rarely actually cook a meal from scratch. I NEVER cook these days. Well that is going to change, and I'm quite excited about it actually! I do like cooking, but got into such a slump for YEARS now over doing it much. It will be way healthier for us if I make real food and we don't eat packaged food any more. No preservatives, no added salt or sugar unless the recipe calls for some, etc. Also it's fun to make a great meal, and satisfying to enjoy it at the end.

I have started already but the full plan is not really in place yet. We are still going to eat fish fingers, as I LOVE them and they are so easy. I LONG for pizza at the moment but they are way too expensive, so I have got some good pizza dough and topping recipes online and am going to try making my own! Yesterday I made the most ENORMOUS chicken casserole with a family bag of frozen chicken thighs. It was amazing value but I didn't really stop to think that there might be TWENTY chicken thighs in there!!!! Boy do we have some good freezer stocks now! ;) Tonight I am making sausage casserole (easy peasy) and tomorrow it's fish pie. It's so much easier than I had imagined, and nice to actually carve out a little time to prepare a nice meal before Neil is even home, so that the house smells wonderful of dinner when he arrives and he comes in saying, "Mmmmm!!! What's for dinner?!" I LOVE that. Makes me feel so housewifey, and that's all I have ever wanted to be, so I love it to bits :) Plus *I* love the smell of a good meal cooking, and knowing I made it and am giving it to my husband and son (Arthur will get mashed or chopped portions) too is wonderful. Like a gift I can give them or something :) Also I love making use of vegetables that I really like eating! I LOVE parsnips, love them, love them, love them. Which will raise a few eyebrows since it's also my code word for sex in my diaries, haha! But I do love them (to EAT)!

Arthur is stirring a little and it has been another 30 minutes so that's great for him! Yay! I feel like this must be a terribly long entry already, but I STILL have so much more to write! Maybe I should post it and then continue in another entry? But if I do that then I'll just never get it done, so I think I'll continue, even if I do so later if Arthur is about to wake. I need to change his nappy when he wakes and then it will be his tea time and I need to start the casserole while he's eating.

Oh yes, food - so for lunch Arthur has jars at the moment still. He is on stage 3 toddler meals! :) He had noooo difficulty going from stage 2 to stage 3, just as I thought. When I make food for him, it's lumpier than stage 3 jars and he takes that fine. He eats a lot for lunch too. Today he had pork and pasta with tomato and herb sauce, and then pancakes with apple and cinnamon sauce (mmmm!). And THEN he had strawberry yoghurt. And then he was eager to have a gingerbread man. Then Grandoug phoned and talked for ages and Arthur was getting so antsy so I gave him a rice cake and he gobbled it down! Hungry boy :)

For tea he always has the kind of thing I had when I was young. But I can't give him the kind of range of stuff that I had yet. It used to be things like egg and soldiers, or sandwiches and fruit and yoghurt, or fish fingers and that tinned pasta in tomato sauce, or cheese on toast or something. The main meal was always lunch so tea was always lighter, but still substantial enough. So I want to do the same for Arthur. He is seriously crazy about baked beans, so much so that he began to refuse ANYTHING other than baked beans, so I have had to take them off the menu for the time being, till he is enjoying a wider variety of new things! It's a shame because baked beans are really nutritious and it's great that he loves them - I want him to eat them! But not at the expense of everything else. So he also has cheese on toast, but sometimes shakes his head and won't have any. He likes grated cheese sandwiches which I cut into inch-sized squares and he feeds himself. I like tea to be a meal that he basically feeds himself, since I spoon feed him lunch still. I offer him the loaded spoon to hold a lot and he sometimes takes it and puts it neatly into his mouth, so he is fine to do it, but usually he shakes his head at me and opens his mouth for me to feed him! So that is fine with me for now. He is very good at feeding himself finger foods.

I like to offer him the gingerbread men in a tupperware box and watch him peer over the edge with big eyes and a little smile, and stare at them all for a moment before reaching in and choosing one. He takes it out almost in a state of awe, as though it's a treasure, and then gets on with eating it :) I love all the little things that delight me about raising a little one!

He has this thing where he crams as much food in his mouth as possible, it's awful! Then he can't even close his mouth for how full it is, and he used to gag and spit it all out, but now he doesn't do that so much. He just works on it for ages and eventually chews it up and swallows it. At first I used to want to stop him doing it, but I read that it's a very normal stage at around a year old, and I'm right there. He deals with the huge mouthful very well now, and he would be sure to learn if he didn't, plus I would be there in an instant to help him. So I am leaving him to it. If he is going crazy stuffing his mouth with every square of sandwich on the highchair tray then I limit him to 2 or 3 on the tray at a time and just put more on as he eats them. But I can't do much about him stuffing the whole gingerbread in his mouth, and I don't want to be saying, "No, don't eat like that!" all the time. Especially after reading how common and normal it is for him to be doing it around now. I don't really like to watch him do it though!

Arthur is STILL asleep!! That's 45 minutes now, on top of his 30 to start with! Wow. It's nearly tea time as well! I'm so glad. He looked so tired this morning.

So he also has pasta with tomato and vegetable sauce for tea. I bought a jar of the sauce (it's Peter Rabbit brand, organic baby food) to see if he'd take it, and when he did, I planned to make my own version when it runs out. He's having that tonight actually :) He also has fish fingers and mashed potato and things like that. At first I went crazy mashing it all up together, but he MUCH prefers it cut into pieces and to feed them to himself like with sandwiches. He eats a whole banana after his tea usually, and any yoghurt that was left from lunchtime.

We just started him on citrus, as it was something the books said to wait on until he was 12 months old due to high allergy risk. He wouldn't take the satsumas I bought for him at first, and as a result I discovered a hidden craving for them in myself! But he was less resistant the next day and ate half of my satsuma with no ill effects :) Yay! That's another thing off the list! Now we just have strawberries, eggs and nuts on the list to go! The strawberries and eggs are safe to start now, according to the charts and books, and stuff, but the nuts not for another year or so. These guidelines are for children with potential allergies though, and I have stuck to those throughout because there is the odd food allery in my family, and Neil and I both have hayfever, and he has asthma. That is well enough risk for Arthur to potentially develop food allergies so we thought it best to play it safe. I consulted charts of timings on introducing different foods to a baby's diet online, and started from there. So far he has had no problem, so I'm thrilled! I am nervous about eggs though, because I felt sure he was reacting to me eating eggs in the early months of breastfeeding. So I am in no hurry to start him on those, but I do hope he'll be fine with them, as I plan to give him plenty of egg in his diet! He did have birthday cake with lots of egg in it and had no trouble with that, so he's obviously not going to have a bad allergy to eggs, if any at all, which is good.

Arthur really enjoys stacking cups and bricks at the moment, a new thing since I last updated about him. He can stack 3 things on top of each other, which is pretty good for his age I think. I read that is something they look for at 18 months (I think?). He loves stashing things in weird places, and the BEST place to put anything is the washing machine! He loves to take a cloth wipe from the pile or a clean nappy from the radiator, or the tea towel that was hanging on the back of the kitchen chair, and toddle round with it to the washing machine, screw it up in a ball, and throw it in there! He sometimes takes toys and puts them in there too, and he has tried taking tins of food out of the cupboard too! He likes to stack the tins, but they are heavy. The tins of sardines (Neil's thing, yeurgh!) are flat and light, and good for stacking, so he loves those.

He is such a tidy boy still! He helps me with the laundry, and "cleans" with a cloth wipe - his highchair legs, the kitchen chair, the walls, anything! He usually puts the used wipe in the washing machine afterwards too, bless him! The other day I opened a letter that arrived in the post, and absentmindedly handed him the envelope as he was clinging to my knees and reaching for it. When I looked up he was struggling to reach behind the armchair where we keep the wastepaper bin!!! I had no idea he knew it was there or what it was for, but he put that envelope right in it! He is amazing with his tidiness, since Neil and I never seem to model anything for him to pick it up from!

Okay I'm sure there is more and I'll get downstairs with Arthur and go, "Tsk! I KNEW I should have mentioned such-and-such!" but oh well. This entry feels too long if I go on any longer, and Arthur is still sleeping so I need to think about his tea and whether or not to wake him soon. I only have two photos to post, mainly because I haven't been taking many lately - something I am trying to fix from today! But also because I have a few that I haven't had time to resize yet, so I'll do that later hopefully and then post them next entry. Also I can't take any video footage of his new walking because we ran out of tapes after his party and can't afford to get more at the moment. But we will, and then I'll take a clip and post it.

So here are two pictures of Arthur enjoying his favourite sugar-free (amazingly!) snack - gingerbread men and a drink of water!

Urgh, I really do have a ton more to write. I will have to make a few notes so I don't forget for next time, and then try to write again very soon. I need to update my pregnancy diary, but maybe I can get that done later. I think I should wake Arthur. He is totally silent in there and has now slept an hour on top of his half hour, so I wonder if his body has decided it's night time - he only ever sleeps like this in the evening. It IS very dark out already, so maybe that's it?

Anyway, I have soooo missed writing my diary lately! I will try to write more often, even if it's just a short entry. I just hate writing short entries though! They don't make me feel adequately purged! ;) Oh, thank you Emma for checking out the photo thing for me - yikes, I didn't realise you could still get to my pics even with the right click disabled! Marking them is such a faff though, and I don't even know if I have the stuff to do it. So I don't know. But thank you so much for checking it and letting me know! :)

Yay, Arthur wakes at last! I'll be back! :)

Financial stuff (sorry, rather dull!)

Oh my gosh, it has been way too long since I updated!!!! I keep wanting to but there just isn't any time. Or there is but I need to eat or sleep. Or I use it to update my pregnancy diary instead.

But sooooooo much has been happening. Thank you so much for all the messages and notes since my last entry, esp those about the photos and videos of Arthur's party! :) I'm so glad you enjoyed seeing them!

Neil took Arthur to church this morning. I'm supposed to be resting, but I suddenly want to "get things done" - tsk! I want to sew and bake but I'll do that another time. I REALLY need to write some stuff here! I will try to be to-the-point - a rare achievement for me, so we'll see, hehe!

Okay, first thing - we are not moving after all. Neil got offered a job in Ipswich, big pay cut, clean air, more affordable housing, job that wasn't exactly what he wants to do but which might get him there eventually. We prayed and prayed about whether we should go or not. EVERYTHING in me was screaming NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, don't go!!! I can't explain why. I talked to Neil about it, but the only explanation we could come up with is that I basically didn't WANT to go. I wanted to stay and nest and have a baby where I feel familiar. I did NOT want to start fresh in a town I don't know, and where I'm not even sure I want to live, with no family or friends for MILES and MILES. Nooope. I got scared. I felt like I barely coped at times with Arthur when he was in his first few months. The health visitor gave me support visits because she felt I was depressed. Suddenly I feared for my sanity doing it all over again (where EVER we are!) and moving to a new place all at the same time. At least here it is my familiar home and a couple of parts of my family are nearby, and my church who we know so well were around to support us. Without those things I feel like I might not make it through without some real problems. Suddenly moving to Ipswich seem like a CRAZY NUTS thing to do.

So we prayed. But didn't feel God was leading us in one direction or the other at all. We kept on praying. Neil's deadline for accepting or declining came, and he stalled them a week, as we had not had sufficient time to work all the financial stuff out.

Oh, that's another part of it. See, somehow we find ourselves really in a mess, financially. If we had moved to Ipswich we would have cleared debts and fixed it all in one swoop, so that was a big pro for going. We made a pros and cons list but it was too equal. Tsk!!! Nothing was helping us choose!

In the end, the second deadline came for Neil to make a decision, and he said, "Okay, let's just go" And that was the point at which I thought, "Ah. In the light of this reality.... I absolutely know I can't do it." I felt bad saying it because I felt selfish and like I wasn't yielding to Neil as the head of this household (which I feel strongly about him being), but I can not explain it. The urge to stay was absolutely uncontrollable. We talked about it a lot, and Neil said wouldn't I just feel this way about ANY move to ANYWHERE at any point in the future? Because we HAVE to move out of London sometime in the next year or two. We can't afford to stay - the houses are just too expensive, and Neil won't get a job in the field he longs to work in, in London. Also we need to find a place to settle and bring up our children, a place where they can be all ready to start school and live in a home that feels like the kind of family home your children will have cosy memories of, one that you can stay in for most of their childhood because there is enough space, and you can have several children before you have to move again.

I think he's right, I WOULD feel this way to a large degree. I am just a home bird. This is my home, and I am just the type of person who hates - HATES - to relocate and have things change. But I know I have to suck it up and get on with it eventually. But the timing.... I figured with the pregnancy and all, it would be better to stay for now. I don't need the stress. I feel so selfish, ugh.

But anyway. Neil's mum felt that it would be a step of faith to GO because the door was open. Neil kind of felt that way too. But, here's the weird thing (or is it? They have both been Christians sooooo much longer than me and so I feel a bit.... like they know better than me or something) - I felt like it was almost a step of faith NOT to go. Neil said he never heard of seeing a door open, having no major reason to stay, and choosing to stay anyway, as a step of faith. He said that sounded faith-LESS. I struggled with it, because maybe I just wanted to stay sooooooo much that I was willing to pass it off as ANYTHING so that it would get us to stay! I really did want to stay that badly.

Urgh. Anyway, Neil turned the job down. RIGHT AWAY, both of us felt fine about it. Neither of us gave it any more thought at all over the next week or two, so that felt good, because if it had been a mistake, I'm sure numerous things would have brought it to mind. It really didn't feel like a mistake to me. It felt like a blessed relief! I felt physically lighter!

BUT. We are right up a certain creek without a paddle, as far as finances go. We exceeded our overdraft limit. Neil's salary NEVER gets us in the black, we always stay in the red even with a nice big lump of money going in once a month. We have crazy credit card debts - I don't even know how they got so scary. Two weeks ago we couldn't make the repayments on the credit cards because we were over our overdraft limit and getting charged crazy huge amounts of money for it. So now our cards are frozen. Neil got paid 2 days ago - hoorah, because at least that frees up some money, even though we are in the red. Every month our outgoings exceed our income so we reach the overdraft limit quicker. Last week we had no money for food at ALL, until Neil unexpectedly found some euros from the last time we visited my parents, and walked two miles to the nearest Exchange Bureau with Arthur in the pushchair, and came back with £136.54p!!!!! Yay! That gave us lots of groceries and a winter hat for Arthur (whose head seems bigger than his age, so the 12 month hat I had ready for the cold weather does not fit him at all!).

For a week or two we have had big stressy discussions most evenings about finances. That has been one major reason why I have had no time to update. We figured we had no choice but to take out a loan, but the idea filled me with DREAD, since my parents have always taught me that a loan is a good way to financial ruin. You're always in debt and you're losing money the whole time. We decided to ask their advice, since they have been in all SORTS of financial crises over the time they were raising a family. Daddy runs his own (now very successful) company, and starting that up was hard financially. So we asked them. They were SO helpful, I mean, amazingly so. And so understanding. I'm so glad we asked them. They were totally non-judgemental, totally giving of their time and wisdom. Daddy offered to have Neil call him any time he wanted to talk about the stresses of finances and earning to bring up a family, etc. Neil has called him twice already! I love my parents :)

We all discussed our options, and when a loan seemed to be the only way, my parents told us that when they were at their most difficult point starting up the business, they took a loan from my dad's parents, which was offered to them with no interest. And they were so grateful and it made SUCH a difference to them, that they have decided to offer the same to us. We talked long and hard about it and decided to take them up on it. It comes with conditions, so that it's a serious arrangement, not just "Oh phew! Some money has landed in our laps! I'm sure we'll pay it back sometime..." We have to cut up our credit cards. Nooooo problem! I'll be relieved to! The only thing standing on our credit cards is the audioblog.com monthly bill - which is where I upload my videos so you guys can see them, and so that I can send them to my parents via email. Daddy said it's such a tiny amount that I should put it on his credit card and buy him an expensive bottle of wine every year, hahaha! ;)

Also we have to set an amount for monthly repayments to my parents, which we'll all agree on based on what we can afford. We have to sell a car - obviously. We are in no position to be a 2-car family. Neil has the little car he drives to work up for sale. I hope it sells fast, and I hope we get what we're asking for it. We need as much as we can get, because it needs to pay for our credit card debts. It may not cover them though. My parents will lend us the difference to cover our debts and overdraft. We still have to pay finances on our family car, but we need a family car. Neil will buy a bike with the first bonus he gets at work (hopefully soon!) so he can cycle to work and cut costs. We cut out some payments on our monthly statements. It broke my heart to cancel my sponsored child payments, but we just have to for now :( I have been sponsoring this child since my teens :( They were so nice about it when I called them, and thanked me for my long term support, and I told them I'll be back when we're more stable financially.

Soooo. That's it really. I can't believe this has taken me the WHOLE time that Neil and Arthur have been at church!! They are back - I can hear them pulling onto the driveway, so I have to go. Sorry this entry is so dry and financial! It was meant to have other stuff to lighten it up! I also meant to say that suddenly another job has come up that Neil could go for, with a HUGE pay RISE, and in the same town in Cambridgeshire that we originally had prepared ourselves to be moving to - one which I feel much better about moving to as well. Also it's right where Neil wants to be in terms of the type of work. So maybe THIS is of God? We have to pray. I don't want to pull a repeat of what I did with the Ipswich job if Neil goes for it and gets offered the job. I wish I had more wisdom....

I will try to write more soon.

Arthur's birthday party - photos and movie clips....

Oh my gosh, I am just so so so sooooooo behind!!! I have so much that I need to write about here, and I can NOT believe I have left it ELEVEN days since I last wrote! Yeurgh. I didn't even write about Arthur's birthday party, which feels like ages ago now :(

Thank you all so much for the birthday wishes for Arthur, and the lovely comments on the photos! Also I meant to say before, thank you all for the helpful advice or even just sympathy (!) over his constipation issues. I need to write about EVERYTHING at the moment. But no time. I will make this entry about his party, and then hopefully update again soon about other things. Maybe it will take me several entries to get it all off my chest?!

Okay, Arthur's party went great! I had not expected a BAD party at all, but somehow it was way better than I even imagined it would be! :) My grandparents and my parents were there, and my brother and his Sarah, and Neil's sister and our little niece, Ella. Neil's brother couldn't come because of work, and his parents obviously can't due to ill health and living miiiiiles away. But it was lovely!

We were so behind on getting everything ready, and my parents offered to come round in the morning and help (the party was 3.30pm). It took us till almost party time to get everything done! I'm sooooooooo grateful for my lovely parents' help. My daddy put balloons up all over the ceiling and a bunch on the front door with shiny ribbons :) They all had "Happy 1st Birthday" printed on them :) I love having balloons on the front door at a little one's birthday party. It tells the whole world that it's someone special's birthday! Anyway, we put 20 balloons up. Neil blew them all up the night before (well, I blew 3 but got exhausted!). Then we put up the multi-coloured fairy lights that Arthur loved SO much as a tiny baby! I was excited to see those up again. It made me feel nostalgic! They first went up in preparation for my homebirth. Ahhh, such special memories! :)

I decided we didn't have NEARLY enough fairy lights, hehe! So Neil bought TWO HUNDRED more coloured fairy lights when he went out to get some food and drink for the party! Wow! We had them all around the ceiling and the mirror. I LOVE fairy lights! They make me feel cosy and like a little girl again. Arthur loves them too. We still have all the decorations up and Arthur points to them constantly. He likes it when Neil gets home from work and lifts him high up so that Arthur can bop the balloons hanging from the ceiling! If the fairy lights aren't switched on, he points and makes sounds with direct looks at me, asking me to switch them on!

Anyway so it all looked pwetty and festive! I baked Arthur's birthday cake and decorated it really simply. It was a plain vanilla sponge cake with raspberry jam for the filling, mmmm! I made plain white water icing for the top and just made a big number "1" on the icing with hundreds and thousands. And put a single candle on top, of course! We completely failed to take any photos of all the important things, tsk, but I took some rather grey and grainy still images from the camcorder, so here are a few - first just the cake (weird colours though - the hundreds and thousands are really bright primary colours), then Arthur being unable to resist touching the hundreds and thousands just after we sang happy birthday and blew out his candle, and then Arthur eating some cake with Daddy:

Also, for your viewing pleasure (!!), a rather dark video of the birthday boy receiving his cake to the tune of "Happy Birthday to you!" :) I wish you could see his face more clearly. He was so excited. I blew his candle out and then he did this cute shy smiley thing at everyone. It's harder to see on the video than I thought, sadly. But here it is!

Arthur opened his presents from nearly everyone, except there were so many that I think he would have been overwhelmed with all of them at once - he was so eager and excited about each one! He tore the paper off the presents himself (with my help) and immediately started playing with each new thing. It was hard to get him interested in the next present to open, so we decided to leave 3 of them till the next day - the ones from my parents and grandparents, who didn't mind a bit. He got a Mega Blocks Monsters building set and a GREAT book with jigsaw pieces in it from SIL, and simple jigsaws and a Meg and Mog hardback book from my brother and Sarah (I LOVE Meg and Mog!!!). He was so keen on the jigsaws, but he likes to take the pieces out (they all have a peg on each piece to make it easy to lift them out) and then pile them up or stash them somewhere! He loves stacking and stashing at the moment. He can stack 3 cups on top of each other, and stack the whole set inside each other one by one. We are constantly losing things at the moment because Arthur has 4 or 5 hidey holes around the living room where he likes to stash things! He likes to find a hole to drop things down into. He goes around choosing things to put in it, and makes several trips, hehe! It's so funny! I usually find several clean nappies, half the jigsaw pieces, plastic fruit, toy cars, and unopened mail down there. He has also started taking a chosen item all the way into the kitchen and depositing it carefully in the washing machine or tumble dryer! Funny boy :)

Anyway, so he loves his presents! He tries to put the jigsaw pieces back on the board they came from, but just plops them down on the board so far. He is also trying to put the shapes through the holes on his shape sorter, though without any success so far. He loves that thing.

Anyway, PARTY! I have to hurry up - Neil has gone to bed, and so should I. He has to go to work early in the morning so I will need to be up early too to watch Arthur when I would normally get extra sleep while Neil watches him. I am NOT a morning person, and I am also a pregnant person who is still getting up several times a night to nurse the little one. So I neeeeed my sleep! I'll get on with it!

The party was so relaxed. We laid out some snacky food that Arthur could eat - pretty healthy food for a party! We had fresh fruit salad, cucumber and carrot sticks, and apple rice cakes!! We did have bowls of crisps for the adults, but they were high out of reach of our little monkey! Arthur's tea consisted of the party food. He ate EIGHT rice cakes!!! He stood by the food table (low table just perfect for his height) for 40 minutes, grazing at stuff! He would pick up a rice cake, take a bite, munch it for a while, then put the rest of the rice cake carefully down in amongst the cucumbers. Then he would pick up another rice cake, take a bite, and - you guessed it! - put the rest down in the cucumbers! He did this with 8 rice cakes, and then started working his way through the discarded ones in the cucumbers! He loves apple rice cakes. He did eat some fruit salad and quite a bit of cucumber too. We forgot to peel the cucumbers but he didn't bat and eyelid. He just chewed and chewed on the tough skins like chewing gum, merrily getting on with socialising (!), and then spitting them out finally after like 10 minutes, when he had had enough of chewing them. He spits things out neatly, it's weird. He is careful as he does it and then won't budge till he has our attention to show us where the piece is, so we can dispose of it. Only then will he move on. He is such a tidy little boy! So unlike his parents, haha! My mum says he must know what he's been born into, and knows the task he faces!!! ;)

He loved the birthday cake! We didn't give him any icing or jam, but the cake was sweeeet and he LOVED it! :) He used the flats of his palms to shovel it into his mouth and eat as much as he could in one go! He never eats like that really, so I know he must have really enjoyed it :) I like that it was a nice birthday treat for him.

Everyone loved Ella - she is such a sweet little girl! She was almost 5 months old at the time of the party, and quite smiley at everyone! She is mostly on formula now, and Neil fed her a bottle which was nice. He has never fed Arthur anything other than solids, as Arthur has never once had a bottle. Oh but he did help with syringe feeding him when he wouldn't take the breast at first. Ugh. That was a hard time.

Anyway Neil is very besotted with his niece! There was a cute moment near the end of the party where Neil took both Arthur and Ella on his lap. The babies just looked at each other and were very "respectful" towards each other! Of course everybody leapt up with cameras flashing ;) I got a few photos, and took a little video clip too, so here they are. Neil said he could get used to having two, and his sister said he would have to, haha! Actually I think that is on the clip. Arthur was so curious and lovely with Ella. He kept wanting to reach out and touch her, and see her face if she wasn't looking at him. He was sooooo gentle with her. Everybody said what a wonderful big brother he is going to make :) Anyway, here they are:

Arthur was not remotely tired of company by the time everyone left a couple of hours later. He was so perfect all afternoon, smiley and waving and clapping and cheerful. I breastfed him when he asked for milk, but I did it in the kitchen because there was no WAY he would ever manage to relax and nurse for any length of time in the living room with all the guests! He was so sociable. He kept cruising round everyone's knees, stopping at each person to smile and be charming, as though he was doing a receiving line, hehe! He seemed to have a great time.

The next day my parents were going back to France, but Mummy came round in the morning to see us and play with Arthur some more, before she went home. We opened Arthur's presents from them - this fab garage and cars! He LOVES it. It makes lots of different noises and has a lift that goes up and down, and he loves to shove stuff into the lift shaft (like plastic broccoli!). He has learnt to push the buttons for the sounds, and he makes such cute smiley faces when he hears them :)

I was so sad to see my parents go home again :( I always get that way though, no matter how long they stay. I just love them and miss them so much. I took a lovely photo of my gorgeous boy with my lovely daddy. They got on so well, and I love the fact that it has been so obvious on this visit that Arthur has inherited my daddy's hair. Did I mention that recently? Arthur has curly hair! I am kind of excited about it! Not the cute curl-ups that lots of babies have at the sides (though he has those too, sometimes), but the proper curly hair on top that won't lie flat and rolls back on itself like has been wearing curlers! It's the exact same type of curling as my daddy's hair, and his mother's hair too. Every other grandparent has straight hair, so I LOVE that this is a special and unique thing that Arthur has inherited from Daddy. I made a lame-o job of using the gene - my hair curled as a toddler but then was pretty straight, and from my teens it has had a natural wave to it. It's sooooooooo long at the moment - I have no idea HOW, as I had so much cut off it when Arthur was born! But it's a foot long at least. I need it cutting again. It's less wavy the longer it gets. Anyway, I am so pleased that Arthur is actually DOING curls with his gene, hehe! I am curious to see how curly he stays as the years pass. Daddy and granny had ringlets! Daddy had long hair in the 70s and it was all ringletty :) So, real curls! I hope Arthur has real curls too. I think it's kind of special. Here are the sweet "woolly" pair:

And last but not least, a photo of Arthur taken during his "wind down for bed after the party" (heh, yeah right!) time. He was still so wired, and didn't go to sleep for ages after he went to bed that night. I think he was up till 9!!!! Sooooooo late for Arthur! Anyway, he did a lot of walking at the party, just a few steps between people or to me mostly. There wasn't much room with all the people in our little living room! After the party he was walking towards me so I took a photo - the first one I have of him walking!

He wore jeans and a little shirt and waistcoat from Next at his party :) It had embroidered animals on it. He got lots of compliments :)

Oh I almost forgot, I have two more video clips to post - a teeny tiny one of Arthur on the morning of his party just after he got up, crawling cheerfully through a sea of balloons, hehe:

And the one I mentioned before, taken on his actual birthday, of Arthur with his Ball Blast toy that Neil and I got him, dancing to the music. That's my mummy who he is looking at, encouraging him to keep dancing. She was bopping about too, but stopped every time she thought the camera might be on her, hehe!

Okay, that has to be all for now. It's getting so late and I just nursed Arthur so it's even later than I planned to finish this. I will TRY to write more soon, maybe tomorrow, to catch up on everything that is happening here. Thank you so much Meg and Jeannie for missing me and asking if everything was okay! *hugs* I feel loved :)
