My Husband Rocks! - Sleep!

I almost forgot it's Friday, and therefore time for me to write about my sweet hubby! :)

Neil is very giving as a husband. One way that he blesses me is by getting up with the boys every single day - they wake between 6am and 6.30am. I am really really not a morning person, and for ohhh... five years (ish) I have been waking at night multiple times with a baby or toddler to nurse them. So for years now, Neil has been getting up with the boys (however many we have!) and letting me sleep until he has to get ready and go to work at 7.15. It's not a lot longer, but even a little bit more sleep makes a big difference to me! He can't sleep till 7.15 if we switch because he'll be late for work that way, so it works for both of us, I guess.

At the weekends for a long time now, Neil lets me lie in later in the morning with the baby. Benjamin doesn't wake up as early as everyone else, usually. On the occasions that he does, Neil even takes Benjamin downstairs and lets me go back to bed as well!! He's a wonder man. I'm so exhausted a lot of the time - just healthy exhausted, and I am not about to complain about it after having had M.E! - and the extra sleep at the weekends is just luxuriously wonderful.

When does Neil get extra sleep? Sometimes he goes to bed early (I'm not so good at that! I'm a night owl, whereas he's more of a morning person), but otherwise he really doesn't get any. He doesn't do any of the night wakings with the baby since "the baby" was Arthur, though. Once we had a toddler AND a baby, we decided to divide and conquer as far as nights went. I would always deal with any baby-related wakings (since I have the milk!) and he would deal with all older-boy(s)-related wakings. He still gets disturbed by them sometimes, but they mostly sleep through, and it's usually only Nathan who wakes now and then. It works for us well, though we don't see each other much at night!

Neil is just so incredibly generous to me in this area. I feel so blessed to have a husband like him! :)

Benjamin's nap today...

Benjamin naps in his Amby Hammock, which I now love completely (I used to be dubious about it when it didn't do much for my 3-week-old baby!). It's easy to rock him back to sleep when he stirs (it works! For the most part anyway) and it looks so cosy and comfy. It's great for helping me to lengthen his day naps (he's a half-hour boy which Arthur was, and I'm DETERMINED to help him do good solid blocks of sleep! So far today he's having 2-3 HOUR blocks, woohoo! But I'm rocking the Amby a couple of times at least over those 2-3 hours).

Today I peeped in at him napping in there and he was fast asleep sucking his thumb! I think all the boys (except maybe Arthur, I can't remember now) sucked their thumbs briefly in the first few months. I remember I always thought I had a thumb-sucker but then it only ended up being a couple of occasions and they never did it again. So we'll see! :) Anyway, with that in mind, I ran for the camera and took way too many photos, haha! The light wasn't good so they're grainy, but the cuteness still stands! ;) An hour or so later I peeped in again and he was still sucking his thumb, well, mostly just holding it loosely in his mouth. While I was in the room he stirred and eventually woke up, and I just kept on snapping to presevere the memory of my sweet little baby boy waking up from a nap at 3 months old. So, here are the photos I took, so that you can see them too. :)

Snoozing when I first found him sucking his thumb:

Back again an hour later, still looking precious! :)

Awake suddenly, and rather confused-looking! ;)

Little thumb out, to look around a bit and figure out what planet he's on...

Big stretch! (this isn't a smile yet, it's part of his "stretch" expression!)

"Okay, I hear Mummy's voice, but that huge black thing hanging over my bed does not look like Mummy..."

"Ahh, THERE'S Mummy!" (He sees me! Do I not have the best job in the whole world?!!)

Smiling at the camera once he has figured out I'm there too! :)

Grainy, blurry, self-photo, blah blah blah, BUT - memory captured! Which is what I wanted :) Seconds after I scooooped his sweet little self up and showed him "us" in the mirror (we always do this right before and right after naps, and chat and smile at each other for a bit then):

LOVE my precious little baby boy! He's the squidgiest, loveliest little treasure I ever did meet (this year! ;) )!

My Husband Rocks! :D

I KNOW!!!! Another post!! :D

It has been a long time since I've been reading blogs (well, mostly blog - Daja's) where every Friday I tune into that blogger's "My Husband Rocks!" Friday. I used to skip reading those posts. I don't even know why! And then I started skimming them. Then eventually READING them (hehe!), and now I smile every time I see a "My Husband Rocks" post pop up on my Blogger reading list :) I don't really know why I wasn't instantly eager to hop on board. I guess I have needed a lot of work from God this past year or so. The last few times that Daja has done "My Husband Rocks!" Friday posts, I have felt so enthusiastic about starting to write similar things about Neil, and then finally today I thought, "That's it! I'm joining in!!" :) And so here I am with my very first "My Husband Rocks!" Friday post! And I'm so excited!

"My Husband Rocks!" Friday was started by Katy Lin. The button below (and I'm adding one to my sidebar, woohoo!) is a link to the post where she writes about why she started it. I really want to start focusing on the great aspects of my lovely husband on a regular basis (for the whole wide web to see!) because I want to train my mind to think of him positively and gratefully as much as possible, and I think this will be a really helpful tool. The more I focus on the positives, the less I will be dwelling on the negatives. And part of my role in my marriage is to respect and uplift my husband, not just within our relationship but for others to see as well. This is a big step for me in doing this, and I'm so happy about that! :)

One of my favourite things about Neil is that he is a WONDERFUL father. He gets discouraged and thinks that he's not such a great father at times, as I'm sure all fathers do, but he really and truly is a lovely father to our little boys.

He coos and gurgles with our babies for ages at a time, just holding conversations with them. I love watching this! It melts my heart a little :)

He tickles and wrestles with our toddlers until they are shiny-eyed, squealing with joy, and breathless.

He takes time for them, and plays on the floor with them, building car parks and Duplo and train tracks. He takes the three older boys out for long walks on the weekends.

He's so affectionate with a cuddly or clingy little one, or somebody who is sleepy or who has just woken up from a long nap. Our little boys get lots of kisses and cuddles from Daddy, and that is such a precious thing!

He will spend hours (sometimes literally!) at a time walking or rocking a fussing baby, or a poorly toddler. He will let sick children sleep on his front on the sofa. He won't flinch or try to get out of the way if a child on his front starts vomiting. He sometimes sleeps scrunched up on the edge of a mattress because a little boy who has had a nightmare wanted to sleep next to Daddy, and he always lets them. He's so loving and kind to the boys.

Nobody is a perfect parent, and everybody has their moments where they did not act loving or kind. I am not trying to paint Neil as perfect! ;) But he is a wonderful father to our little boys, and I am full of thankfulness to God for blessing me with such a man! My husband rocks! He is a fantastic father! :)

Comparing my four boys at 3 months old

Sweet little Benjamin is now 3 months old (nearly 3 and a half months already!) so it's time for the comparison photo! Long-term readers might remember the one. When Arthur was 2 and a half months old, I took a photo of him wearing a white sleepsuit with little green stars on it, lying on a homemade changing mat cover. When Matthew was just over 3 months old, I took a photo of him wearing the same outfit on the same changing mat cover, just to compare the two boys. They are SO different! It was amazing to see how very different they were as babies, comparing those photos! So, when Nathan reached that age, I did the same thing with him. I would have taken Benjamin's comparison photo a bit earlier than this, except that I have been searching for the changing mat cover for a week or so. I can't find it! :( I know it's in the house somewhere, or perhaps it never made it out of the loft this time round? Anyway, I can't find it, and I don't want him to get any bigger or older before I take the photo. The sleepsuit is what counts more than anything else, so I went ahead and took the photos today :) I used a towel for Benjamin to lie on that had a similar background colour, so it would look vaguely the same.

So here we go again! Starting with Arthur, and in chronological order, here are my baby boys at 3 months of age, give or take a week or two! :)

Arthur:

Matthew:

Nathan:

Benjamin:

Am I not just hugely INCREDIBLY blessed, to have four (FOUR!) sons?!?! I just think God is amazing. He's so gracious to bless me this way. I sometimes stop and just don't know how to fathom it. It's so wonderful!

So what do you think of Benjamin now, against his brothers? I still feel that he looks much more like Arthur than the other two boys do, and he's looked that way from birth. He has some of Nathan to him, but other than that not too much resemblence. Somehow he is yet ANOTHER completely different combination! No peas in pods for me, I guess! ;) I think he looks most like Arthur, but he's completely his own little unique person too, in looks.

I have a squillion more photos from today (mostly of Benjamin, and many from the same little session that I took the above photo at), but it's already late and I will post those another time. It's SO much easier to post these little bite-sized posts, than my usual epic long-winded things! ;) Sometimes I love to just waffle out all my thoughts, and other times I need to catch up on a TON of newsy stuff all at once, but it's so nice to be able to be BRIEF and to-the-point!! So rare for me, haha! It means I update more often that way, and I'm happy to be doing that. I'll update again soon, I hope. I'm going to finish preparing Arthur's maths lesson for tomorrow, and then go to bed. Night night! :)

Aaaargh!

Just sent the following email to Neil at work:

Dear Mr. (Surname),

Your children have played tug of war with your home telephone until the cord snapped, therefore you cannot contact your wife for the remainder of the day. She has tried to set up the new telephone but has discovered that it requires seven hours of pre-charging before it can be used.

Your wife has subsequently locked the children in the car and retired to bed with a box of chocolates and a bottle of wine.*

She may check her email later in case you wish to contact her.

Yours Sincerely,

Mrs. A. Frazzle

* this statement is sadly completely untrue.

Dinosaur fossil and homeschooling update!

It's way too late, but I do not want to leave the last entry up as the latest one for too long! Jemma contacted me the day after I wrote it, and (very graciously, I might add! We differ in our beliefs and she's 110% gracious and non-judgemental of me and mine) pointed out that the authenticity of the dinosaur/human fossil I showed in my last entry has been refuted, and she gave me a link to an article (essay! It's long!) that explains this in a lot of detail. I'm really grateful to Jemma for pointing this out to me so quickly. You can read the article here.

I have to admit I'm kind of disappointed! I believe the whole Bible is absolute truth - I made a decision to believe that when I chose to put my trust in God, which is why I get excited if evidence comes up to support that, naturally. But the thing I feel the MOST is just angry and sad that there are Christians out there who lie and manipulate. Jemma wondered if they weren't necessarily setting out to manipulate and deceive deliberately, but even so, it's just so saddening to me. How on earth can that be okay with them, if they truly have their hearts set on God?!?! How does that glorify God, or please Him at all? Never mind if they thought it would be to "help" God's cause - it DOESN'T!!! Manipulating or fabricating the truth is just NOT right with God, and ultimately will do the opposite of glorifying God, and a Christian should be all about glorifying and pleasing God. It just makes me so angry and sad all at the same time.

Neil and I stumbled across the original article on the fossil about 10 minutes before I posted here about it, and had never heard about it before. I guess that's a lesson learnt for me - next time I will not so innocently believe that just because someone is a Christian they are telling the truth, ugh. I'll look into it further BEFORE being so excited that I blurt it out here first! ;)

Emma asked me a few questions which I haven't got much time to answer but I'll give it a quick go! :)

I think I probably seem less open-minded and questioning as a Christian than I used to because I am becoming more settled and comfortable with what I believe. I am also settling into a deeper relationship with God than I have had before. A LOT is changing within me over this past year or so. Every now and then Neil and I talk about it, because I'm so aware of things CHANGING for me, in my heart and mind mostly. I guess that sounds vague, but to quickly grab a few examples - my view of motherhood has been changing, and I am so much more comfortable where I am in my role. I do not desperately clutch for "me time" any more, which used to be something I needed so very often, and I probably used to write about that a fair bit in my diary too. No longer. I don't feel the need for "me time" any more, specifically because God is showing me His heart for my role as a mother, and changing MY heart about it. I am less selfish than I once was, in my heart attitudes (don't get me wrong though, I still have a LONG way to go!). Also in terms of respecting and submitting to my husband. I have a LONG way to go there too! ;) It feels inside like I have been "tough" clay for so long, and now I feel that clay softening. It feels better. Sort of like a muscle that's tired of being taut all the time, and has that comfy zingy feel of a used muscle that's relaxing. I know that's a weird analogy. But my mindsets on life that gave me so much stress, they are softening and changing, purely due to God opening my eyes to some stuff, and enabling me to embrace it.

Most of all my absolute trust and confidence in God is deepening, deepening, deepening, like a pebble that has plopped into reeeeally deep water and it's still sinking down and down. It's so very freeing and comfortable to TRUST God, and not hold stuff back. I didn't even know about areas that I was holding back from him until the last year or two. I have really had a lot of big stuff revealed to me by God over the last year or so, and giving it over to God has transformed my heart and mind, and softened and deepened and matured my walk with God. I don't mean to talk myself up, just to explain how it feels to me when I think back over it and try to put it into words. There are still plenty of areas of my life that I am having trouble giving over to God completely, and so I remain pretty wretched actually! ;) But anyway, that's what I mean - things have really been changing, and I have been putting my trust in God more and more, and feeling so much happier and stronger, and more settled and comfortable in myself and in my beliefs and values. More confident too. It's all good stuff! :) So I can see why to long-term readers I might appear to be more "set in my ways" and not questioning stuff so much. It's the HUGE amount of questioning that I've been doing that is gradually leading me to the answers I sought, and I am beginning to settle into my beliefs and feel confident in them more than I used to. I don't think that's a bad thing :)

Also the big thing about dinosaurs for me is just that I believe the Bible when it said that God created everything at the start. So, not dinosaurs first and then millions of years later, humans. Or anything like that (never mind the whole humans evolving thing, which I also don't believe because I trust in what the Bible says that God created humans right at the beginning). So if evidence ever came up to prove that humans and dinosaurs really did live at the same time, then yes, I WOULD be very excited about that! ;) There are other bits of evidence that do exist, but I'm not going to blog about those till I've checked them out a bit more - learned my lesson! ;)

Emma's last question was about what my grandparents think about us homeschooling, because I was really not looking forward to telling them about it a while back, since they seemed pretty opposed to it. They are teachers and have both had long careers. Grandoug was a headmaster for a long time and then a university lecturer even when I was a teenager. The WHOLE family is full of teachers actually! All my grandparents (except Grandaddy who was a doctor), my auntie (I only have one!), and both my parents. Daddy taught music at a primary school for some years. My mum was a P.E. teacher at secondary school level, for her whole career, between having children. So to NOT do the school thing is totally alien to any of them, lol! None of my family are Christians so they don't get the "God" part of it either. Which doesn't help my cause! ;)

Thankfully it went okay after all. I reached a stage where I felt suddenly confident in my ability to pull it off (homeschooling, that is!) and that made it much easier to tell them. I had answers to all their questions and felt at ease saying them which probably helped their confidence about it too. They hadn't listened to me before when I'd told them I was already teaching Arthur to read (earlier in the year), so now to tell them he's reading and he's progressing well and enjoying the daily lessons that we do, seemed to surprise and impress them. I told them we had a maths curriculum coming in the post and I explained the other subjects we'd be studying, and what the littler boys would be doing. I told them what time of day we'd devote to school time. Granny seemed pretty upbeat and interested when I talked it through with her, which was a relief! :)

My parents are very supportive of our homeschooling, actually! :) I had a nightmare time at school some of the time (well, most of it really) and they had stress over it too, therefore. Nothing seemed well suited to me and they were constantly trying to make it better, or fit my needs, or try to express this to my teachers, etc. I think that is why they are happy for me to teach my own children because then I (nor my children, for that matter) will ever have to deal with that kind of situation. Their learning is individually tailored to them, and there couldn't be a teacher with a greater interest in getting it exactly right for them than me. So I think that's why they are very supportive.

My brother is very interested in what we're doing, asks a lot of questions, and wants me to keep him posted about it all the time. I wonder if he may be questioning the idea with Sarah for their children in the future? Maybe I'm reading too much into it, and I haven't actually asked them directly, so I don't know. But he's supportive and interested. Did I say here yet that they're expecting a baby?!?! I can't believe I haven't yet - aaargh! They have sweet little Thea, who is 2 and a half. And a new baby is due in February, almost exactly when Nathan was due! How exciting!!!! :D

Neil's family seem somewhat skeptical, but ask interested questions about homeschooling. They're polite about it, at least! :) Neil's mum was quite dubious at first, but then a family moved over from the States and joined her church and they homeschool, and suddenly getting to know them means that she's understanding the benefits of homeschooling and is now very supportive of us doing it (yay!). Neil's brother was always very neutral about it to us, but when he came over last and he was talking to Arthur about something, he said afterwards that he was so impressed with what Arthur knew about things beyond his years, and that he had been unsure about homeschooling, but talking to Arthur made him change his mind! He's excited for us now! :)

So all in all, we're blessed to have a pretty supportive family when it comes to homeschooling! :)

Arthur is still loving school, and it's an absolute joy for me! I am falling more in love with it each week! I have to prepare school every evening but Friday and Saturday evenings, and sometimes that takes up a good chunk of my evening, but I LOVE doing it! :) Arthur is on Lesson 45 out of 100 in his reading lessons, and his most recent learnings have been question marks, quotation marks, and recognising sentences. He reads the words mostly without sounding them out first now, although I do still have to stop him and get him to sound out any words that he guesses in order to read faster! ;) He hates to slow down! To give an example of what he's doing at the moment in his lessons - today's reading for Arthur was this:

"he has no feet. he has no nose. he has no teeth. he is not a cow. and he is not a cat. is he a rat? no. he is not a rat." (it was a worm!)

He does word reading and sounds practise (and sometimes word rhyming) before getting to the short story at the end of the lesson. He hasn't done all the different sounds yet, nor capital letters. Punctuation is a new thing that was introduced maybe 5 or 6 lessons ago. He is loving it!

We've only done 10 lessons of his maths curriculum so far, so it's still early days, but he is really enjoying it. I am too! Examples of what he's doing so far are numbers 1-10 (seeing them in groups of 5 plus something - so 8 is 5 and 3, and 10 is 5 and 5), entering numbers on the abacus without having to count them out (number recognition), quadrilaterals, triangles, parallel and perpendicular lines and planes (!!), and writing tally marks. I LOVE LOVE LOVE his maths curriculum - Right Start Mathematics - it's wonderful! So hands on, and full of games and activities and songs and gluing and drawing and so on. I LOVE it. I also love the method. It's nothing like the method taught in schools in this country, as it's based on Asian teaching methods (specifically Japanese I think). It makes SO MUCH SENSE!! Next lesson, one of the new things he'll do is working with geoboards to make geometric shapes with rubber bands. I love it! :)

Bible study is going well with the boys too. Matthew doesn't appear to take much in and doesn't have much of an attention span either, but that's okay. He sticks around and sometimes draws next to me while I read it. Arthur seems to be REALLY taking it in, asking questions, and understanding all that I'm reading him (going by the answers he gives to the questions I ask him). I'm using the book 'Leading Little Ones to God' and I soooo highly recommend it! It's a bit old fashioned, but there's nothing wrong with that. We don't know the hymns to sing but I substitute them with songs we do know that fit the lesson's theme, or if I don't have a good substitute then I sing the words of the suggested hymn to a tune that fits the words! :)

Aaaah it's getting so late and I've ended up posting a HUGE entry after all! I must must must go to bed! There's more to write about what we're doing at school, but I'll have to write about it another time. I'll leave you with a sweet funny thing that I overheard today - I already posted it at Facebook for those of you who know me there, but I loved it so much that I want to post it here too, for prosperity! :)

Arthur wanted me to draw him a digger to colour in. He begged me for an HOUR and finally I had a moment and drew him one. He spent an hour colouring it in, and he did it sooo neatly! I haven't seen him colour like that before. He didn't go outside the lines once, and there were no gaps in the colouring. He was ever so pleased with his work. After a while, Matthew came to sit at the school table next to him and leaned on his elbows watching Arthur colour. When he saw how well Arthur was doing, he gasped in amazement and said, "Arthur, you're a GENENUS!" which he has been saying quite a bit lately (genius, that is!) to people when they do something like find the last jigsaw piece! Anyway, Arthur continued colouring and didn't look up, but he said casually, "Thanks Math. Well, it's just that I've been practising for years and years...." by way of explanation! ;) Hahaha! Funny little boys! :)

Okay, bed! But I'll be back again soon! :)

Benjamin is 3 months old already!

My teeny tiny boy is already a quarter of a year old! I don't know how that time has whizzed by so fast, but there it is! Benjamin is so precious!! I know, I'm so predictable! ;) I adore him completely.

He turned 3 months on October 9th, and I have been writing this entry in bits and pieces since the 10th! Now it's the evening of the 12th, but hopefully I'll finish it tonight. I knew I would write lots and post lots of photos, and I didn't have time to write it all in one go (though I did try!). I took some extra photos today and yesterday, which is a bonus! :)

Today (Oct 11th), Benjamin rolled from tummy to back for the first time. It was a complete accident, hehe! He was doing tummy time - where he can now get his whole chest, shoulders and head upright looking ahead, leaning on his elbows! - and he had his head soooo high up looking over to where Neil was tickling Nathan on the armchair. He was practically craning his neck to see, and his sweet little eyes were bugging with curiosity! He leaned juuust that bit too far to see, and suddenly - flip! - he was on his back looking very confused, hehehe! The boys were ecstatic, and we all made a big thing of it. He got tired pretty fast after that, so he hasn't done it again since. He is trying and tryyyying to roll from back to front. He gets onto his side really easily (he now does this automatically when semi-awake at night to get in position to breastfeed, as we lie tummy-to-tummy in bed to nurse *bliss*), but now he's clenching his tummy muscles and straaaaining to roll forward from his side to his tummy - it's so sweet to watch him persevere like he does! He seems so determined! His underneath leg always gets in his way, or his underneath shoulder. He'll get there soon, I should think! Here he is a few weeks ago, trying to roll, with his brothers cheering him on (except Nathan who isn't all that impressed with such things!):

He is happiest "talking" to somebody, and he gives the biggest smiles and vocal sounds to me (sooo thrilled!!) and then to Neil, and he also loves chatting to Matthew, who is the only one of his brothers who will hold still and stay calm long enough to really get him cooing and smiling with intent. He loves Matthew, and gives him the fondest smiles and happiest little sounds. Arthur is learning to keep still long enough too, but he keeps interrupting Benjamin by looking away from him at me and using a LOUD VOICE to tell me what Benjamin just did, which Benjamin doesn't go for too much! Matthew just puts his face near to Benjamin's, says "Hiya..." really softly, and waits, keeping eye contact with Benjamin - ideal for a little baby! :) He uses a soft voice occasionally to tell me that Benjamin is talking to him, and doesn't break eye contact with the baby while he does so, which means that Benjamin carries on cooing and smiling. Arthur leaps around like a madman continually (as is his nature!) and seems to talk in a constant yell, and can never stop talking or moving for long, and Benjamin is (unfortunately!) not a fan of loud noises!

He has sooooooo many different cooing vocal sounds now, and we hold quite long conversations (I copy his sounds), which he LOVES. His eyes get all shiny and wide, and he does the biggest smiles! He has recently started screeching and skwawking more, and making sharp squealy inhalations like he's really excited, when he's talking in a particularly animated way!

Here are a few photos from about a week ago, of Benjamin with his daddy, communicating! :)

He drools constantly now, and gnaws on his fingers all the time. I have started giving him teething powder when it's particularly bad. I'm sure he's having teething pain. All my others have by this age, even Nathan who didn't GET any teeth till he was 11 months old, haha! His little teeth will be pushing up in his gums by now, so it's causing him discomfort (and drooooool!).

His newborn hair is falling out still, but he has a good amount left at the back near the nape of his neck, and the traditional (!) long sticky-up bit on top, which is getting thinner. His new hair is coming in already! I'm sure the others were mostly bald from this stage till about 4 or 5 months old. He started with a shadowy look to his whole scalp under the newborn hair, and now he has about half a cm of hair all over his head! It's fine and downy and scrumptiously soft. It's the same colour as Arthur and Nathan's hair. I can't believe how fast it's growing - his fingernails are the same. I have to cut them right down every 3 days or else he scratches his face and draws blood! I am sure he will need a haircut before his first birthday.

Benjamin is still such a big boy! I don't know his latest weight and length, and probably won't at all from now on, as I'm unlikely to get chance to get him weighed and measured (they don't have regular appointments scheduled for this in the UK). I could take him to a baby clinic but I'm not likely to do that. It doesn't really matter anyway - I can see he's growing well and very healthy, so that's all that matters. He is currently comfortably fitting all his 3-6 month baby clothes. A few tops have already been put away too small for him, and as far as popper vests (onesies) or sleepsuits go - we've had to get the box of 6-9 month clothing down!!!! I thought they'd be hanging off him, but no, he fits all but 2 of the 6-9 month sleepsuits really well, without even having to turn the sleeves, and the toes don't hang off either! I remember Arthur wearing some of these when he was 2+ months old too, but that was mainly due to him having a bulky cloth nappy on, and the feet of the sleepsuits used to hang off the end of his toes by several inches! Benjamin doesn't wear cloth nappies and is clearly a much bigger boy than any of his brothers were at this age! At church last Sunday, a lady looked at him sleeping and said to me that he was DEFINITELY bigger than his brothers! How funny that he's the littlest of them all and yet will probably end up the tallest when they're grown!

My favourite things about Benjamin at the moment are:

* The way he clings to me when I hold him, clutching my top with his little fists while he looks around on my shoulder. He stays clinging for ages, and I love it so much!

* His sweet new hair mixed with his soft newborn hair. His little head always feels so warm and soft and NEW still, and I could rub my cheek on it and kiss it all day long.

* His soft doughy little cheeks! Ohhh they're too precious for words! I kiss them aplenty. I think I said this about Nathan's cheeks too, but I'm surprised they're not chapped for how much I kiss them! ;)

* The way he rolls onto his side and kind of snuffles about urgently for milk when he's hungry. He usually tries to get milk out of his knuckles while he's waiting, and gets increasingly frustrated! I love the "baby bird" stage in little babies!

* Breastfeeding him. Absolutely bliss! Nothing so precious in the whole world than breastfeeding a sleepy hungry baby till they doze off. I love how his eyes roll shut with the blissed-out look!

* Squidgy little thighs!! Oh my goodness!! I could eat this boy right up, hehe! ;)

* The soft sounds he makes to talk to me, and the biiiig smiles he does just for me when were alone in the bedroom with no other noises or distractions. I love the soft little gaspy happy breathing that goes with the big smiles too :) I love the way his eyes shine when he smiles.

* How easy-going he is, in general. He isn't a "high-maintenance" baby. He likes to be held, and I hold him a lot in my arms, just upright either facing into me or out into the room. He likes both. He likes to look around from the comfort of my arms, and I like doing that with him too. When I have to put him down, he gets on happily lying on a playmat and talking to the school display or a brother! He hates being put in his bouncy chair now, but once I have rocked him and talked to him a bit, he will happily watch (and talk to) the toy bar which has sounds and lights, for ages. He will also just sit in the chair and watch his brothers for a long time too. He sometimes still rocks to sleep in there, and I transfer him to his Amby Hammock once he's sleeping, but increasingly now I am taking him upstairs when he's sleepy and putting him in the hammock, and rocking/bouncing till he falls asleep. If I am right about him being sleepy, this doesn't take long at all. I wasn't too impressed with that hammock at first, but I love it now! :) When he wakes or stirs, I often get him right back to sleep just going in and rocking or bouncing his little bed. I can't do anything to get him back to sleep if he's woken after only a short nap, if he's in my bed or something.

Here he is in the bouncy chair a couple of weeks ago, looking rather put-out that I'm STILL taking photos, haha! I took quite a few leading up to this one, but they didn't come out too well.

And another of Benjamin the bouncy chair while we did school one afternoon. He sometimes still brings up lots of milk, and if he's recently had a feed I will lay a T-shirt or terry towel on the bouncy chair before I put him in it, so that if he brings up milk I won't have to strip the chair down and wash it - just the T-shirt! :)

Benjamin sleeps usually the whole evening now, in his hammock. I have adjusted things so that he is TIRED between 6 and 7pm, and so that's when he goes to bed. That allows us to get the boys into bed shortly after that (if all goes to plan!), as they were showing obvious signs of being sleep deprived when they were going to bed later. They get up at 6 or so in the morning so they need to go to bed at 7pm really. It's soooo nice to have Benjamin going to bed at the other boys' bedtime (before even!). He zonks right out after a big breastfeed - I rock him in the hammock. He sleeps till midnight-ish, although this week he has been waking once during the evening - probably another growth spurt. He has these soooo frequently! Then I nurse him and he stays in my bed after that. I go to bed around that time, and he wakes again sometimes twice or sometimes once, before waking for the day around 7am. Often his pattern is bed at 6.30pm, wake at 11.30 or so - nurse and be-burped without really waking up properly, wake again around 1.30am, nappy change (he is a HEAVY wetter and even wets through disposables if he's in the same one the whole 12-hour night!) and feed, wake again at 4 or so to feed, and up at 7am. I can manage this fine.

I took a few photos yesterday and today - yay! Here is Benjamin helping me with the mountain of clean washing to fold while the other boys were at the park with Neil:

Less than impressed with me at bedtime last night, because I was taking a photo of him all ready for bed in his sweet little grobag, instead of actually PUTTING him to bed! He was tired out and ready to go. The last of my babies to wear grobags was Arthur, so it's nice to be putting them to use again. My last two babies were tummy sleepers and those don't really work well with grobags. Arthur and Benjamin are very much BACK sleepers! :)

The photo at the top of this entry is one that I took today. I made it black and white (in a very amateur way!) because I wasn't happy with the colour and noise in the photo when it was in colour. The other two I took at the same time came out slightly better for colour, so I didn't change them. Here they are!

Is he not completely squishably precious?!?! Ahhh, his cheeks are the most wonderful things, I love them so much! ;) His eyes are clear grey, sort of mid-grey. I feel sure they haven't finished what they're doing yet, and can't wait to see what colour they end up being! I WISH I could just get a good photo in GOOD light of all four boys in a row looking up at the light or something marvellous like that, because at this moment, I have four children - one with brown eyes, one with green eyes, one with grey eyes, and one with blue eyes! I think that's amazing, and I just WISH I could photograph it before somebody's eyes change colour!!

My nickname affliction continues from child to child, haha! ;) Benjamin has a zillion cutesy nicknames, as his brothers have done, but current frequently used ones are Benji-woo-loo, and Benjaminny still. He is also my little truffle-wump! :) That's my favourite one right now. If I'm holding him and I call him that, I just want to squidge him right up and kiss his cheeks for ever more. *sigh* He has a lot more nicknames than that but I am slightly too embarrassed to share any more! ;)

I could write about Benjamin for hours without stopping, really I could. I just adore that precious baby boy! It has been almost exactly one year since he was conceived, and I'm amazed that he has existed for a whole year already! I LOVE being his mummy! :) There is no novelty-wearing-off thing at all, even though he's the fourth boy in four years. Every little thing he does is as precious and thrilling to me as if he were my first baby.

All the boys were born between the 9th and 14th of the month, so everyone is changing up a month around here! ;) The 9th also marked exactly ONE MONTH to go until Arthur's 5th birthday!! And Nathan turned 21 months today. Matthew will be 3 years and 4 months in 2 days. Next I want to write a post about Nathan, similar to this one, to mark him being 1 and three quarters! Only 3 months until he's 2!!! Crazy. I want to catch up on everything he's doing here, so I have a record before it all vanishes from my memory. He's changing so fast. I'll try to do that asap!

First week of school complete, and "school room" photos! :)

Finally I have photos to show you of our new home-school area in our living room! Yayness! You'll remember the "before" shot, when we had the 3-seater sofa and the bookshelf with all the videos and TV on them?

We only have this one room to live in during the day. We have a kitchen, which is just big enough to fit a table and chairs in it, at the back of the house leading off this living room, and that is our downstairs. It's tight with four little boys! ;) But surprisingly manageable, seriously! We knew we had to shuffle things about if we were going to home school before we moved somewhere bigger. So, we got rid of the 3-seater sofa, and the bookshelf, boxed a lot of videos up, and bought a few new items for our school area! This was SO much fun for me to organise! The 3-seater sofa covered a patch of floor that had a rectangle of carpet cut away, exposing rough concrete, so I still plan to get a colourful rug to go under the table where that is, but I'll get to that at a later point. I also want to get strong shelving to hold the DVD/CD/video players and the printer too. The computer and TV sit on top of my new classroom cabinet with the sliding doors and barrel lock (you can't tell I'm completely in love with it, can you??). The other stuff that sits with them makes all the "stuff" fill up the surface and it looks messy and cluttered. So I want to improve the way that stuff is stored. But otherwise, here is our "school room" area!

There is all is in front of you (it's not big because we don't have much space!), but here is a more detailed "guided tour"! :) I'm so proud of the little school zone that I've created for educating my children at! :)

Blackboard - yes, we have a blackboard!!! :D I'm so excited about this purchase! I wanted a good display board of some sort, but the choices seemed to be a bulletin board (pins = no-no), a white board (I don't like the look of them so much, they seem kind of "officey" to me), or a blackboard. I loved the look of the blackboards when I started researching things for the school area! I bought liquid chalk markers in a pack of different colours, because those are so bold and bright, and I liked that. They still wipe off with a wet cloth, and most of what I have written on the blackboard is not going to be wiped off. The blackboard displays what we do at school, at a glance, the character trait we are studying each week (this is the only bit I will wipe off and re-write, on a weekly basis), and a Bible verse at the bottom that is our current memory verse (our first one!) and also our source to point out and talk through with the boys every single time we discipline them for disobeying or being rude to us at the moment. Arthur and Matthew almost have this memorized, just from us repeating it over and over. I have been dropping more and more words as I say it to them, and they fill in the gaps. We will keep this verse there permanently as it's part of our discipline method as well as a memory verse.

Next to the blackboard we have Arthur's magnetic calendar which we got him for Christmas last year. He loves it, and it's great to finally be able to display it properly somewhere. The first thing we do before starting school in the morning is to set the calendar. I found a supremely cute peg to hang it on, and I love that it happens to have a bus with "school bus" on the side! ;) I originally liked it for the bright colours and cute design, before I realised the bus was a school bus. Sorry about the glare/angle on this photo - it makes my eyes feel funny to look at it, but I haven't got a better one for now:

Above the blackboard and calendar, I wanted to put a clock that just had numbers and hands, and which was clear (to help them learn to tell the time) but colourful. It took me ages to find one I liked, and I'm really happy with the one I put up on our school wall! :)

Above the clock I knew I wanted to display the button numbers we made for a craft activity a few weeks after Benjamin was born. Matthew and Arthur and I worked on these over several days when the two little ones were sleeping, and it was a fun, relaxed activity for us. I bought a bumper pack of buttons for crafts from a school supplier (very cheap!) and we used our squidgy sparkles numbers as templates (after the boys played with them for a while) and drew round them on card, cut them out, and the boys glued buttons of their choosing all over them. We put them up on the other wall after we made them, and I like them so much on the wall that I knew I wanted them as part of our school display area. Nathan loves them and points to them all the time saying, "Nuh-buh, nuh-buh!" and even Benjamin spends ages staring at them from my arms or his bouncy chair and cooing at them fondly! ;) Here's a clearer photo of them, and another close up:

Then we have the new bookshelf that I bought for the boys' books. This isn't strictly a school item, since all the school books are kept in the locked school cabinet (which I can't wait to show you with photos, but I haven't taken any yet!). But the only wall space left was next to the school table, and it fits in nicely anyway. The little boys have books to read from there for school, but they all access it all day long as well, obviously. I love that it sits almost flat to the wall, and looks nice, and displays their books front-facing for them to see easily. They love tidying their books away now too, which is an added bonus! ;) Yes, that is crayon on either side of the bookshelf. *sigh* The black crayon between the table and the bookshelf is Nathan's "school work" from this past week. Needless to say, I put him in a different seat after that!

Here's my smallest pupil! ;) He's working on connecting neural pathways and growing big and strong, as you can see. Pretty complicated and important for his first week at school! ;)

Okay, photos of actual school taking place!! Wheee, I'm so excited to be homeschooling my little ones!!!!! :) Here is a photo of Arthur and Matthew right after we sat down at the table on Monday morning for our first ever real school session! They were soooo excited! See Arthur's hands - I read on Jill's homeschooling blog about how she has her children show that they are ready to learn by folding their hands in front of them at the table, and suggested it to Arthur, who JUMPED at the idea! He loves it, and he's doing it in the photo here. This week he has sometimes sat there impatiently with his hands folded, saying, "Come on Mummy!" when I am still getting the little boys started with their activities as we start school!

Arthur at school: See the concrete under the table? Yeah, I can't wait to cover that up with something pretty! When we do school, I sit in the middle chair so that I have Matthew and Nathan separated from Arthur if they are doing drawing or colouring at the table (like it's set up in the photo - they had finished this activity when I took this photo), so that they don't distract Arthur too much, and so that I can access them as well if they need me, without disturbing Arthur by talking across him.

Arthur writing his letters at the end of his reading lesson:

Arthur doing maths: Matthew has taken to spending some of Arthur's reading and maths lessons standing quietly at Arthur's side, just looking over his shoulder with interest and taking in what he's doing. It doesn't seem to bother Arthur in the least. He loved the pre-school activities at first, and still does, but he's increasingly interested in doing "books" like Arthur, and even cried when he had sat down in Arthur's chair after Arthur finished his reading lesson, saying "My turn!" and I said I wasn't going to teach him to read just yet! I think I will re-assess at Christmas. He'll be three-and-a-half then, and that's the earliest the book recommends starting. The earliest I was considering it was after Christmas, but I had no plans to unless he was showing obvious signs of wanting to or being ready. I may start with him in the new year if he is still this eager. In the mean time I think I will work with him on the alphabet a bit, and holding his pencil correctly in readiness for letter formation.

Oops, got side-tracked! ;) So here is Arthur doing maths lessons. He is sorting coloured tiles at the end of one maths lesson, and actually the other photo is after we finished a different maths lesson. He constructed triangles and quadrilaterals with the tally sticks in that lesson, but he was working on a railway by this stage! ;) These are lessons from the Right Start Mathematics curriculum.

Matthew and Nathan do sometimes sit in their Active World Trays with activities in there, but I have found as the week went on (and during the practise week a bit too) that I don't need to be quite so strict about them sitting in their trays in order for us to do school without distraction. I have actually found it's better for all of us if I have a few different "centres" with different activities. I have a tray or two on the floor with different pre-school manipulative toys and activities in, like lacing numbers or counting bears, etc. I put books and car magazines (they love to leaf through looking at the cars!) on the arm of the sofa, so they can sit up there and read quietly if they want to. And usually we have huge sheets of sugar paper and crayons on the table for them to draw if they want to. This works pretty well at the moment. Matthew will obey me pretty well about staying in his tray when we do it that way, but Nathan screeches and hates having to stay in the tray, and it takes forever to keep on correcting him. If he's finished activities and causing distraction then I usually insist on him staying on his tray while we finish school, but that's the point where he usually decides he wants to go upstairs for a nap! ;) So I take him up, and it's much better for us (and him, he's usually tired by then!) if he's napping.

Here's Nathey in his tray (a split second before the escape-effort and screeching began for the millionth time that morning!) - he loves The Gingerbread Man! It's his favourite book at the moment. He has Monkey and Baggy (blankie), and a pillow in his tray too, in case he wants to snuggle or rest.

I have discovered he MUCH prefers sitting at the table like a big boy to do school! :) He pulls out his chair when I say it's time, and climbs in eagerly, saying, "Cool, cool!" ("school", that is!), and sits there beaming for a moment, before starting on, "Daw, daw!" (draw) patting the table with enthusiasm until I get the drawing supplies out! Sweetie pie :)

School for Matthew is mostly at the table now, until he gets bored and chooses either the tray activity or the magazines on the sofa. He sometimes comes back to the table activity after that, but school doesn't take long so that's all the time there usually is! Sometimes he just draws, or sometimes I get out a colouring book for him. Other times I photocopy a worksheet (we bought a basic portable photocopier which sits upstairs. It's really small and as basic as they come, but it does the job of reproducing a black and white page from a workbook, and I am so thankful to have it for school!) from a pre-school workbook, and he does that. They have little exercises like drawing a line from the bird to the worm, or drawing the missing tails on the mice, or joining the dots to write letters and numbers, etc. He colours in the pictures when he's finished. The photo of the little boys drawing was taken at the weekend, so not technically "school". But they do this for school too, so I'm posting it!

School is going great! Arthur's favourite lesson is maths. He started using the abacus on Friday and was so excited! Everything is really basic so far, nice and simple to start off with, and he is kind of impatient to learn "bigger" things, but enjoying the lessons all the same. The same with reading really. He is whizzing through the lessons with no problems. The only problems I have are related to him trying to go too fast, or getting impatient with the speed of the lesson. He reads the words the fast way before I can get him to sound them out slowly the first time. He is eager every day to see if he's learning a new sound today. Those come every other day so he's disappointed half the time! ;)

Bible study is going nicely. I love I get to teach them about God in a sort of sit-down environment every day. They learn about God in our usual daily stuff anyway, especially from discipline, and we are doing a memory verse that I recite to them many times throughout the day here and there. But I love reading them a thought-provoking lesson about God, and then discussing it with them, praying, reading the Bible to them, and singing praise to God with them. They don't sing with me because they don't know the words, but they listen and do actions if the songs have actions. The Bible lessons are short and sweet, and I love starting the school session with them each day. This week coming I am going to introduce the character building lessons. We did only "core school" (as I call it! It's what we'll fall back to any time we're pressed or ill or whatnot) for the first week (reading, writing, maths, Bible), and I plan to introduce the additional subjects gradually. Character building starts this week with "Attentiveness" as the first trait to study! :)

We do music appreciation every day right as our school session finishes. I play a CD of a different composer each day as we tidy and the boys start to play with cars and things. As it plays I talk to them about the composer (which I started after Arthur started bombarding me with questions about them - I read the information on the CD cover at the moment), and then throughout the CD playing, I occasionally stop to ask them what this part of the music makes them feel like, or what they think the composer was thinking of or seeing when he wrote that part. They are very descriptive with their answers, especially Arthur. He always has a description that I hadn't thought of, and is able to connect his emotions to music very easily. He's quite expressive about feelings when listening to music of any sort, but especially classical music. At the moment, music appreciation consists of classical and jazz, because I want to expose them to those types of music more than any others right now, but I will include other varieties of music at a later date. Arthur likes to learn about when the composer lived, how old he was when he died, where he lived in the world, and so on. On Wednesday our composer of the day was my daddy :) He has written a lot of classical and jazz pieces and recorded them at his little studio, so we have 9 or 10 CDs written and played by Grandy! The boys love that, and have enjoyed listening to his music this week. Arthur seems keen to have a long chat with Grandy about composing music - not "how to", but more an interest in how he does it, what he's thinking when he does it, and so on. He has asked me when he can start learning to play the piano since listening to Grandy play the piano on the CDs, which is a first. Until now, he has been asking repeatedly to play the electric guitar! ;) I am looking into Suzuki piano lessons for the older two, but we don't have anywhere for a piano to go. My dad has always said he wants to buy us a piano when it comes time for our children to learn, if they want to, because music is his life and his passion, and he wants to pass it on to his grandchildren in that way, which is LOVELY! :) His condition is that we need to have a place to put a piano where a child can play it in a private place without being disturbed, as he feels that is essential. I am still going to inquire about the Suzuki piano lessons just to get the info I need.

I have told Arthur about our Unit Studies - that they'll cover geography, history and science (and probably art, maths and reading too!), and that they will be things that he asks to learn about. He was ever so excited, and immediately requested a Stegosaurus unit study. He is suddenly very into dinosaurs lately, and the Stegosaurus is his favourite by far. So this weekend I have started researching and gathering stuff for the Stegosaurus unit study (he also wants a Stegosaurus birthday cake when he turns 5 next month - NEXT MONTH people!!!!), and I'm having fun doing it! Unit Studies will always include Matthew and possibly Nathan in parts too. They'll be fun and informal, and we'll do bits here and there outside of the usual school session, more on some days than others depending on availability and energy! We'll do stuff from baking Stegosaurus-shaped cookies and colouring pages from the internet, to Stegosaurus crafts (lots online if you google!) and learning facts about Stegosaurus. Now, I do not teach evolution folks. I am not an evolutionist, I am a Creationist, and I will be teaching Creation to my children. We will undoubtedly visit the Natural History Museum and so on, and the boys will learn what the world thinks about history and dinosaurs and the beginning of the universe and the Earth, but only in such a way as they know what they're up against. Already there have been plenty of opportunities to talk to them about this, even with things like a programme on CBeebies called Boogie Beebies, with the dinosaur dance episode (Arthur's favourite). No, they did not live 250 million years ago, nor die out 66 million years ago. The guy says that as they watch, and I add, "Um, no, they didn't" and explain what the Bible says to the boys. So, they know that much, but they'll learn more about it as we study these things in more depth.

If anybody is curious about what the Bible teaches about Creation, and how incredibly accurately it's backed up with evidence around the world (completely blowing the evolution theory apart, incidentally!), please check out Answers in Genesis. I went there and searched on all the things I have been most skeptical about, and was blown away by what I found. I bought the set of Answers books for kids, and the set for adults too. I am SO excited by what I am reading, and best of all it has really rejuvenated my relationship with God. I am in constant awe of God all over again, with the evidence of His reality and His Creation right in front of my face. Awesome! :) They have a science curriculum for age 7+ that I am really interested in, when the time comes. Oh man, I wish we had a Creation Museum near us! Those look fantastic!

Anyway, that is the update about school for now! It's so late, and I must go to bed. I am glad to have found time to write about our first week and post photos! I'll be back to write more soon. I have more photos of non-schooly things too! :)
