Waiting for Matthew, and photos of Arthur!

Thank you for the lovely compliments on my toy unit (and of course, my little boy!)!! :)

Just wanted to update here with some more photos of Arthur before I end up giving birth and never getting round to the latest photos I've taken! I am pretty restricted in what I can do these days, as my blood pressure has gone up and I'm just feeling weird and pre-labourish all the time. It hurts me to move about such a lot sometimes, and I just feel exhausted and like I am about to give birth or something! Which I probably am really, given that I'm due next week! :)

Other than that, all is well here. My parents arrive in less than 48 hours (oh my GOSH I am so relieved about that! I just can't relax till they're here) and we are struggling to get the house ready for Matthew still. Especially now that I can't do a thing to help Neil, I can't even look after Arthur on my own for any length of time, not even 30 minutes.

Arthur is so incredibly demanding at the moment! Not in an awful way or anything - the word demanding does give that impression, but I mean he is just 110% energetic ALL of the time. And he requires somebody's FULL attention over every tiny thing at every single moment. He talks non-stop about everything he sees, mostly in babble-talk rather than understandable words, but if I don't acknowledge everything he is pointing out to me, then he shouts the word louder and louder and LOUDER until I acknowledge him. This is becoming increasingly irritating and frustrating for me, especially when I am trying to talk to Neil about something. It is something I don't think he should be allowed to do, so I want to figure out how to "discipline" him over it in some way. I don't feel he should think it's okay to just shout and shout at Mummy or Daddy while they are talking, until they stop what they're doing to acknowledge his shouting. We acknowledge him very quickly and he is usually the main focus of our attention, but I do want him to understand that he can't always be instantly acknowledged (or get stroppy with us about it otherwise!) when we are in the middle of discussing something important.

At the moment, all I am doing is telling him firmly, "Don't shout!" or "Mummy and Daddy are talking at the moment, wait a minute" or something. I know he's still so little but it's driving me crazy and I want him to get the message in some way that it's not okay to yell at us until we give him attention! Lately I have a SUPER short fuse and he only needs to yell a couple of times before I get cross with him and snap his head off :( But yelling and things like banging something loudly to get our attention is just driving me CRAZY these days. I can't bear it, it makes me want to pull my skin off! Sometimes I have to leave the room because I am so angry and riled by Arthur yelling at me that I just want to scream at him, "SHUT UP!!" - which obviously would NOT be helpful! Thank goodness Neil is at home a lot at the moment.

It has been Bank Holiday Weekend so Neil has been home on Monday, and he took Tuesday off (today) as well. My blood pressure went up at the beginning of the weekend, so he phoned work today and told them he can't be there tomorrow, because my blood pressure went up and I can't look after Arthur on my own. I'm so thankful that he did that. I simply can NOT look after Arthur even for an hour, even from lying on the sofa. He is too demanding and knows all the things to do that will make me have to get up, the instant I am lying down. I find it very trying sometimes, but he is still such a treasure and so sweet and smiley, and he can't help that he has toooo much energy and a mummy who can't do anything at the moment. So I don't hold it against him! But it's hard. So I know it sounds bad, but I think I would have put my foot down and TOLD Neil that there was no way he could go to work tomorrow if he had said he had to go in. I absolutely can't do it, and we have nobody else around to help me at all so he HAS to stay home. My mum will be here the next day so he can go to work then. But it's important, y'know? Blood pressure and pregnancy is a pretty big deal and I know work is important too, but it should definitely come second. I feel like that's selfish, but what else can I do? I have to protect myself and my littlest one at the moment. Anyway, I'm so glad it didn't come to that, and Neil arranged to take tomorrow off and work was fine with it :)

Neil fitted the BabyDan thingy to the wall around the bottom of the stairs, when the wall fittings arrived this week :) I'm so glad that's done. We have to be careful about putting any furniture, toys or things like my hospital bags too close to the gate because Arthur uses them to climb on to get over it! A few days ago I found him straddling the gate! Then later the same day Neil was in the kitchen and I was upstairs, and I heard this huge thump followed by "Help! I'm hurt!" crying (you know, the type that makes you sprint like you never knew you could, to get to your little one IMMEDIATELY!). And he was lying on the floor like he had fallen from sitting astride the gate. His push-along car was nearby, and it looked to me like he had pushed it up to the gate to climb on it, and then fallen ON it when he toppled off. Poor Arthur! But he shouldn't have climbed when we had told him not to! He hasn't climbed it since, but we have been making it more difficult for him to get near it since then, and watching him more carefully, so maybe he'll try it again. I hope not! That gate is our last resort to keep him from the stairs!

Arthur is lately VERY into playdough! We went out and bought 2 metres of some bright wipe-clean tablecloth fabric off the roll at a local fabric store, and that is his LARGE craft mat for messy play :) We don't have much access to the kitchen table these days so he plays on the carpet for everything he does. We needed something to protect it when he did drawing, messy play, or playdough, so I figured a LARGE wipe-clean tablecloth would do the trick. It nearly fills our whole carpet space when it's fully spread out, but we usually double it up to make it cover a smaller part of the room. I know it will be GREAT for children's parties and picnics in later years too, and cooking projects with my little ones!

So after we bought that, I finally bought Arthur some playdough. I had a recipe to make some, but I didn't have much time to make it and also I just LOVE the smell of shop-bought playdough!! It's just intoxicating, mmmm! So we bought Tesco's own, which is cheap and just as good as any other. We got tubs of red, yellow, green and blue, and also a box of smaller tubs with some small parts (shhh, not for under 3s!) to press into the dough and make "crazy people"! Arthur loved playing with those at the church creche and we NEVER take our eyes off him for a second when he's playing with playdough anyway, so I got them for him. I keep the small parts in a screw-lid jar that he can't open, in the playdough box on the toy unit :)

Anyway, he asks for "day-doh" every day at least once! He loves it. He doesn't do much with the cutters, but he likes it when I cut playdough stars and hippos and crocodiles and so on with the vast array of cutters that I had ready for his playdough fun! He stacks them up and then squishes them together :) He spends ages pressing small parts into the dough, and then rearranging them. He seemed kind of squeamish about touching the dough at first, but now he LOVES squishing it with gritted teeth for added effect, hehe! At the weekend, Neil took a few photos of Arthur working on a "crazy dough person". He was so absorbed that he didn't even bother to look up when Neil started taking pictures, let alone abandon his activity and grab for the camera! He pressed all the bits into the red dough without any help from Neil (that's our new wipe-clean mat too!):

He also asks to "daw" (draw) many times per day at the moment! He loves drawing with different things. He has marker pens (age 1+ and completely washable!), coloured pencils, and lots of crayons, and he likes to use them all in each sitting. He also makes sure he uses each colour in turn - usually a few strokes (or even just one) with each colour, before carefully placing that crayon/pencil/marker in a neat line with the others and choosing the next one! He's sooo tidy and careful about stuff, I have NO idea where he gets it from! ;)

He has so many new words since my last entry. Most of his new words start out like baby talk, I mean, for example just the vowel sound of the word he's attempting, or the starting consonant. But he uses it consistently with definite reference to that object every time, and over time the way he pronounces it improves. The words he had started saying a few weeks ago are already much clearer to understand, while his newest words can be hard to figure out sometimes! He is very persistant though, and keeps repeating a word at us until we get it! When we finally get it right, he beams this huge, relieved smile and signs, "please", if it's something he is asking for :) Sweetie. "Apple" used to be pronounced "aah-ooh" but now it's "aaa-pool" He lingers ages on the aaa part, it's so sweet how carefully he tries to pronounce words of more than one syllable!

Arthur has also started combining words a little bit, or at least making attempts to get more than one thing across to us at once. Like he'll say, "Aah Dada?" with the all-gone sign, to ask, "Where's Daddy?" Today he wanted to watch the Teletubbies (for the millionth time!) and he walked up to the TV and patted the blank screen, and said, "Mama? Uh-oh!" and waited for my response! He always says, "Uh-oh" to mean the Teletubbies (they say, "Eh-oh" frequently!).

I also noticed a couple of weeks ago that he hadn't called me by name for a very long time. He's been saying "dada" for EVER, but never "mama"! It's weird because "mama" was his first word, very early on, and he used it consistently, with understanding. But then suddenly he stopped saying it. I wondered why, and just figured maybe I'm just there for him every second so he didn't need to use it or something? Anyway, just in the last week he has started using it again :) I love to hear him call me Mama! It's the sweetest sound.

I always ask him what he wants for dessert now, after he finishes his lunch or tea. It's so lovely to have him TELL me what he wants now, and for me to be able to understand him. It feels like a great relief to me, almost a physical weight off, so I know it must be a big relief for him too, to be understood when he tries to tell us things. He nearly always asks for either "ya-ya" (yoghurt), "uns" (raisins) or "BAR!" (cereal bar, said with great enthusiasm as it's one of his favourite snacks!). He has the Heinz toddler cereal bars with fruit in them, but he especially likes MY cereal bars which have "cu-cuk" chips in them ;) He gives me huge smiles while he munches on them, and keeps stopping to point at chocolate chips in the cereal bar. He tells me as he points to them, "Cu-cuk ah bar!" which I proudly take to be his first basic sentence, showing me there is chocolate in his bar! :)

Okay my dinner is ready (lovely Neil!) so I will be back in a while to post those other photos and finish the entry.

Back again! I have two more photos of Arthur breastfeeding, which are non-graphic enough to post here :) I keep wanting photos of things like this taken at the moment, as it's my last chance to capture something absolutely precious to me that will never be the same again in a very short time! I know Arthur will continue to breastfeed for hopefully a long while yet, but it will never be just me and him. Never just "milk for Arthur" any more. I hope he will accept sharing Mummy's milk easily - I'm hoping that Matthew's first feed after his birth will be shared by Arthur if Arthur wants to join in (and if he's awake at the time, obviously!). He likes to switch sides whenever he feels like it, and frequently too, so I'm not sure how he's going to find it when there's someone else attached to the other side! He often falls asleep nursing on one breast whilst holding the other one in both hands like a comfort blankie :) So sweet. He is so much like a tiny baby sometimes when he breastfeeds, that's one of the things I love about extended nursing so much - it allows the little one to still BE a baby, as an 18-month-old really still IS. He's such a little boy in so many other ways now, but I love that he still snuggles and nurses, and Mummy milk still makes any hurt or tantrum melt away instantly, and when he's in an almost-asleep state, he actually still roots frantically for the nipple, with his eyes closed and mouth wiiiide open like a baby bird! Just like he did when he was a newborn baby :) I love that. He's such a sweet baby boy to me still.

Anyway. Here we are snuggled on the sofa a few days ago, breastfeeding :) These two photos were taken like 2 seconds apart but I like them both so I can't pick one to post!

My shoulder blade is hurting me soooo much for some reason, and typing is making it worse. So I think I will stop for now. I'll finish with some more photos of Arthur sitting in his activity ring - he really likes it in there! He was being sooooo smiley that morning. Neil took him out while I lay in and they went on a big red double-decker BUS! Arthur has been so highly excited about buses for weeks now, to the point where I finally bought him a toy bus, which he plays with constantly, pushing it around the carpet on all fours and exclaiming "Buh!" :) Anyway so Neil took him for a short ride on the bus and they came back on another one too! Arthur tells me what he has seen now when they come in from a walk, it's so sweet! He comes in all excited and smiling and scrunching his shoulders right up to his ears with glee when he sees me. I greet him with hugs and kisses and ask him if he had a good walk with Daddy. I ask him what he saw, and he tells me "Buh!" I say, "Did you see a bus?!" and he smiles soooo big and says again, "Buh!" Then he pauses and says, "Brummm!" which is what he says for car, so I ask him if he saw cars and he beams and says "Brummmm!" again :) Then he might say, "Woah-woah!" which is his noise for a dog, and so I'll ask him if he saw a doggie, and so on. He loves to "tell" me all about what he saw on his walk - he LOVES his walks. He gets so excited about everything he sees that sometimes he just has to stop walking and stare at the exciting thing, clenching his fists till they SHAKE, he's that excited, bless him!

Anyway, that morning he had been on a bus for the first time, and when he came in he seemed soooo excited about something. He kept saying over and over, "Buh! Buh! Buh!" and so I asked him if he saw one. Neil said they had been ON a bus, and when I asked Arthur if he rode on a bus, he took in this huge squeally breath and shouted, "BUH!" :) He was soooo excited! He did not stop smiling all morning, I kid you not! Here he is beaming and beaming at us from his activity ring about an hour later - halfway through taking his socks off, which he always finds amusing for some reason!

This one is my favourite, and I think I'm going to use it in all my online forum signatures :) My sweet smiley little man! I love him so much. I love him SO much....

Lovely boy :) New toy unit, and words!

Still here! 17 days till my due date, and we seem to be nesting in this household at a frantic pace these days, all three of us! I reached full term 4 days ago so now it's just a waiting game for my homebirth :)

It's Sunday evening, so the end of another productive weekend getting things ready for having another baby! Last weekend we got quite a lot done. I finally built the toy storage unit that I wanted to make for Arthur. I didn't like the things I saw online or in the shops - well, I liked PARTS of them but they didn't meet all our needs overall, so in the end I just drew what I thought would be ideal for Arthur's toy storage but with minimum size because we have a teeny house, and ended up ITCHING to build it! We finally got all the right bits of wood and screws and stuff that I figured we'd need, and I varnished the cut wood and then built it! Yay! I'm so pleased with how it turned out, even though it's kind of bigger than I meant it to be! But it holds all Arthur's toys really well in boxes that angle out (like I have seen in the shops and online) - which I wanted because then he can see all his toys and access them easily. There are three big boxes at the bottom for his huge amounts of wooden bricks, Duplo, and Mega Bloks. The next shelf up has five smaller boxes with Stickle Bricks, play food, balls of various sizes, and playdough cutters and tools in them. The next shelf is for boxes with lockable lids for all the art and crafts stuff I might want for him over the next year or so. There's enough space for paper, card, glue, scissors, glitter, playdough, paints, crafty bits, bubbles, you name it! I'm so pleased! Then the top shelf is open, and takes all of his books and a few videos that we just won at eBay. His jigsaws are in a craft box for now, but I'll move those eventually.

Anyway - yay! We had to move the living room furniture around again to get it in the best place for it to live, but it has worked out really well and we are happier with our living room layout than we've ever been I think! It feels like a living room at last, but with a play area under the stairs, sort of. And the BabyDan playpen thingy is working wonderfully around the stairs. It even looks like it is meant to be there, which we're pleased with! Best of all, the room feels so much bigger and more organised with the space, ready for the homebirth. Arthur still has various stand-up toys around the room and a big basket full of soft toys and stacking things, and stuff that Matthew will be interested in pretty quickly, but that all stands in the play area anyway so that's fine.

Okay, here are some photos of Arthur playing with the new toy unit and stairgate thingy, just so you can see what I am talking about! :)

He seems really pleased with his new toy storage thingy, and he was SO excited about the stairgate solution, I don't know why, hehe! While we were putting it up, he kept squealing with excitement and stamping up and down on the spot with high knees, and then running round and round it! Funny boy :)

I won a new pine dressing table on eBay (did I mention this last entry? I can't remember) to use as a new, SLIM (thus increasing the room size) computer desk, with lots of drawers for added storage solutions. It arrived yesterday and we are really pleased with it! We spent yesterday evening putting it together and now I am sitting at it to write this entry! The bedroom feels much bigger already and I've started putting things away in the drawers. Neil dismantled the HUGE computer desk we were using before, and put it in the loft. Our poor loft is groaning, but there's lots more to go in it yet!

I have done loads of sorting and putting away and stuff, and I have put 10 items on eBay too. I hope they sell - we could use the money! I have about fifty thousand things to sell on eBay, but I think it would drive me crazy to package and post more than 10 things at a time, if they all end up selling!

Yesterday I FINALLY made a rather basic wooden latch for the cupboard on the landing. It's been bugging me for years, the door not shutting. And even more so since Arthur has been around and mobile, as he gets things out of it and chucks them down the stairs all the time! So I'm thrilled that I finally got that done! The next thing on our list is to build shelves up the wall in the spare bedroom to hold all my nappy fabrics (I have seriously LOADS!), then dismantle the free-standing shelving unit that currently holds them, and put it in the groaning loft. That will free up floor space in the bedroom for a potential space to put a crib or travel cot if we end up not co-sleeping, or only co-sleeping part time or something. We still don't really know what our plan is with sleep for our little family, after Matthew is here. I think we'll end up just feeling our way and seeing what works. We are just soooo nervous of setting up another 18 months of exhaustion and desperate frustration over constant night wakings and sleep deprivation! Arthur still wakes at night a couple of times, though he can sleep through sometimes. I never go in, except during the evenings. When I go in during the evenings now, I breastfeed Arthur to sleep again, which I wasn't doing for a while. But it works and he's happiest that way, and it's easy. In the night, I don't go in, and he settles pretty quickly (most nights) with Neil just giving him a little pat and a cuddle.

I was right about Arthur's speech taking off! He says several new words every day, and is eager to pick new ones up and use them repeatedly. He learns them instantly, with the first time we tell him what something is called and have him say it back to us. He knows the name of that item from that moment on and says the word every time he finds that object after that. Most of the words he says aren't clear and "as we would say them" yet though. But they are definitely attempts at the correct pronounciation, and some of his words are unmistakable now, even to outsiders. I sat and made a list of all the words I could think of that he says now, and there were almost 50 of them!!!! Just in a couple of weeks! Wow. He seemed to just suddenly get interested and decide to start learning words and using them.

Here's a list of the words he says - I probably won't list any more after this though, because it will be too long and I'll forget which ones are new, etc! Anyway, here's Arthur's current vocabulary (I wrote his pronounciations in brackets, unless he says them as we do), at 18 months, 1.5 weeks old :)

And lastly, my favourite as he says it with such pride and enthusiasm, bless him!... Willy (ee-YEH!)

Today's new words were trousers, jumper, cupboard, and hammer, which he has used with great delight ALL day long! He also makes animal sounds for 15 animals that I can think of off the top of my head, and makes sounds for a few objects to communicate them to us instead of using the actual words. For car, he says "Brummm!" to tell us he sees or hears a car, and also says an odd version of "beep beep" - he pronounces it "mah-mah" for some reason! He says "eee-yooo!" for motorbike, sort of like the "nee-YOWWW!" sound that I make for them! If he sees a picture of a star he does the actions to twinkle twinkle little star and makes sing-song sounds, to tell us he sees a star. If he wants a cuddle he says "ahhhh", swiftly followed (or accompanied) by a big hug with his arms all around me and his little hands patting :) If he wants to watch his new Teletubbies video (his favourite thing EVER, it seems, urgh!), he says "uh-oh" (they say "eh-oh" a lot on the Teletubbies) and signs please! He asks for it 4-5 times a DAY at the moment! Obviously he doesn't get to watch it every time he wants to, and gets kind of annoyed about it when I say no, but there is no way he is watching Teletubbies videos all day long! He does LOVE it though, and smiles and smiles and sits really still the whole time he's watching it.

He only uses a few signs, because we have been so slack in teaching them to him. But he regularly uses "milk" (about fifty million times a day at the moment - he seems to be breastfeeding about half the time he's awake, or at least it feels that way to me!), "please", "medicine", "all gone" and "I hear...", and he blows kisses and waves :)

Ahhh I love him so much! He is just full of cuteness all the time :) Although, increasingly mischievous, which can be difficult now that I'm about as mobile and energetic as a large tree.

He is ever the helper, and does a lot of really helpful things spontaneously, which I keep finding him doing! I have no idea where he gets his love of organising and tidying from! I find him sorting the laundry out of the tumble dryer on his own these days, though he does prefer me to do it with him, and often leads me to the tumble dryer (or dishwasher, more frequently - that's his favourite activity in the world!) by the hand - very sweet! He is usually to be found sitting in front of the tumble dryer with little piles around him, which he is actually sorting into nappy wipes, nappies, and nappy inserts! And he now makes seperate piles for Mummy's clothes, Daddy's clothes, and Arthur's clothes!!! He amazes me! It's one of those weird things that makes my eyes fill up when he has gone to bed and is sleeping peacefully like a little baby, and then I go into the kitchen and see his "grown up boy" lopsided piles of laundry, carefully sorted into categories. I don't know why it makes my heart squeeze, it's just one of those things that does :) He's just so precious. I love seeing little things that are "his" around the house after he's down for the night.

The other day I had some things out for sorting and packing my hospital bag (in case I need a transfer during my homebirth, like last time), and I stopped doing that for a while and did something in the kitchen. And when I came back into the living room, Arthur had taken all the tiny newborn nappies out of the bag they were being stored in, and was sorting Matthew's nappies and folding them and making them into neat piles! It was so sweet, as he was so absorbed in his task. He didn't even look up when I took a few photos :)

He also puts things in the kitchen bin when he has finished with them. Like snack wrappers. I give him a cereal bar, he says thank you really sweetly, and today he climbed up on the sofa with his drink in one hand and the cereal bar in the other, and put a cushion on his lap to lay them on! He got nice and comfy and ate his snack there, and when he had finished the cereal bar, he picked up every crumb and ate them one by one, and then climbed down from the sofa, walked into the kitchen, and put the wrapper in the bin! He puts everything that is rubbish in the bin - somehow he knows what is and what isn't! He loves to tidy his toys away into boxes and to make the books tidy. He gets really cross and frustrated if he can't get the books in line properly or the right way up!

On Thursday, my friend Katie came round with her little boy, Joshua. He is nearly 2, and Katie is due to have her new baby girl the day (or two?) after I am due! So it's lovely to get together with her, as we have SO much in common and are at the exact same stage of pregnancy and family life. Joshua seems at the same stages with everything that Arthur is, though he's a few months older. He has more words that he can say though, and scares more easily at things, but otherwise they are very similar, so it's nice to have Katie and Josh round! Josh loved Arthur's toy unit and went straight over there to play. Arthur watched him from his shy-with-new-people position backed up against the stairgate. He goes there but just watches, he doesn't seem anxious or anything. He likes to just SEE what's what with new people before he gets stuck in. He watched Josh for about 5 or 10 minutes, and then moved onto stage 2 of the Arthur-and-new-people protocol, which involves choosing toy after toy after toy and offering them to the new person with much urgency! He chose lots of toys to share - he's such a sweetie :) After about 5 minutes of that, he got stuck in and played WITH Josh, the first time I've ever really seen him play WITH another child, rather than alongside. They played with Duplo and then Arthur showed Josh his garage and cars. He got rather enthusiastic to the point where he was actually completely in Joshua's way, playing with it so eagerly, hehe! The sweetest thing was, the things he was most eager to show Josh were the kitchen appliances! Obviously, since they're Arthur's favourite things ever! ;)

It was so sweet. He took Josh in the kitchen and I could hear him making his eager "showing" sounds, the ones he makes when he's pointing at something and desperate to communicate what it is to someone. Then I heard clicking sounds and peeped round the door to see them both in front of the washing machine, and Arthur showing Josh how to press the buttons and turn the dial, hehe! A bit later, they were both in front of the tumble dryer, Arthur again pressing buttons with much "explaining" vocal sounds and turning the dial. They even set it off on a 30-minute warm cycle with nothing in it! Joshua watched but looked either unimpressed or vaguely anxious! I wondered whether he's probably not allowed to touch the appliances at home - oops! It was just SO sweet to see Arthur so eager to show his friend how to work the kitchen appliances!

After that, Arthur tried to give Josh a big hug from behind, but he stopped suddenly when I asked him what he was doing - I wish I hadn't! He didn't even know I was watching so I must have startled him. He never wrestles people or anything so I know he could only have been hugging :) A few minutes later he was standing with Josh and they were looking at his books and Arthur leaned right in to kiss Joshua, but then Katie and I both exclaimed at how sweet it was, and he lost his nerve, bless him! I gave them both a digestive biscuit (yum!) and Josh didn't want his straight away. Arthur LOVES them and could eat as many as he's given! He wanted mine as soon as he'd finished his, but I said no more. A few minutes later he saw Josh's uneaten biscuit and picked it up all eager. I spotted him and told him, "That's Joshie's biscuit - can you give it to Joshie?" and he DID! Even though he would normally just want to eat it (and I could see he did want to), he heard what I said and walked right over to Josh, and handed him to biscuit! He's just such a friendly affectionate child. I am so lucky to be his mummy :)

What else have we been doing lately? We made a tiring trip into town for a few bits of shopping on Friday. I got Arthur fitted for a pair of summer sandals, for if we ever get any warm sunny weather! We went on a rainy day so there were no other people in there buying summer sandals! The shop assistant said we picked a good day for it, as they have been really busy fitting kids for summer shoes until the rain started a few days ago. Arthur got a pair of Startrite sandals in navy/beige, so that they'll go with pretty much everything that he owns that is summery. They fit him great - they're a size 4.5, although he does still fit a 4 in normal shoes, his feet haven't grown since his last fitting. The lady said they'll last him the whole summer, which is great. He looks so sweet in them, and I'm glad to have something he can wear with his shorts and stuff, when it's warm, instead of hot shoes and socks.

I am LOVING this rain!!! :) It feels like forever since we had some GOOD rain, the heavy kind that seems to last most of the day, on and off, and several days running. Boy do we need rain like this. I have really been noticing this year that it doesn't rain like it used to when I was little. Heavy pouring rain used to be such a normal thing to trudge through on the way to school, and these days it feels like an unusual thing to see - parents having to hurry their children to school, huddled under raincoats and umbrellas. It happens SO much less frequently than it used to. I have always loved the rain, and I especially like being out in it. I love being inside and cosy when it's raining heavily, and I adore the sound of rain on the roof and windows - the heavier the better! But most of all I like the fresh damp smell and the cool moisture in the air as I breathe the smell deeply. And I love the sound of it on my rainhood or umbrella as I walk along. I love the squish squish sound of my feet on wet pavements, and I just like the fresh feel against my skin as drops hit my face. I used to be one of those kids who was always trying to catch raindrops in her mouth :) BEST of all, I love silly walks in the rain, which I am apparently too grown-up to take anymore :( I love wearing no waterproofs or hoods or umbrellas, and just STANDING out in torrential rain and getting soaked! I love having rain drip off the ends of my hair, because I have gotten that wet, and I love the chill of soaked clothes against my skin, and the exhilaration of how crazy it is to be out in a rain storm! I miss doing that. The last time I did it I was still in my 20s though :)

I just LOVE the rain! :) If I wasn't so huge and ungainly then I would take Arthur out for more walks in the rain. I haven't taken him out walking much recently as I am just so tired out and it hurts my pelvis to walk much at all now. We go places in the car, like shopping and stuff, because we need to get things, but I have to walk REALLY slow and it's so tiring. My bump is grazing the steering wheel now so I don't know if I'll be able to drive right up to my due date. But anyway, I did take Arthur out for some rainy walks when we last had some rain, though it wasn't as heavy and persistant as this rain is. I just put his little raincoat on him and off we went! He didn't seem to mind it at all, and we just got changed and dry when we got home :) I hope he'll love the rain as much as I do! He certainly seems to hate the hot weather as much as I do, so maybe he will.

Neil took Arthur to the park again yesterday. He let him run and run over some bumpy grass which had lots of clumpy tufts here and there. He said he felt like Arthur would trip on those tufts but Arthur was straining to get away from holding Neil's hand, so he let him go. Neil said he managed well and seemed to enjoy his running. He stumbled a few times over tufts of grass but only fell once. I wish I had been there! The grass was so soft that he didn't hurt himself, but it sounded so sweet! Neil said he was far enough ahead of him so that it took him a few seconds to reach him when he fell, and Arthur tumbled face down into a big clump of grass! He just stayed perfectly still, bottom in the air and face in the grass, hehe! When Neil reached him, he stood Arthur upright and his face was all dewy from the grass, so he wiped him. He wasn't upset at all, but he looked bemused at having a wet face! As soon as his face was all dry, he looked at Neil and said, "Ome" hehehe! So Neil brought him home ;) Sweet boy.

Okay it's getting late already so I think I will finish here. I can't believe another weekend has disappeared already! Only two left now before my due date. I would REALLY like to have Matthew on that second weekend just before my due date - if I could pick a date it would be that weekend! I have a baby shower for me and three other girls at church who are having babies, on the Saturday, so I would love to attend my baby shower and then give birth later that day, hehe! Ah well, I can hope :)

Neil took a couple of photos today of Arthur snuggling with me to watch his Teletubbies video before bathtime this evening. He likes to snuggle with me on the sofa before bathtime and watch something soothing, like the CBeebies bedtime hour or, lately, his favourite video. It's not for long, and he likes to breastfeed for that whole time. I love it because it gives me a time-out in a way, with my feet up, where I'm not chasing him around. I'm usually tired out by that time of day, especially when Neil has been at work. Neil was upstairs running Arthur's bath and when he came down he took a photo of Arthur breastfeeding. I like it because it captures a sweet part of Arthur's routine that will undoubtedly disappear in too short a time and become a memory of something he did when he was very little, and also it is a rare photo of Arthur and me together with the obvious presence of a bumpy baby brother! I want more photos of us before Matthew is born, more breastfeeding ones and snuggle-time and stuff. It's a precious time with my one-and-only little boy which is all about to end for good in just a couple of weeks. I am looking forward to it, but I am sad to lose that only-child time with Arthur, so I want photo memories!

Anyway, here we are - urgh, the place is still such a mess, but oooh that Xerox box on the little table is my homebirth pack that the midwife brought last week, yay! Arthur is actually on the breast, even though it looks like an awkward angle, it's one of the easiest to nurse him in now. Then there's a photo of us a few minutes later, right after I had to stop feeding him for a moment (big Braxton Hicks contraction!) and was just watching him watch the telly and thinking how wonderful he is :)

My little boy is 18 months old!!!

Wow, I can't believe Arthur has reached that big "18 months" milestone! He is a year and a half old. This time one year ago, he was just starting to try his first solids (which he did NOT appreciate!), and I would never have believed you if you had told me that in one year we would be twenty-something days away from having another baby boy!

Babycentre tells me that many see this age as the stage where babyhood ends. They say that potty training can start from 18 months and stuff. I don't know. I know I'm literally about to have another baby, but Arthur is still my baby! He is still soooo little, in so many ways. I guess before I had children I considered 18 months to be "little boy" (or girl!) age rather than thinking of the word "baby", but I think only because of things like hair on their heads, walking, some speech, feeding themselves, etc. Maybe those things ARE the difference between a baby and a toddler/child?

Arthur is showing lots of the signs of readiness for potty training, but I don't really want to encourage him yet. I am in NO hurry to see him move out of nappies! I love using cloth nappies and I will honestly be so sad the day he is potty trained for good! He tells us when he has done a poo, or if he is doing one. Or even sometimes he tells us when he is about to do one. He sometimes points to his nappy, and then says "poo poo" :) If he has done one, he tells us, "poo poo". One evening when he pointed to his nappy and said "poo poo", BEFORE he started trying to do one, we asked him if he wanted to try sitting on his potty. He didn't seem to mind the idea so we took his things off and sat him on it, but he was already mid-poo and then decided (within like 0.5 seconds!) that he didn't want to sit down on the potty any more, and got up. Much rinsing of the bathtub and cleaning of carpets ensued for Neil and I after Arthur was in bed that night, hehe! Also Arthur didn't seem happy about having made a poo-poo mess everywhere so I would say the whole thing was a complete disaster. But oh well. I don't think we'll try that again in a hurry.

He turned 18 months old 5 days ago, and literally since that time it's almost as though he has thought to himself, "Right, I'm 18 months old now! I think it's time to start speaking!" He is attempting all sorts of words all day long, every day, all of a sudden. He repeats everything we say, and tries all sorts of different sounds. He is so excited when he says a word that actually sounds like the word we asked him to say, that he'll then say it 50 million times, over and over and over for the rest of the day! Poo-poo is one of these ;) He also says "Boo", leaping out from behind a doorway or something, as though he is trying to scare us! Of course we react like he shocked the living daylights out of us and he laughs soooo much till his eyes are all sparkly, and then goes back and does it again and again :) Eventually he is enjoying our response so much that he doesn't bother hiding before saying "boo" - he just stands right there and shouts "BOO!" with a big beaming smile, waiting for us to be shocked and jump, hehe! Funny boy :)

He likes anything like that, anything loud that might make him jump. He says, "DAP!" (snap!) for sharp snapping sounds, and "GEH!" for the word "bang" (not sure why it comes out "geh" but there we go!). We hear those two words a LOT every day, as he slams the doors shut on his Duplo barn or bangs a toy car onto a hard surface for the sound effect. He LOVES hearing us say "BANG!" or "Snnn-AP!!" with accompanying enthusiasm - it makes him laugh till his eyes water and he repeats the words over and over to make us keep on saying them!

He seems really interested in trying to pronounce new sounds, whereas just a week ago he wasn't interested in that at all. He says, "knee", "ball" ("boah"), "bib" and a few other new words like that, and yesterday he got ultra excited at trying out two more complicated words - "pasta" and "drawer"!! He says pasta such a lot now. It sounds like "daf-dah", or even sometimes quite like "dada" but it does sound different to the "dada" he says for Neil. When he eats a meal with pasta in it, he literally picks out every single piece of pasta one by one (eating them one at a time), so that he can hold it out enthusiastically and declare, "Daf-dah!" (which we must immediately acknowledge or there is usually trouble!), before popping it into his mouth! He is soooo excited about the word "pasta", hehe!

When he gets up in the morning, I am always in the spare bedroom as that's the only place I can get sleep at the moment. If I hear him waking then I sometimes go in and breastfeed him before he gets up, but more and more often now he climbs out of bed and toddles down the hall and into the spare bedroom. I am usually woken by the sound of his sweet little footsteps getting nearer and nearer, till I open my eyes and see the smiliest boy EVER approaching my bed! He climbs right on with ease and lays down next to me to breastfeed :) He never nurses for long though, because he is really just touching base with me again after the night (which now does not involve me going in to resettle him at ALL from when I go to bed until when he gets up - Neil does that if he wakes, and he sometimes sleeps through, and other times he wakes a couple of times but settles pretty quickly with Neil patting him). He likes to keep popping off the breast to put his finger on my nose and have me say, "Mummy's nose!" and then my mouth, and each eye in turn, and my ear (he says, "eeear!") and then my hair "aair!"). Then he has a few more sucks, and then wants to sit up and point at things he can see in the room. Yesterday he pointed at one of the drawers in the chest of drawers by the bed, and I said, "Drawer!" He immediately made some odd-looking efforts with his mouth and said, "Rrrwrww!" or something! I could tell he was trying really hard to say drawer. This morning when he came in, he pointed straight at the drawer and said to me, "Rawer!" without any prompting from me! He seems to be suddenly trying new words a lot at the moment, so I think it's possible that his speech could come on pretty quickly now. I'm excited about it! I love hearing his teeny tiny chipmunky voice saying real words to tell us things that are on his mind or things that he sees and finds interesting.

He is saying, "Yep!" a lot, often as an obvious "yes" to things, but not every time. Today he had just finished his tea and was busy running out of the kitchen to play with his toys. I called to him and asked him if he wanted a mini rusk, and he stopped and shouted a gleeful, "YEP!", turned round and came back to me, where he plucked a mini rusk from the bag I was holding out to him, and gave me a big beaming smile before running off again to eat it with his toys :)

He makes lots of animal noises as he plays with any of his toys that involve animals, or reads books with animals in. Last night it was so sweet - I had just breastfed him to sleep and he was soooo tired from a busy day! Neil had taken him to the park that morning and when I say park, I do not want to give you the impression that our local park is flat and smallish and used for playing football or going on the swings. Nooo, ours is this gorgeous huge place! It's one of London's Royal Parks and it's unfathomably huge - miles, you could never walk it, honestly - and is hilly and has woods and plantations of beautiful flowers, and hundreds of wild deer. So Neil took Arthur to a hilly bit, and he said Arthur had such a great time! He was so determined to do the groundwork all by himself apparently! I wish I had been there with them to see it. He stumbled all the way down a steep slope, and only tripped once over a thick tuft of grass, even though the steepness was making him run when he didn't mean to run sometimes! He also insisted on climbing all the way back up by himself. Neil said he put so much effort into climbing the steepest parts, and he made it all by himself! He got tired sometimes but Neil said he would just walk ALONG the slope for a little way before starting up it again, as though to take a break from the uphill work for a while. So we weren't surprised when he fell asleep almost instantly that evening! He did have a nap in the day but it was just an hour, like he tends to take, no more.

Anyway, he was soooooo sleepy when he was going to sleep. I took him off the breast when I could tell he was asleep, and he rolled onto his back, opened his mouth and made... chicken sounds, hehehe! He just lay there, completely asleep, saying, "Bup-bup-bup" (the sound I make for a chicken, well, mine is more like, "buck-buck-buck" but Arthur's comes out more like "bup-bup-bup"). Neil and I had SUCH trouble keeping our laughter silent so as not to wake him! When he finished making chicken sounds, he raised his arms in the air and made milk signs with both fists, and then rolled towards me again and slept on! We both said how we WISH we could have known what was going through his little mind at that time! So sweet :)

Another sweet thing was one night when he woke during the evening all upset, and I went in to lay with him and cuddle him on his bed. Neil came in to help settle him, but Arthur seemed upset about something and wouldn't settle. He would snuggle up to me, then pull back, look up at my face and point to it, as though trying to tell me something, then make agitated sounds and eventually get upset. Then he would try snuggling and sleeping again for a few seconds, and repeat the whole process. Eventually I wondered if he was pointing at my glasses. So I said, "Do you want Mummy to take her glasses off?" and he gave a relieved smile and gave an affirmative, "Mmmm!" sound! So I took them off, and he snuggled right up and went to sleep straight away! Neil and I chuckled to each other silently while Arthur dozed off, until we were both wiping our eyes. It just seemed to tickle us so much that Arthur is so specific about what he wants, and in this particular situation, he wanted Mummy to lay with him, but it wasn't kosher snuggling unless Mummy took her glasses off! It's like he has got wise to the fact that I'm not really resting or planning to stay long when I am in bed wearing my glasses, so he doesn't like it if he wants me to snuggle with him and I am wearing my glasses! Funny boy :) This is his character through and through - he has always been very specific about what he wants and everything has to be "just so" for him to be settled with things! Neil and I find it so sweet and amusing :)

Arthur's hair is growing long AGAIN. I'm sure it has only been a month - maybe not even that! - since I took him to have it cut! It curls at the back. I love that :)

We are just soooo crazily busy getting ready for having a new little baby boy! Every spare moment is taken up doing stuff to prepare, or writing lists of how to "do stuff" to prepare! I am packing my labour bag and stuff, and frantically buying last minute things on eBay (fun!). I am getting myself plenty of clothes in size 14, as I was a pre-pregnant size 10 and then pretty much stayed as a small size 12 after having Arthur. I have gained about 40lbs so far this pregnancy (I gained 54lbs with Arthur in total) and I know I will be a size 14 when I go back into non-maternity clothes, just like I was after Arthur at first. When Arthur was born, I hung around in baggy maternity clothes for a while, convinced that I would lose weight in no time at all, but when it didn't fall off immediately I realised I would have to go out and buy some basics to wear that weren't maternity clothes! My bump had disappeared by then but I just remained the same size in the bum, thighs and milk-filled bust, and didn't fit into anything I owned from before my pregnancy. Again, I figured it would just be reeeally temporary, so I went to Tesco and bought some very cheap jeans and jogging bottoms to slouch around in. They weren't comfy and didn't fit my shape well, but they went over my bulk (!!) and that's what mattered at the time. I can't remember when I finally slimmed down to a size 12, but it took a while for breastfeeding to really kick off some of my weight. Once it started, it came off fast though. But I was in those uncomfy, ill-fitting clothes for longer than I had expected.

So this time, I decided I would go to eBay and buy second-hand clothes that would save me lots of money and still be really nice, well-fitting clothes - a decent wardrobe of things to wear for as long as it takes post-baby for breastfeeding to start burning off my pregnancy weight. I don't care how long it takes, but I have a feeling it might not be as long as last time, given that I'll be tandem nursing this time. But anyway. I will be having more babies after this one, and so I know I'll want a selection of nice clothes for the immediate postnatal period! I was dreading wearing the cheap stuff I bought last time, and none of it was suitable for hot weather anyway.

So it has been so much FUN to shop on eBay and build up a little collection of basic comfy clothes! I have some lovely cropped jeans and shorts, and a couple of pairs of Next jeans and stuff too. I have also been bidding on some wrap-over style tops because those have got to be easy to breastfeed in, and I need ease even more than last time now that I'll be breastfeeding two at the same time, sometimes. Ideally I would LOVE to buy a ton of actual breastfeeding tops, but they are SO expensive. I have found a few on eBay and bought two white sleeveless breastfeeding tops, one green one and a grey one too. So I have cool tops that are made for breastfeeding - yay! I also won a couple of long-sleeved breastfeeding tops. I wonder if I could sew my own and save money? Hmmm, maybe I will look at them when I get them in the post and see.... but then I have such a HUGE list of things still to sew, and probably not enough time left to sew them in, so maybe not! Other than those tops, I have won a few nice tops that should be easy to breastfeed in, so I'm happy with that.

I built that toy storage unit that was bugging me!!! Yay! Neil helped me, but if he helped too much then we got into arguments about how to do it, and eventually I did much better just getting on with it by myself. I varnished the wood outside (minimising the fumes) and then sanded it and measured and drilled and fixed the parts together with brackets and screws like my scribbly design said. And it seems to work! It's much bigger than I thought it would be, but it holds all the clear plastic boxes that I had bought for it, with nearly all of Arthur's toys in it! I underestimated the number of screws I needed, so we still have to fit the top shelf that will hold his books. I'm going to buy the screws tomorrow after we go to the supermarket, after we take Neil to work! Soooo busy at the moment!

I am tired all the time, and achy and stuff. It hurts to move about. I am just so pregnant now! I can't believe there are only 3 weeks left till my due date, just over, and we really are about to have another baby!

Today we moved all the living room furniture around, and put the armchair under the kitchen table (sounds weird but it's what we had to do last time to make room in the living room for the homebirth!). We fitted the new BabyDan thingy around the bottom of the stairs. It needs proper wall fixings and I have to order them from BabyDan, which we were mighty annoyed to only find out about when we opened the box to fit the thing to the wall! But it is very secure locked behind the radiator on one side and with two panels pinned to the wall behind a sofa on the other. Sounds crap, but trust me, it's very steady and functions safely! We will fix it properly though, when the fittings arrive. So Arthur can no longer get up the stairs, yaaaaaay! I'm SO relieved to have that sorted!

I can't think what else I was going to say.... we have decided to delay Arthur's MMR yet again, until Matthew's first Hibb booster, which will be in August I think. Then I think I'll get them both done at the same appt. It should be a good time of year for Arthur NOT to be dealing with billions of viruses, and he will hopefully have a window of no teething there too (he is teething again today and yesterday - we even had to give him Calpol tonight, poor love). Plus he will be getting lots of breastmilk by then to help his lil immune system. And he'll be that older, again to give his immune system a bit of a better chance. So that's what we'll do. I got a letter from the doctor's surgery last week, saying they have noticed from Arthur's records that he hasn't had the MMR and they want me to inform them if I've decided not to have him vaccinated, or otherwise make an appt. I have been ignoring letters about the MMR so far, but I think I will reply in writing to say I AM planning to get him vaccinated, but when I am ready, and not before. I think I will tell them that I plan to have him vaccinated when my new baby has his Hibb booster, which should placate them I think. Anyway. I am so nervous about that MMR. Like I am nervous about peanuts. When he has had his MMR and is fine, and then peanuts and hasn't swelled up and stopped breathing, then I'll breathe easy, hehe! Well, that is until it's Matthew's turn. *sigh*

Okay it's getting late and I need to go to bed. I'll try to update again soon! I can't believe I haven't taken any photos since last entry! When I finish the toy storage unit I will be sure to get a photo of Arthur with it - he LOVES it! Neil said it was like watching him on Christmas morning when he came downstairs this morning to see it standing there in all its glory with all his toys displayed on it! He has wanted to "organise" the toys in the boxes on it all day today. So I'm sure there will be photos of Arthur doing that soon!

Thank you for the messages and notes lately - yet again I am so crap at communications at the moment, I just seem too busy or too tired all the time. I am reading diaries but not every time they're updated, and not really having time to sign guestbooks like I wish I could. Yesterday evening I finally got TWO emails written that had been many months overdue! So hopefully I will get organised on stuff like that before Matthew is here, otherwise I fear I will never email again or something, heh. I can't imagine how much LESS time I'm going to have once my occupation is caring for TWO gorgeous little boys under the age of two!

Okay I need sleep. And water. And maybe chocolate.... but sleep! Oh but I changed my breastfeeding milestone blinkie to 18 months :) I'm always so proud to add a new blinkie each month! I love breastfeeding! I'm not sure what I'll do with blinkies when I have two little persons' breastfeeding milestones to count, hmmm. Oh my gosh, I just realised that this latest monthiversary of Arthur's is possibly going to be the LAST one before I have another baby in my arms!!! Matthew is due 2 days before Arthur turns 19 months. I wonder if he'll be here when I am writing here to say Arthur is 19 months old? What a crazy thought!! Soooo close now. It's kind of scary, but exciting all at the same time. I will update when I can here, as usual, but all my news of labour starting and Matthew's arrival will be in my pregnancy diary, also up there in my links on the left hand side. When I went into labour with Arthur, I was able to write a couple of entries during my labour and I hope to do the same again since I'll be at home. So you won't see updates here during that time, but I'll be sure to update there when I can!

Yeeeep! I'm going to have a baby! :D

Hormonal wibbling, dentist, and projects!

Oh my bob, it has been way too long since I wrote an entry! I never mean it to be a week or more between entries but somehow it keeps happening!

Did you know? Tomorrow is the 7th of May, so I only have one month left until my due date. Life has recently turned into a whirlwind of lists ("to-do", "sorting", "packing", "shopping", etc), Braxton Hicks (and other assorted pregnancy niggles) and a toddler who is DEFINITELY on the ball about The Big Change around the corner. The lists and preparations and stuff are becoming more and more frenzied, and today I had my first major hormonal sobbing meltdown about how there is toooo much to do and just NO time left to do it! Plus I am just so exhausted, physically more than anything else, and so HUGE and uncomfortable, and increasingly unable to cope with little irritants - which often come in the form of Arthur being more and more demanding and clingy these days. Urgh.

Neil is wonderful and supportive as always, but he is tired and snappy too - it's a big psychological upheaval for both Mummy AND Daddy when there's a new baby about to arrive! - and he is totally snowed under at work at the moment. He has to bring the laptop home and work in the evenings sometimes, and still doesn't get done what he needs to. Poor Neil. He still does a lot with Arthur - currently settling him in the night in the hope that Arthur will stop his night waking, or at least learn to settle more quickly that way, and also he still gets up with Arthur at around 6am so I can sleep till 8am. He is wonderful. I annoy myself enormously because I somehow still manage to find Neil irritating and find fault with him all the time! Yuck. I could blame hormones but maybe I'm just being plain unreasonable. I feel so cross with myself that I don't feel "nicer" towards Neil sometimes, because I feel defensive of him too, that he isn't blessed with an easy-going wife!

Neil is doing okay over his father's death. He says he sometimes feels like he thinks more about his dad in recent days and weeks than he did around the funeral time. I hope he is okay on the inside. It's hard to find Neil's inside, as he is stubborn about sharing it when it comes to emotional stuff. He does tell me about things he thinks about though, and that gives me a clue, and then I will ask him how it makes him feel, etc. He isn't that good at knowing how he feels about stuff though. Lately I worry that I'm neglecting him on that front, since everything is just... I don't know... "too much" for me to contain in my tired body and head, and I don't seem to get past my own needs to focus on anyone else's. Urgh, I hate even saying that, it sounds so horribly selfish. But it's true. I feel sometimes like I'm hanging on by a thread with how sleep deprived or physically exhausted or toddlered-out or desperate for someone to focus on ME I am.

But anyway. We'll be fine! It's just a difficult stage of life at the moment, that's all. We have a demanding toddler, a baby due in a few weeks, and happen to be stretched to the max in a few stressy "life" areas like work and family and stuff. So we're sure to be feeling like we're only just hanging in there, but this too shall pass. Neil says, "out of the frying pan and into the fire"! Which I think will be true to some extent when Matthew is born, as life with all those things PLUS a newborn will be.... I don't even know a word for it! I hope we survive! ;) Sometimes I really mean that. I hope we get through it okay. But if we do then it will all be wonderful in the end, and the difficult patches will pass, so I know it will be okay. Plus God is with us. I forget that sooooo easily these days. *sigh*

Somebody's foot is sticking right out of my side :)

Arthur's climbing antics have rapidly gone from cute to not-so-funny-any-more! He won't listen when I tell him not to, even if he's in danger and I'm trying to use a "DANGER" voice! He just thinks that's extra funny, urgh. He is really into practising balancing at the moment. He climbs onto small things, whether they are far off the floor or not, and sticks his arms out on either side and does "balancing" for fun. He balances on a piece of paper on the carpet, bless him! Or on a plank of wood, or basically anything. Tubs full of bricks (either on the empty tub or the unstable mountain of bricks inside it! The arm of the armchair or sofa - that one is my LEAST favourite. He climbs onto the sofa and then onto the arm, and gets himself upright on his feet (using the method illustrated in my last entry!), and then balances on it for as long as he can, shrieking and yelling with joy and pride the whole time! Soft or uneven surfaces are tempting him more than stable ones these days, as they pose more of a challenge or something. He is also starting to try STEPPING off the edge of the sofa onto the floor (waaaaaaay too large a step!) instead of sitting down first, almost as if to see what might happen. What does happen is that he falls down pretty hard, but he unless he hurts himself badly, he makes this expression like, "Hmmm, that was interesting and intriguing..." and immediately climbs up to try it again! This boy has no fear. Except when it comes to the hoover, and then he's terrified and cries and cries. Even when I tell him Daddy is going to hoover the carpet later, he starts to cry! He isn't crazy about the hair dryer either, but other than that, he has no fear of anything!

The main worry about Arthur's climbing right now is that he has finally bypassed our pathetic attempt to block the stairs off. We have no bannisters on our stairs and there is no post at the bottom to which we might fit a stair gate. So we have been wedging a large suitcase in the annoyingly-too-small gap between the armchair and the bottom step of the stairs, and he can't physically move it out of the way, and it's too tall for him to get over. And too well wedged for him to get round it. So it has worked well! But now he has started climbing on the armchair and onto the arm, it's a completely different story.

Two days ago I was upstairs doing something or other for a couple of minutes - probably one of my many wees that I have to keep doing these days! But literally like 60 seconds or maybe double that at most. Arthur was playing with bricks in the living room. I was washing my hands and I heard thump-thump-thump on the stairs, and when I looked down, he was climbing them! The suitcase was still wedged and I couldn't think how he had managed to get around it. So I took him back down and told him he must not climb the stairs without Mummy or Daddy with him, and went back up and waited just out of sight at the top. I peeked round and saw him go straight to the armchair, climb up on the arm, and with absolute EASE, swing himself over the suitcase (which stands a foot higher than the arm at least and has a big drop down to the stairs on the other side!!!), and start climbing the stairs again! Monkey boy! He didn't have to make any effort sounds or anything, and he was very quick. So I wedged his activity ring between the suitcase and the stairs, somehow, which made an even taller obstacle for him to climb over, just to try and deter him for the rest of that day. It made nooo difference at all! He just climbed over the lot and started up the stairs! When I told Neil that evening, we decided we would have to do something about it at the weekend.

Yesterday he was even more bold about it though, and it got me so worried at times! I changed his nappy in the living room and went into the kitchen to wash my hands. How long does it take to wash hands?! All of about 20 seconds or something. I had left Arthur lying on the floor, seemingly happy to entertain himself with some Duplo that was lying about on the carpet. As I switched the water off (literally 20 or 30 seconds later), I heard the floorboards ABOVE MY HEAD juddering and clunking like someone was up there running about! Which, of course, was the case. How on earth is that even possible, for ANYONE to climb over all that stuff AND get up the stairs in 30 seconds, let alone a small toddler?! I rushed up and there he was, absolutely zinging with excitement over his achievement, running up and down the landing with the shiniest eyes and the most enormous smile I ever saw! That one scared me because what if he had decided to come back down again? He can't climb downstairs, he doesn't appear to understand the process at all! He just launches himself off each step and doesn't appear to have any idea of the consequences, were Neil or I not there to catch him! So he would most definitely have a horrible fall if he tried to come back downstairs.

Later in the day we were going for a short walk, and I needed my summer shoes (it got hot this week, all of a sudden, right on the back of about 8 months of winter!) so I gallumphed upstairs in a very undignified manner (the quickest way I could get up them in my condition!) to rummage in the wardrobe and find the shoes, leaving Arthur wearing his shoes and all ready to go out, busily fiddling with things in the porch. I was wedged between piles of stuff that should have gone into the loft AGES ago, and the wardrobe, when Arthur appeared noiselessly at the top of the stairs!! Yikes! He came into the bedroom all smiley to see what I was doing, and after a quick 0.23 second glance, he turned around and headed back towards the stairs!! I was absolutely stuck and couldn't get myself out fast enough to grab him. I felt in such a panic! I just yelled at Arthur like a fishwife (I'm ashamed to say!) to stop and wait for Mummy, and basically threw every word at him that he might associate with stopping if he heard it, while I scrambled to get out of the piles of stuff around me. Thankfully Arthur DID stop, but only long enough for him to give me a very unsure look at the way I was yelling at him, and then start off again - by which time I was able to get to him. Urrrrrrgh that was so scary.

So today we have been trying to figure out what to do about the stairs. It can't wait even another day now. Today we watched as Arthur climbed the entire flight of stairs in under 10 seconds when he thought we couldn't see him, and it was SCARY how fast he was going. We NEVER see him climb that fast when he is with us, or knows we are there watching. Sometimes it drives me crazy how slow he goes actually!

We decided we had to bosh together some sort of post for the bottom of the stairs so we could attach the other stair gate we have to it. We will have to get rid of our armchair though :( It's part of a lovely 4 piece suite that Neil and I bought to celebrate our engagement (a crazy crazy whim that we would never do if we had our time again!), and there is nowhere in the house it can fit, so I think we'll have to get rid of it. I doubt it will sell on eBay, so I guess we'll give it to The Princess Alice Hospice. Then it's for a good cause and they collect furniture so it's less hassle for us to get rid of it. But we're sad to have to lose it, as we would definitely have space for it the next time we move house, and we'll be keeping the rest of the suite for yeeeears to come yet.

So this afternoon, when we had decided all that, we all went out to Homebase to buy the wood and fittings and stuff. But Homebase didn't have anything in the right dimensions. We wanted timber and stuff for a toy storage unit that is my latest crazy hormonally-influenced DIY project at the moment! I will not be held responsible for my actions if I can't get that unit built with my own two hands before Matthew arrives, hehe! I feel so crazily strongly about it - it has to be some weirdo form of nesting or something! Anyway, I have spent a lot of time this week researching and designing and measuring, and finally trudging out in way-too-hot-for-me temperatures with a similarly natured toddler (he seems soooo like me with hot weather, we both don't deal with it well at ALL!), and buying the containers that will hold the toys. And all that was left to do was buy the timber and fittings, have the timber cut to size, varnish it, and put it together! I am so excited about it. We are so over-run with toys in our living room at the moment - even Arthur thinks so, I reckon! See?...

That is just one corner of the room, and there are toys lining almost every wall in the room now! The other week I won him a massive lot of Duplo and a plastic chair which has a seat full of Mega Bloks (the one in which he was sitting, in the above photo). He loves Duplo and his little set of it seemed so small. He would put the five rectangular pieces together and then do the "all gone" sign and look all disappointed! Plus we need LOTS of building bricks and Duplo and stuff for two little boys who will be close enough in age to be interested in those things at the same time. So I bid on some on eBay, and won some incredibly cheaply! It doesn't even look used. Here is Arthur, about 30 seconds after we unpacked it when the postman brought it :)

He is soooooooo pleased with it! He has spent hours playing with it already. My brother and I had lots of Lego and Duplo when we were little, and I remember so fondly the times we played with it. I really want to complete the set for my boys with some Duplo people, animals, vehicles and maybe a couple of special pieces. And a couple of base boards. And then I will be very proud of their Duplo collection, hehe! Well, rather I'll feel happy that they have a great selection of Duplo to play with for years to come. So I just won an entire Duplo farm!!! I'm so excited for it to arrive in the post!! There are lots of animals, and fences and trees, and a tractor, plough, and trailer, and a big barn on a base board with a windmill :) *I* can't wait to play with it, hehe! I still want people and a couple of vehicles, and that will be it. I can NOT believe how cheap I have picked this stuff up on eBay. It is soooooo expensive in the shops, so I'm really pleased!

Arthur is now officially "into" playdough! We went to church last Sunday (gasp!) and Neil and I BOTH stayed with Arthur during creche. We just wanted to :) Oh, and I had a horrible headache so maybe that's why Neil stayed too? I can't remember. Anyway it went during the creche time and we ended up having lots of fun together as a family in creche :) There were only a few other little ones in there that morning, and Arthur spent ages playing with the train set that goes round all by itself, and then he looked interested in the playdough, so we sat him up to the table and he LOVED it!! He played with the playdough and, more specifically, the tools and bits that you can stick into the stuff, until the service was over! The last time I tried to interest him in playdough he looked bored and wanted to get down. He also didn't like to touch it, and acted like he had got his hands all dirty or something! But this time he loved it, yay!

He is very keen on crayoning now and asks to have his crayons (pointing at them with the increasingly annoying "uh-uh-uh-uh-UH!" sounds) several times a day. He still eats them, but he is learning not to. As I give them to him, I say, "Look at Mummy" so that he is holding eye contact with me while I tell him, "If you bite the crayons, Mummy will put them away. Okay?" and then he does some crayon-sorting and scribbling and he SNIFFS the crayons with one eye on me, but the instant he puts one between his teeth, I take it from him and put them all back in the box and they get put up out of reach again. I always tell him while I'm putting them away, "Mummy is putting the crayons away because you were biting a crayon. Remember Mummy told you not to do that?" He doesn't like that, so I think he is learning. But crayon time usually ends that way eventually.

He is generally getting more interested in craft-y things. He likes sticking stickers onto things and stuff. He can do all his lift-out jigsaws and it's time to get him some simple two or four-piece jigsaws I think. He loves jigsaw puzzles. He really enjoyed playing with a plastic farm set that belonged to a 2-year-old whose house we went to last week at Fellowship Group, so I know he is getting more interested in toys that we don't have yet. Some of his early toys are starting to frustrate him and he seems restless playing with them. Normally we'd be putting a load of outgrown stuff away by now and replacing it with stuff he's growing into, but Matthew is coming and he'll be into the very young toys before we can blink, so we can't really put them away, or not for long anyway. Soooo we are just swimming in toys! Hence the need for a serious storage solution! I looked and looked online but I couldn't find anything in our price range that would suit all our needs for storing everything, or be a small enough unit to fit in our over-cluttered house. So I ended up designing what I thought would be perfect for us right now, and I plan to build it asap. It's based on stuff I have seen online, the shelving-type-thing with plastic storage boxes that are angled outwards a little for easy access to the toys inside. We'll have enough of those in different sizes to accommodate his loose toys and bricks nicely, and then a set of different boxes with lids for crafts, and then a place for books and jigsaws. That's all I can make it accommodate if I'm going to keep the size of the unit down to a minimum, as we really have no space to put a new piece of furniture. Anyway, I am ITCHING to build it!

We went for the wood today, and the post for the stairs. But Homebase were out of stock of the exact piece of wood I had planned to buy. I HATE when they have every single other size of wood planks absolutely crammed into their space on the shelves, but the ONE size you want is completely empty. Grrrr! Also they had nothing we could use for the stairs. So we went to Wickes. Nowt there either. So we went to B&Q. Nada. And back to Homebase to dither over the possible non-options for doing SOMETHING to the stairs. After all that, we were exhausted and Arthur was needing to go home and eat tea. The poor love was so good the whole time! He was patient (for a toddler!) and didn't make a fuss at being dragged round 3 different DIY warehouses, but every time we got in the car to drive to the next one, a little voice would pipe up in the back, "'Ome... 'ome... 'ome?" Eventually we had to go home as his tea was going to be late. I hate wasting an afternoon and coming away with nothing, especially when it's precious weekend "family" time or when I use up every ounce of my energy. It's so depressing! I was so irritable by the time we left B&Q, it was crazy. Arthur was doing a lot of his usual "uh-uh-uh-UH-UH-UHHH!" pointing at everything and demanding that we notice and verbally acknowledge it, like every few seconds while we were trying to discuss what to do. He does it WAY more when Neil and I are trying to talk to each other. Sometimes it seems like we can't actually speak a sentence to each other without Arthur trying to interrupt us. I don't know why he does that. But anyway, it is annoying the heck out of me lately. And I'm not dealing with it the best I could be, I just get snappy. By the time we were leaving B&Q I felt like pulling my own hair out every time Arthur made those sounds. I wanted to scream, "SHUT UUUUP!!!!" at him and I felt horrible that I had such an urge.

When we got home, we gave him tea, and he was as sweet as ever, just very noisy. I can't explain it, but I could not take his noise a second longer. My whole body and mind and soul craved utter peace and silence for just a few minutes, and there wasn't any, and at that moment it was so overwhelming that I just cried and cried! How silly. Neil sent me out of the kitchen to sit down and rest for a few minutes, but I just sat and cried more because Arthur's noise was still jangling my nerve endings and making me want to claw my own ears off. And I just suddenly felt overwhelmed with how there is too much to do before Matthew arrives and just NOT enough time to do it. I mean, we COULD do it all, but both of us are just absolutely knackered and stretched to the limit already. We already won't have any more weekends to actually rest before Matthew is here now. There is too much to get ready. And even then we might not get it all done. And that's without the added palava of the stairs needing some miracle to keep Arthur from climbing them. The toy unit seems like an obvious one to strike off the list, but I can not emphasize enough how much I NEED to build the darn thing! It will stress me out endlessly if I have to decide not to do it. It seems to be my nesting focus for some reason.

Anyway. After tea it was better. Arthur was getting tired, and he snuggled up against me on the sofa and breastfed for 20 minutes while we watched the start of the bedtime hour on CBeebies - he loves this combination of breast and the bedtime hour :) We never watch it more than 20 minutes because it's always bath time by about 6.30pm and the bedtime hour is 6-7pm. But anyway, it was a relief because Arthur was so nice and quiet and snuggly, and it was soothing for both of us. Neil went upstairs and searched online for solutions for the stairs issue. He started Arthur's bath running and when he came down he said he had found a solution! Yay! We are going to buy a BabyDan playpen. I hate playpens and absolutely do not plan to put any of my babies in one while I do other stuff (although, I say that now, but I'll probably be singing their praises somewhere down the line when I've just popped Matthew in it for a moment and he's loved it and I've ended up doing some crafts with Arthur or some housework!). But the BabyDan is great because it can be used as a room divider. We're going to use ours to make a 90 degree angled fence with a gate in it, to completely block off the corner of the room with the stairs in it, wall to wall. It will fit close-ish to the stairs, but without having to be mounted ON the stairs. We still need to get rid of the armchair, but in a way, that will be a big relief to get some extra space in the room.

All of a sudden, from absolutely nowhere, we remembered we opened a savings account - well, a set of four within the same bank - yeeeears ago when we first got engaged. We put money in it at first but then never added to it again. We withdrew most of the money for something or other - our first second-hand car, I think - and then the poor accounts have been ignored and neglected since then! We don't bother with them because we know there's only like £1.50 in them or something, hehe! We still get quarterly statements but we basically just put them in the drawer and don't even open them.

When we checked them today, we found that the "home" account has a whole £5.64 in it! Hahaha! Not as embarrassing as the "holiday" account, which only has £1.61 in it, hehe! And the "car" account has £12 in it. But we were soooo happy and surprised to find that we hadn't touched the "baby" account - I remember that we were so excited to set that one up, allll those years ago (8 years, I think!) when having babies was just so far out of our imagination that it was just something to giggle about awkwardly. But it was exciting to make a "baby" account anyway :) We knew we'd want it some day. Anyway, we found about £600 in it!!!!! What a blessing!

The combination of finding that money and figuring out a solution for the stairs crisis just felt like a wonderful relief to all my jangly hormonal emotions from earlier. I feel so much better to know that we have a solution! Neil says he has noticed I am a lot more sensitive these days, and that everything is "important" to me - wisely worded, hehe! I completely freak out if something really really minor can't be done when I want it to be. Neil thinks my hormones must be peaking or something! Poor Neil. He does put up with such a lot, and I'm so blessed to have him!

Anyway, yay, because now we can easily afford a BabyDan playpen, so this evening I went to good old Kiddicare.co.uk, where we have bought loooads of stuff in the past, and ordered one! :) I feel so relieved to have that sorted. It will be here during the first part of the week, I hope, and then we can fix it and Arthur will be safe around the stairs again. We'll phone the Princess Alice Hospice on Monday about the armchair I think.

Now that it's getting warmer, I am frantically trying to get summer clothes for Arthur on eBay. There always seems to be something that needs buying! We do it as cheaply as we possibly can though - nearly every single item of clothing that Arthur has ever worn has come from eBay! It's great, we have saved sooooo much money. Even though I'm still managing to spend perlenty with all my bidding, hmmm! It's so addictive. But I need to think of our bank balance a bit more! I love it when we actually NEED to buy things, because then I have a good excuse to bid on things at eBay :) Like now. Arthur needs summer clothes. He is not a heat-happy boy, and he has no cool clothes. My wins are starting to come in - he has a pair of short denim dungarees that he looks scrummy in, although he was still sweating like crazy in those on our 80 degree day this week. It's cool and rainy again now, of course, after a 2-day burst of warmth!

I can't imagine WHAT I was thinking, having a baby in June! I hate the heat sooo much. It's 50 times worse when heavily pregnant (thank goodness it's just June I'm due, not later in the summer!) and as much as I love breastfeeding, I am slightly wary of the sticky closeness of it when it's just too hot for comfort over Matthew's first couple of months. I just feel ill when it gets to hot or humid, it's not just that I dislike heat. It makes me feel physically horrible and headachy and cranky and heatrashy, and urrrgh! Arthur is the same. I hope Matthew likes the hot weather! Neil is fine with it though. We need another fan for the house. We only have one, and Arthur will need it on him when he naps or sleeps during the evening, which will leave me sticking to my smallest son with no moving air around us. So, another fan. Oh for air-con! But that is just COLD and drying, so maybe not. Anyway, I am kind of hoping for a crappy British summer! Those are so much more bearable :)

Oh it's sooo late. But I didn't want to forget to mention that Arthur came with me to my first dentist appointment in ages, and ended up having a bit of an examination of his own! I had some toothache so I found a local NHS dentist (I get free treatment on the NHS while I'm pregnant, so it made sense to ditch my private dentist, haha!), and made an appointment. I was nervous though, because I didn't know what to expect. BOY was it great!!! Apart from being free, it was a lovely waiting area, nice receptionists, no long waits, and we saw a REALLY nice young dentist with an equally nice young dental nurse. They gave us all the time in the world and seemed really knowledgeable about everything - some dentists just don't give me that vibe, y'know? They were so ultra friendly and thorough too. Arthur was such a good boy :) He stood at the foot of the dentist's chair which I was reclining in, and held on to my feet while the dentist examined my teeth and stuff. I don't have any signs of decay - hooray! I DO have very annoyed pregnant gums and teeth that needed professionally cleaning to stop the pregnant gums being so irritated. So he gave my teeth a proper cleaning and a polish :) And I got a free prescription for some mouthwash that will fix my sore gums. Arthur watched and watched, and didn't make any sounds at all. The nurse picked him up and held him up near my head so he could see, for a while. And she sat him on her swivel chair and spun him round slowly - he LOVED that!

After I was all done, I asked if I could ask a few questions about Arthur's teeth as well. The dentist was so nice, and gave me loads of time to talk about Arthur's teeth. Arthur has been getting white mottling on his teeth, especially the top front four, and I read online that this is called fluorosis, which is due to too much fluoride (ie, too much toothpaste). Everywhere recommends no more than a pea-sized blob of baby toothpaste, twice a day, for toddlers and young children. But Arthur doesn't even get that. We use a smudge of toothpaste, not even QUARTER of a pea! And often I am crap at brushing his teeth in the morning. We do a good thorough job at bedtime, but we really don't use much toothpaste, especially after I read that stuff online. But I got worried that I wasn't doing ENOUGH for his teeth and that he would get tooth decay. So I wanted to ask the dentist.

He said white mottling WAS fluorosis but when he heard how little toothpaste we were using, he said maybe we should just brush his teeth once a day with a tiny amount of toothpaste, and then just water the other time. I asked if it would be enough to prevent tooth decay and he said yes, so long as we were thorough with the brushing and he wasn't eating sweets and stuff that's basically all sugar. So we're doing that. He doesn't have any mottling to his teeth now, but it was always a bit on-and-off before anyway.

Anyway, he said they usually see children for their first dental appt from the age of two, but he asked if I would like him to take a look at Arthur's teeth now! So we put Arthur on the big chair and he smiled and smiled, but stopped smiling when latex-covered hands approached his mouth! He didn't fuss or seem anxious, he just did not want to open his mouth. Eventually he opened it a teensy bit and the dentist could see his molars coming in, and told me his teeth look really good and healthy right now :) When Arthur got down, the nurse offered him a sticker for being a good boy! My big boy! He just looked at the page of stickers like he didn't know what to do, so I pointed out one with an apple on it, and he looked interested suddenly (he loves apples) and pointed at it. The nurse stuck it to the front of his little hooded top that he was wearing, and Arthur watched it being stuck on, with his little chest stuck out to help him see. I just love watching him when things like this happen, just to drink in his every mannerism and response to things! It's so wonderful to watch, I don't know why. I could do it forever.

He looked up and seemed so pleased with the sticker being there on his chest. He kept touching it and smiling! Then the BEST bit came - well, it sounds not-that-exciting, but it really was to me! I said to him, "Say thank you, Arthur" and he looked up at me from staring at his sticker immediately, looked over at the nurse, and said clearly, "Ank-yooo!" It was SUCH a proud moment for me, I can't tell you! I am so thrilled that he has learnt to be polite and say thank you so nicely even though he really doesn't say much else at all. I especially love that these days, I just have to say, "Say thank you to the lady" or even "What do you say?" when someone has given him something, and he INSTANTLY gives them a charming look and says thank you nice and clearly. It has happened a lot more since the dentist's too. He is also starting to thank me for things spontaneously, like when I give him a cereal bar for his mid-morning snack when he has pointed at one and asked for it. I open it and roll the wrapper down, and as I hand it into his eager outstretched little hands, he says, "Ank-yoooo!" Bless him. He's such a lovely little boy :) I'm so fiercely proud of him! And of course it makes my day when he gets the huge response that he always gets, for being so little and cute AND saying thank you so sweetly, like he did at the dentist :) Absolutely every member of staff in that dental surgery was cooing over him by the time we left! ;) I love when people love my little boy! It's such a wonderful feeling.

Arthur is saying a few more things, I almost forgot. He says, "Boo" when he sees Boo on CBeebies (from the programme, "Where's Boo?"). He also says boo if he sees someone hiding their face behind their hands! If I am eating a cheese sandwich, he will put his finger on a piece of my cheese, and say, "Deee!" or "Deeez!" So he definitely knows, and is trying to say, cheese. He also says, "Deee(z)!" for beans and peas though ;) He says, "Oooo" for shoe, and sometimes gets a not-quite-pronounced "sh" sound in front of the "ooo", especially when Neil says it over and over with him while they're putting shoes on. He also says, "yay", "there" (sounds like "dare"), "that" ("dat!"), "ow" (not as great as it sounds - he'll say, "Ow!" with great glee as he wallops us with a toy or something! We're working on this one!) and "hi"/"bye" (sounds like "eye").

Last week he asked us to give him some medicine spontaneously for the first time, using the sign I made up to mean medicine a while back. It was bedtime and he was fussing and being cranky, and I figured it was because he was doing his normal bedtime fussy thing. He WAS chewing on his fingers a little more than usual, but sometimes he does when he's being cranky. All of a sudden he rolled onto his back, stopped fussing, looked me right in the eye, and signed medicine to me! I said, "Do you need some medicine?" and he gave me this relieved, happy expression and stopped signing :) We got him some teething powder straight away and after that I rubbed teething gel on his gums, and then he settled right down to sleep. I love that he can tell us when he needs medicine now! I wouldn't even have thought to give him any if he hadn't asked for some. His fourth molar has been through a week or two now. He has all of his first molar through, nearly the whole of his second one (both the top ones), three corners of his third one, and one or two corners of the fourth one. He is doing okay with cutting the molars, which is surprising considering how awful he finds it when he's cutting much SMALLER teeth!

My parents dropped in for a quick and unexpected visit a couple of weeks ago! They came over for a day and didn't even stay overnight! They took the overnight ferry here and then back again the same day! They came to go to a concert in London and it was so nice that they dropped in on their way back to the ferry :) They brought two hand-knitted jumpers that two ladies in their little French village had knitted for Arthur! The people there are so lovely. Mummy says they see Arthur as one of their own, or something! One of the jumpers is waaaay too big, and that's good because it's going to be too warm for him to wear it till next winter, but the other one is only a little bit too big, and I put it on him to take a photo or two for the lady who knitted it, a week ago before it got all hot:

Cutie boy :) He does have a thing for chewing wool though! I can sort of relate, as I'm sure I can recall liking the consistency and squeak of wool between my teeth when I was very little.

Okay, it's way too late, so here are the last few photos I meant to post - one of Arthur "reading" to himself the other day - he loves climbing up on the sofa, surrounding himself with cushions ("deee"s - I have no idea why cushions are deees, but they are!) and spending ages looking through his books and pointing at the pictures and lifting flaps, etc. He likes to do it on his own sometimes, and other times he brings the books to me and asks for a story :)

Arthur is breastfeeding like CRAZY these days. He nurses so frequently, and seems to be constantly signing milk in a frantic way, begging to nurse. He does it at night when he wakes, and I am starting to nurse him to sleep again at bedtimes, though if he fidgets for ages I stop the feed after maybe 10 minutes and say it's time for sleep. Other nights, he nurses to sleep in that time. He seems clingy and needy at the moment, and is very sensitive about me being close to him when he wants me to be. He has increased his nursing frequency so dramatically that I feel he must be aware of the big changes coming up and needing extra security and closeness with me. So I will nurse him to sleep if he needs that extra closeness, and I have always nursed him on demand in the day anyway. He still nurses to sleep for his naps without any problems, and sometimes if he's sleepy he has started breastfeeding on the sofa late in the morning and dozing off sitting up while he's snuggled up to my side breastfeeding! I just lay him backwards after I take him off the breast and he stays asleep on the sofa for 30 minutes or so and has a little nap there! Here he is last week after breastfeeding to sleep one morning on the sofa :)

My mum wondered if I am making milk enough for him to want to nurse more often, but I'm not. I AM making plenty of colostrum, but even "plenty" of colostrum is still only tiny amounts. It hasn't changed that much in recent weeks so it can't be that. Arthur now breastfeeds for 20 minutes sometimes, easily 5-10 minutes in the day most times that he feeds, and that is the biggest change. For many months now, he has been nursing whenever he likes in the day, quite frequently I suppose, but sometimes only taking a few sucks, or staying for a minute or so before going off to do something else. Now he wants to snuggle close and suck and suck and suck and just be all quiet next to me. He is very... I can't think of the right word... he seems very needy of me at the moment. I know he is heading for a big transition, and if he is aware of that then I wouldn't be surprised if he's feeling kind of uneasy about it. Poor little love. It makes me feel sad to think that he's only 17 months old and already he is feeling insecure about some big life event! It seems so young to have such worries. I am letting him be as close to me as he needs to be, as often as he wants - except that we are still trying to have him settle back to sleep at night with only Neil, and I don't go in at all. He cries a lot. Neil says he signs milk the whole time :( But what if he's doing that when Matthew is here and equally needy?! I can't be in two places at once, so we are persevering a bit at night times.

Anyway, he generally seems cheerful and confident and energetic. I soooo need to go to bed! Here's the last photo - I put Arthur's activity ring up against the sofa to get it out of the way for something, and later I found Arthur sitting in it taking a little breather, hehe! He looked so sweet, I had to take a photo!
