Matthew's first birthday party - photos and video clips!

Phew, back at last! I'm super queasy (morning sickness) now, so I just need to get on with this entry and finish it! I am starting to have loads to write about, for things that have happened since Matthew's birthday, but I still haven't posted the photos and videos and such from his birthday party, so I must do that tonight!

The party went great! It was very small - only my parents and my grandparents, so only 4 guests! But perfect for Matthew, as he knows them all and it was a gathering size he was happy with. It would have been more perfect with Bennie and Sarah and Thea here, but Thea is colicky and they have decided to just stay around their home (they don't have transport) for the first 6 weeks to make life easier. Definitely fair enough! She's 5 weeks old now. Bennie is still off work on paid paternity leave, because he works for my dad and my dad ROCKS as a boss - he gives the guys 6 weeks paid paternity leave because he saw how helpful that would have been for me if Neil had been given that long when Arthur was newly born! He's a great boss/daddy! :)

Anyway! So we had a teeny tiny party. None of Neil's side of the family could be there, because his mum and youngest sister live miiiiles away up north, and we had the party on a weekday (Matthew's actual birthday last Thursday), so Neil's brother was working.

The boys' little cousin, Ella, had her second birthday the same day! They were all busy that day (with work and birthday stuff) so we're going to meet up with them either this weekend or next. Probably next, as nothing has been arranged yet!

We left the timing of the party open till the day before, as my family were flexible and happy for us to let them know the time at the last minute, and Matthew can't decide whether he's dropping his morning nap or not, right now. If he only had one nap, the WHOLE day's dynamics change. So, he was having a run of days with two naps, and we made the party for 11am, after he would be up from his morning nap. The timing worked really well, which was great! It also meant that we served FOOD, which we never ever have occasion to do, so it was kind of nerve wracking! It went so well though. We bought food that was light and easy for anyone to help themselves to - just salad and french bread and ham and cheese and stuff. And some gooorrrgeous strawberries and raspberries! I was having some light spotting with my pregnancy so Mummy helped with all the food when it was time to lay it out, and that was great!

We opened presents first, and then ate lunch, and then did the "Happy Birthday" with the cake. We saved the pop-up activity tent/tunnel thing to be opened after all that, because then we could take it straight out in the garden and let the little ones play with it all they liked, having done everything else we had planned to do already.

Okay, photos!

Here's the very first thing we did - Matthew opened his birthday cards! See the blue envelope there, next in line for Arthur's envelope ripping frenzy?! That was a card from Esther, waaay over in the States! It's always so much fun to get things through the post from people I have actually met through my Diaryland diaries!! :) Thank you Esther!

And opening a present - Arthur was quite possessive about the presents, and was in a frenzy to rip the wrapping paper off them by himself! It was hard to keep him back a little to let Matthew join in!

Matthew did enjoy opening the presents, but he was more interested in eating the paper (ever the paper-eater since his first few months!). We did purposely choose toys that would be of interest to both the boys, and even a couple that were better suited to Arthur's age, but with a broad age-range which Matthew was at the start of, because Matthew will grow into them, Arthur will get loads out of them too, and there are perlenty enough toys for Matthew around the place as it is. He is only one, so he doesn't actually MIND that his birthday presents are going to be mostly commandeered by Arthur for a while!

We got the pop-up tent, which is a definite sharing toy, and which we know they will BOTH love equally even now. We got a Playskool gears thingy, which has a ton of cogs on a whirly board. It's actually not that exciting. You can remove all the cogs and put them in different orders and watch it all whirl round to the music. Anyway, Matthew's attention is caught by it for a moment, and Arthur LOVES it! It's a 9 months + toy though.

Here's a photo of the boys being interested in that toy (from behind, you can't see the toy), with a great-grandfather who was also rather taken with it, hehe!

We also got them (I mean, Matthew!) a Vtech bus with letters and numbers and music and all sorts. It's age 1-3 and we wanted to get them something electronic and "learning" based. They both LOVE it! Arthur wants to play with it constantly and gets soooo frustrated when Matthew grabs it or presses a random button to hear some music when Arthur is working his way through the letter buttons to hear the sounds they make! It gets HOURS of play every day at the moment.

My parents asked what to get Matthew, and Neil and I had wanted to buy ride on toys for Matthew's first birthday. We wanted to choose something for each of the boys, sort of as a "set", because Arthur never gets outdoor toys as gifts, since his birthday is in the winter. He doesn't have ANY outdoor toys (except a tiny falling-apart push car) so it would leave him out if we just got Matthew a ride-on toy for outside and not Arthur. We also want to get the boys trikes (something that Matthew can grow with, and another that is age appropriate for Arthur to use and grow with too), so that we can take them out to the swings and stuff. But the ride-on toys would be for the back garden.

Anyway, we couldn't find what we were looking for in the end, and ran out of time, so we went for the pop-up stuff and a few other things instead. We still planned to buy them the outdoor things when we move to a new house (soonish!) which will hopefully have a much bigger garden. We plan to make a bigger garden a high priority when we look for houses. We'll have a whole bunch of little kids who need to burn off energy and spend lots of time outdoors, while we're living at our next home, so we need to make sure it has the appropriate energy-burning space! :)

Anyway, gosh this isn't a quick queasy entry after all! Actually I've stopped writing 3 times now. Once because I felt too queasy, then to eat the bread rolls and cheese that I knew would make me feel a bit better (they did, yay!) and finally to resettle Matthew, who woke in a COLD sweat, crying and anxious! Poor lovey! I wonder if he had a bad dream? He settled back to sleep quite quickly with me holding him for a while though, and I had no trouble putting him back down. So it's getting late, but I want to finish this entry. Where was I?

Oh yes! So we eventually asked my parents to buy a ride-on car that both the boys could enjoy. They only had one day to buy it while they were here, so I reserved a Bob the Builder Scoop digger at Argos! It's very stable and has a walker back so Matthew can use it as a walker before he's ready to ride it. I knew Arthur would love it anyway! It has sounds and the Bob the Builder theme too. They both really love it! The seat is unexpectedly high so Matthew's feet can't even touch the ground, but he likes being pushed around on it, and he loves walking - pushing Arthur while Arthur rides it! And he loves pushing the buttons to make the music and doing a funny little boppy dance :)

Here is a teeny tiny video (a few seconds long) of Matthew part-way through unwrapping the Bob the Builder digger, pausing to take a few steps! Only a few, and the camera angle really didn't show his actual steps very clearly, but it's his FIRST steps caught on video so I have to include it! :) He is attempting to walk in the house really frequently now. He takes anywhere between 3 and 8 steps at a time. If he's too excited about it, he falters and doesn't manage many steps, but if he's relaxed he just walks till he reaches where he wants to be!

Anyway, video clip!

And here's another of Matthew on the digger just after it was unwrapped and put together :) Arthur was SO eager to have his turn, bless him! He said to Matthew, "Get off!" at one point, and was desperate to push the buttons too!

He did get his turn though! Here he is playing "fwaffic jams" with the digger and the bus! He looooves making (or being part of) fwaffic jams :)

Okay, what came next? I didn't take any photos during the food-eating, because I came over exhausted and weak and painfully hungry, so I just sat at the buffet table and ATE ravenously, haha! Everybody else was more sociable and ate in the living room. Matthew had his highchair in there with the crafts mat underneath, so he could be part of it too. He enjoyed all the food. I still totally LOVE that we did baby-led weaning with him! He can eat anything that adults eat, in any form. We don't have to cut his food up much more than we do our own. Nothing is a "will he?/won't he?" new food because he is used to it all from an early age. Arthur, on the other hand, pretty much only ate the insides of a couple of sausage rolls and some grated cheese. Matthew even had tomato salad with parsley and vinegraitte (mmm, pregnant mmm!)! I will do baby-led weaning every time with my future babies. Oh, that reminds me! My mum said she read an online news article (British, maybe the BBC?) the other day which I now can't find for anything, which said how researchers are finding (or something??) that giving a baby finger foods from the start of solids is the most natural way to introduce food, and that feeding babies purees actually has evidence of potentially causing later feeding problems! This is definitely so with Arthur, but then there are plenty of puree-fed babies who don't have troubles later on, I suppose. But that's just why we did it - it IS the most natural thing to do. I can't fathom where feeding babies pureed food ever came from in the first place! It seems crazy to me now that we've done this fab, easy, and suddenly rather "obvious" thing with Matthew. I wish I could find that article, because I'm interested in reading more about the latest thoughts/findings on the subject. I honestly think that eventually society as a whole is going to finally cotton onto the fact that there is a better way to start babies on food than make it into goop. I think babies are MADE to eat food as it is.

Oops, off on a soapbox-y tangent there, sorry! I can't even remember what I was saying.... Oh, so no photos during lunch. I've just realised how my nausea is easing off! Yay! It eases off around midnight (urgh, is that how late it is?!) and doesn't trouble me overnight. I suddenly realised what I had just been writing about and how it hadn't bothered my stomach to do so! ;)

Anyway! After lunch came birthday cake! I was NOT thrilled with my attempt at a homemade birthday cake this year. I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do till the last minute, and then finally I figured I would do a stacking blocks design, because Matthew loves stacking blocks at the moment. I did pastel colours because it was easiest with the food colouring/icing options! BUT, when I assembled the whole thing (at FOUR AM the night before, I might add - it took me all darn night to do it for some crazy reason!), it didn't support its own weight and all the nice cube shaped cake pieces buckled and their icing broke and I got soooooo cross with it that I could have thrown it on the floor and stamped on it! ;) But in the end I just (lamely) put two blocks next to each other, decorated them with a little sugarpaste "ribbon" to look like parcels, and put a message on the top. I wasn't happy with it. It was a crap design. But oh well. It tasted nice, so that's important! :)

Here are a couple of photos of the cake moment - the boys clapping after blowing the candle out, which I did in the end! Matthew couldn't blow and I meant to help Arthur blow, but he didn't blow at that moment and my blow was stronger than I thought so - poof! - out it went! Never mind :)

And Arthur poking his finger in the cake!

Neil was behind the video camera so we asked my daddy to bring the cake in. Here's the little video clip that Neil took, of us singing Happy Birthday to Matthew:

Arthur was desperate for cake! Here they are enjoying some:

A random photo of Nana being kept busy by her little grandsons! :)

After that, Arthur helped Matthew open the pop-up tent/tunnel set:

And then we all went out in the garden, where we set the pop-up stuff out in no time, and the boys had a great time playing in it, while the adults acted like papparazi, hehe!

Little video clip of the same (I don't think there really was a spider in the tunnel as Arthur was suggesting at the end!):

They also played with the digger for a while outside:

And then they thoroughly trashed the pop-up stuff!! ;)

That was the end of the party. My grandparents left and then my parents had to go so they could fit a quick visit to see Thea before they had to catch their evening ferry back to France. They came 3 days before the party though, so we did see quite a bit of them! They saw the boys and Thea every day - us in the morning and Thea in the afternoons :) That was lovely.

After the party the boys played a little longer outside, and then we brought the stuff inside and we all went for a nap. After nap time, it was just a normal day. They did play with the tunnel bit (their favourite part!) inside for a while:

But mostly they just played as normal. Arthur played a lot with the Vtech bus, and Matthew did his usual thing, pottering around playing with things. He has this sweet thing he does at the moment - he drives cars and trains around EVERYWHERE. He has such a huge attention span for his age, for this activity! He has been doing it since he was soooo little! I love it because he makes "brrrmmm" sounds as he pushes them around the furniture or floor! So sweet! I also love that he does it because he has copied Arthur doing it :) Matthew often likes to do his normal activities with a box on his head! That funny little muffin, hehe!

And that is ALL of the birthday photos! Yay! I finally got them posted! Almost a week after his birthday but oh well! I have so much else to write about - I soooo want to write about the sleep issues with both the boys and what we're doing about it. And Tumble Tots! I want to write about Tumble Tots! And Arthur's talking AGAIN. And the latest on the job/move situation. And Matthew's antics (and how we're only partially coping with them, yeurgh!). And more photos, since his birthday. And um. I'm sure there's lots more. But I will just leave this as a birthday entry for now, and come back to do more when I'm able. Might not be immediately, but as soon as I can! Some stuff is really pressing me to get out here, so I will try to write again soon! Thank you for all the lovely comments after my last entry on Matthew's birthday, and all the birthday wishes for him! :)

Matthew's First Birthday - just a quick entry for now...

Thank you for the lovely birthday wishes for Matthew, and the sweet comments on my letter! :)

It's soooo late and I am tired out with a headache - I am nuts for even still being awake and on the computer! *sigh* BUT, I did want to just say SOMETHING here on Matthew's birthday! He's officially a year old now, as his time of birth was late in the evening :)

I can't believe I have a one-year-old again! My kids are aged 2 and 1. And another on the way! Yikes! I'm so happy.

We had a great day - our little birthday party went well. I have FIFTY-TWO photos, but allll of them would be severe overload (!) so I have chosen four of my favourites to post tonight. I will write about the day and post a ton more photos soon, but I don't know how soon because it's just hard to find time to update properly at the moment. That's why I really wanted to post some pictures tonight. My next diary priority over the next day or so will be my pregnancy diary, since I need to update there. I don't have time tonight, but quickly to update on the spotting for anyone who reads there too - it went before bed yesterday, stayed away most of today and came back as before around 5pm. I didn't see a doctor today, but I will tomorrow, if I can get an appt. I'll update about it tomorrow at my pregnancy diary.

But back to the point of tonight's entry! My beautiful boo-bean is ONE! He's teething this evening and seems miserable about something. I'm worried his tummy is hurting him because he keeps putting his hand to a specific spot on his abdomen and making desperate communicating efforts with his eyes while he cries :( Poor Matthew. I don't know what it is, but hopefully he'll sleep okay. I gave him teething stuff when he woke this evening and breastfed him, but he still didn't settle well. Other than that he has been happy and energetic all day! My sweet boo!

Okay, that really is all I have time for. Neil took a lot of video footage too so will look at that soon and see if there is anything to upload and post here. Here are my favourite photos (some of them!) from today, in chronological order! I feel highly cringey about posting the first one here, for some reason, as it is such a ME photo and I feel squeamish about photos of me, especially very clear ones! But I LOVE it, because it's me and my Mathsie-woo! It was taken right after we blew out his cake candle and sang happy birthday (hence the darkened room and flash!). Then there's one of MANY taken outside (you'll see more of those soon!) which I love soooo much. I waited ages for him to turn around just right when I called his name, camera poised! ;) I love how it came out. I think I might even print and frame that one, it's so lovely! Then there's Matthew being full of monkeyness after his bath this evening, and then finally conked out in bed, which he took FOREVER to do - it was 9.20pm before either of the boys were asleep, ugh. They will not be so well off for that late night, but I hope they might make it up in naps tomorrow or something?

Anyway - photos!

A letter to my tiny birthday boy

There are seven minutes left until the 14th of June begins, and I just can. not. believe. that means it's Matthew's first birthday! My baby boy is one!! Almost. He wasn't born until 10.45pm so he won't technically be a year old until late tomorrow after he's been in bed a good while. Today has marked the first anniversary of my cervical sweep, as I was almost a week overdue and getting desperate! ;) It worked, anyway, and my sweetie bean was born the next day :) I was not in labour at all this time a year ago, though. No contractions yet, I don't think.

I can't believe a whoooole year has passed! In some ways it feels like TEN years (!), but in others, it's like I blinked and it's vanished!

I never did write letters to Arthur on his birthdays. I don't know why. It was always something I wanted to do, and even planned to do, but I never got around to it or something. With Matthew I have already written him one spontaneous letter and tonight I just FELT like writing him another letter. I am not sure I like that - the way even when I WANTED to, I haven't yet written a thing to Arthur, but I seem to be having more outpouring emotive stuff towards Matthew. I hope that doesn't mean I feel sort of "wrongly" differently towards them? Right now, I am besotted with Matthew. I always have been. And I love Arthur completely, too. But maybe it's that Arthur is TWO and sometimes holds me at arms length and makes me want to pull my skin off?! ;) Matthew hasn't yet reached that darling stage, and he is still just soft and squidgy and dimply-smiley (he has a dimple in his left cheek, just EXACTLY like mine! I think I have forgotten to mention that here all this time), and adores me without rebelling, nuzzles and cuddles me frequently on a whim, and is just a pure baby delight! I know our days are numbered with the above blissful stuff, but I'm excited about his next (more turbulent!) year all the same.

I just can't believe that already, Matthew has gone from this:

To this:

Dear Matthew,

I can't believe you are about to have your first birthday! It seems like no time has passed since you were in my tummy. I even remember what it felt like, clear as day, to have you move around inside me and to feel your little limbs with my hand on my tummy.

I think about your birth all the time. All the time. I love to re-live it in my mind! I remember the pain, but that part is so faded now. All I can think about is the joyful bit of your actual arrival, and how hectic and unexpected it was! You were born right here at home in the living room, into Daddy's hands. Nana and Grandy were here too, and they saw you arrive. It was just us, my treasure, and I'm so glad! Daddy says you were born alert. I was on my hands and knees when you were born, so you were facing up at the ceiling as you came out. When Daddy could only see your forehead and eyes, before any of the rest of you was born, your eyes were WIDE open, staring up into the room. We discovered that this was just part of who you are, as you have always been such an alert and interested baby.

I could write forever about your first year. So much has happened and you've done so many new things and changed so very much! You love your brother and he loves you, and we have so enjoyed watching you play together and seeing your relationship develop.

I love everything about you that I can possibly think of. You are so much fairer than Arthur, with your lighter hair and blue eyes. You look so different as well! You have Daddy's "layout", of your facial features and your head shape. You look a lot like Grandad, Daddy's Daddy, who died while you were still in Mummy's tummy. We gave you Grandad's name for your middle name, and you somehow look a lot like him, even though you generally look more like Mummy than Daddy.

I love your sweet little face. I love that you have one dimple when you smile, in your left cheek, just like me! I love the shape of your eyes when you smile mischievously! I love how soft your cheeks are when I kiss them. I could kiss your cheeks forever, without stopping!

You are just the sweetest love. You have a wonderful giggle. Every time you giggle or make your sound that is the start of a laugh, everything in me just flips over with a huge surge of love for you. I love to make you happy. I'm sorry for when I get impatient with you, when you are still so little.

I wish time would slow down so that you could stay this little for longer. It's rushing by so fast, and the days will disappear where you snuggle into my neck when I hold you before I put you into your cot at bedtime. One day you won't be breastfeeding any more, and that's such a sad thought for me! I love breastfeeding you so much! You sign for milk ever so sweetly these days - such an earnest look in your eyes as you try to communicate with me, and your little fingers all open and close randomly instead of the usual whole-fist opening and closing! But I know it's your way of asking me for milk. It's unique to you.

You ARE unique, Matthew, and I love you so much.

Your next year is going to be so busy for you! You will learn to walk and talk and run and jump. You will grow and grow, and play with Arthur in many more ways than you're able to now. You will become a big brother yourself, because Mummy is going to have another baby - a new baby brother or sister for you and Arthur. When your next year comes to an end, you will be a really BIG boy, just like Arthur is now! I can't imagine that at all, but it is sure to come just as quickly as your first birthday has, if not faster.

I just wanted to tell you, as you turn one year old, how much I love you, and how much I have cherished this first year with you. I will always treasure it and miss it when it's gone. But, because you are you, and because there isn't a dull moment with you around, I am eagerly looking forward to each year to come as you get older.

I wish I could put into words my feelings for you. I think we might end up with lots of children in our family, but you will always have your own special place in Mummy's heart. You will always be my lambie, my Mathsie. Happy Birthday little precious. I love you so.

Mummy x

Clever Matthew! :)

Well, it's all go here! ;)

Matthew has been taking a few steps at a time lately, two or three at best (mostly more like one or two together). We encourage him to walk to us and sit a foot or so away on the floor while he holds onto the sofa. He LOVES this and gets so excited! He turns his body out from the sofa, leans towards us and, with a big grin on his face, attempts to walk to us. Lately he has not been even doing one step. He just stretches his arms RIGHT up in the air, tenses up completely, and topples forward onto us like a plank! Funny boy! He had stopped taking his few steps for a week or so, I think because he was working on a toothie - the one which appeared yesterday.

So, today I saw Matthew standing at the sofa, and sat down where I was (on the other side of the room) with the camera. I figured it would be GREAT to take a photo of Matthew standing facing out from the sofa, like he does. He stands still for a moment and smiles, and I thought that would be a great opportunity. I was MILES away from him compared with how close I normally sit, but never mind.

So I aimed the camera and started the usual encouragement, "Mathiiieeee! Can you walk to Mummyyy?!" :) His eyes lit up and he did exactly what I expected him to do, and I got my photograph just as he "set off". But he kept walking!!!! He walked right across the room to me!! I frantically snapped another blurry picture as he was halfway over, but I was mostly busy going, "NEIL! HE'S WALKING!!" and "Oh WOW, Mathsie, clever boy!" and similar stuff! I'm so amazed. I think it took him 6 or 7 steps to reach me, and each step was careful and non-wobbly. It looked SO surreal to see my tiny boy step-stepping across the floor to me like that! Like, it looked so weird - I couldn't think what was holding him upright, haha!

My WALKING BOY!! We'll see if he actually continues it and really does turn out to be a walking boy! He already did the same walk again, but I was sitting a bit closer and he did 4 steps over to me.

Anyway, that is all I have time to write today, but I thought I would post the pictures. And one of Matthew looking VERY pleased with himself! ;) I love that picture. They were all taken about 2 hours ago, today.

Thanks so much for the congrats over Neil's job thing, and the offers of help/advice re. the area we'll be moving to. We're moving a way further than the Surrey/Hants border. Will reply to emails soon, hopefully! :)

Big news for us!!

I owe emails, I owe emails - I promise I'm not ignoring anyone who has recently sent me SUCH lovely emails, but I just have to update both my diaries first. Today can not end without updates! I will get to emails soon (maybe not tonight though)!

Neil had his other job interview today. It was a second interview as he passed the first one with flying colours. He came home this afternoon saying he felt that he'd impressed them and he was confident, but that they had someone(s?) else to interview yet. He did say that the lady told him, "Thank you Neil - hopefully we'll see you soon!" so that sounded very promising! Within an hour of arriving home, Neil's agency phoned and told him HE GOT THE JOB!!!! Wheeeeeee!

Will now copy/paste all the info about it and what it will mean for us (moving wise) from 2 entries ago, in case anybody missed that and thinks I haven't said a THING about where and what it means for us, etc! I'm too lazy/pushed for time to actually write it all out afresh! ;)

"He has another interview on Friday, somewhere we'd both REALLY like to live. It's a couple of hours southwest of London and we've heard nothing but wonderful things about the place. It's a thriving town but drive anywhere and you're in the countryside. It's nearer the coast for easy access to/from my parents via the ferry, and it's not a million miles from family nearer London. It has a huge friendly charismatic church which appears to be the centre of the community (someone new at our church went there!), and people are actually moving there for the great schools. The house prices mean we can afford a 3-bed house in the area, but if we live up to 45 mins commute from where Neil works (if he gets the job, of course!), we can afford a spacious FIVE-bed house. Which would just be a dream. I can feel my eyes shining, just thinking about it! ;) And fresh air, ohhhh fresh air! The pollution here STINKS, and I'm fed up with it. What we are longing for is SPACE, both green/countryside type of space, and inside our home, and fresher air. I'm excited about this job.

The two jobs are very similar but Neil thinks the London one might hold better long-term prospects. I am REALLY not thrilled about the London one. We'd still have to move away somewhere more affordable, but staying near enough London would mean not affording a hugely spacious place and probably not getting too far away from the pollution. And it would guarantee a commute for Neil. I hate the idea of him commuting. Commuting SUCKS!

Anyway. We'll see. The interview for the job further away is actually a second interview. They were very impressed with him at the first one, so now he has to meet the partners in London! Yikes! I suppose he COULD get offered both (or neither, come to think of it), and if he does he will have to choose. I am anxious that he'll want to choose the London one. We'll see. I'll update about it as and when!"

We're so thrilled! But also just whirling with everything that needs to happen. Neil is accepting the job as soon as the written offer arrives next week. He won't bother waiting for the London one. They offered him less than he expected, but still more than he's currently on. We have spent the whole evening looking online at properties in a 10 mile radius of where Neil's work is, to get an idea of what we can afford in the area (if anything!). At the moment we’re feeling encouraged because while we can’t afford anything suitable actually IN the town where Neil will be working, we can afford a 3-bedroom house in nearby towns/villages. About the same kind of distance that Neil currently travels to work (15 min train journey) except hopefully near enough to a station that he doesn’t have to walk the same length of time to get to the train. Anyway, a nice short commute! :)

There’s so much to think about and do. I don’t like to say place names online unless they’re pretty broad (like London, that covers a HUGE area!), but we’ll be moving to Hampshire. Anyone who already has my address will of course be getting my new one when we move – I don’t mind telling people I already know and trust through my diary! :)

Neil’s notice period at work is one month, so I reckon he’ll be starting his new job in about 5 weeks time! Yikes! I can’t imagine we’ll manage to clean up the house, fix up the DIY things that still need doing, put it on the market, SELL, BUY in Hampshire, close the sale, and move all within 5 weeks!!! But I DO know that God is faithful and can make absolutely anything happen. We have ALWAYS been amazed in the past whenever we’ve moved house. Only twice, but both times God has done something amazing for us, that just couldn’t have been possible without him. Like, oh, thousands of extra £s just falling into our laps as a gift the DAY we realised we were that much short on the deposit for the house we currently live in. The exact right amount. God is so faithful to us when we have these big life changes, and after seeing him provide time and time again, I am confident and expectant that he will provide again. I’m so excited to see what he chooses to bless us with this time! I don’t know if it will be a miraculously speedy sale/buy process, but even if it’s not, Neil has figured out that he can commute on a fast train from here, just over an hour each way. So he wouldn’t have to live elsewhere for the working week, and we wouldn’t have to all move into rented accommodation while we try to sell our house here (which we can’t afford to do anyway). So, already – thank you God! :)

But, there are some aspects that nudge my negativity into action (*sigh*). I’m worried that we won’t get a home in a nice area. Nice areas are really important to me now that we’re settling down to raise our family, and our kids will get to an impressionable age and play with other kids in the area, while we live there. We can’t see what it actually looks like because we don’t live near enough, and I can’t think how we’ll actually go about viewing and seriously putting offers on homes. It just doesn’t feel like it will work to haul the little ones there (1.5-2 hours drive?) and back to view houses and do boring stuff all day. So far, we haven’t done much travelling with them because they don’t seem to do it too well! They act like pent up animals, and I don’t blame them! So I wouldn’t like to do that. BUT we can’t leave them anywhere while we go and view and stuff. Neither of them have ever been without me for any length of time. Just since February I have been doing the weekly supermarket shopping on Saturday afternoons while they nap. Neil naps with them and by the time I get home they are awake, so they know I have been gone. But that is it. We have not had any other separations. I don’t plan on changing that any time soon. They are so little and we don’t have anyone we could leave them with anyway, even if they WERE used to it. So hmmm. Maybe Neil will have to go and I’ll have to trust his judgement, and God! That’s what we did for the place we currently live in (which I love sooo!), because I was housebound with M.E. then and was too poorly to view this particular property. It’s soooo long ago now, but HOW WEIRD that all that stuff is actually journalled about in my sheepdip diary. That goes back a long way in our history now! I started it in Jan 2001, which is only 17 months after we got married, and now we’ve been married almost 8 years!!! I love that it’s all here. If Diaryland ever goes under or gets wiped out or something, I think I will need therapy to get over the loss! Seriously.

Anyway. The other thing is that I am currently 4.5 weeks pregnant. Soooo early, yes, I know. But I also know that from 5 weeks and 6 days (yes, that precise!), morning sickness will hit me like a sledgehammer, and not ease off till at least 13 weeks. That covers the entire window of our big relocation!!! Aaaaahhh!! I am honestly not sure how to manage it all with morning sickness. I’m not sure how to manage life WITHOUT the big move/new job thing, just looking after the boys with morning sickness! Yeurgh. I am praying for a merciful first trimester with minimal morning sickness (none would be marvellous but then I’d freak about whether the baby was okay, etc).

Also, getting the house sorted. I can’t even begin to describe the state of the house! I don’t know how we can possibly sort it out FAST so that we can have it ready to have people come and view it, so that they’ll like it enough to want to buy it! Neil says he’ll ask his brother (who recently moved quite near to us) to come and help a couple of evenings, but that seems like it’s going to barely make a dent in the huge mountain of everything we need to do. We can’t do much in the evenings because they boys are sleeping. We need to pay for:

• A cleaner to clean the house up
• A packing company to sort and pack everything for us
• A decorator to finish ALL the painting jobs
• An electrician to do all the odd electrical jobs that need finishing
• A handyman-type-person to do all the other stuff like hanging doors, finishing door frames, etc.

And I can’t think what else. Oh, garden related stuff. We can’t realistically do much of it ourselves, because we’ve been trying for EVER and it never happens. We are just too tied up with the little ones at this stage of life, and we don’t have any family nearby who can actually take the kids on while we get stuff done. I wish we did! It would make life so much easier.

Anyway, that is our current thinking. Now it’s so late – got sidetracked by more properties Neil wanted to show me on the computer (I’m on the laptop), and Matthew woke twice (toothie #6 arrived today! It’s the other top lateral, on the right (my right) next to his top front teeth) and cried lots and was hard to resettle. But I must must update my pregnancy diary too, as it’s been days since I did so, and I like to update there as frequently as I can when I’m actually pregnant! :)

Two quick things: Arthur has a big thing about “Mummy doing me!” rather than Daddy, when it comes to things like getting him down from the table (cleaned up and lifted down), nappy changed, and dressed after baths, etc. I don’t know why, it’s just some stage he’s going through. He gets really quite stroppy and tantrummy if it has to be Neil – poor Neil! If I’m upstairs sleeping or something, he doesn’t mind a bit. It’s only if both of us are there that it has to be Mummy doing him! Anyway. Usually when the boys have had their bath (which they now share, I think I forgot to say! They’ve been sharing a bath for a month or so now, and it’s going great. Neil no longer baths with them, which is kind of sad to leave that behind, because he has done so since Arthur was born. Matthew does still sit in his bath seat though, but Arthur isn’t awfully safe in the bath and tends to go crazy hyper and not do anything he’s told (a whole ‘nother story for a whole ‘nother entry!) so I couldn’t bear to think about Matthew being unsupported without a bath seat while they share a bath!

Anyway! So after their bath, Neil usually wraps Arthur in a big towel and takes him downstairs while I wrap Matthew in a big towel and take him down. Then I change Matthew into his night nappy and sleepsuit, which Neil does the same for Arthur. This is sometimes an “I want Mummy!” moment for Arthur, but he doesn’t usually push it. Yesterday Arthur was out of the bath before Matthew, because he’d been whacking heavy sheets of water into Matthew’s face (let’s not go there right now! Urrrgh!) so after he’d been told off and he was ready to go downstairs, I wrapped him up and took him downstairs while Neil did Matthew. As we left the bathroom, the warm bundle of towels in my arms suddenly said, “Oh, you’re so lovely!” His voice was full of delight! I said, “What?!” (not expecting such a compliment!) and he said, “I. Really. Love. You!!” and then sighed a happy sigh and said, “I’m so glad you’re doing me!” :) You HAVE to love that boy! He’s the sweetest little monkey mischief maker I ever did see :)

And, oh bother, I can’t remember the other thing. Tsk. Oh but thank you SO much for the lovely compliments on the photos last entry!!! I’m glad you guys like the new diary photo! I wish they looked a little more like “themselves” because their little faces are a bit squished onto each other’s so that they don’t quite look like they normally do, in the face. But it was tooooo lovely not to use! It’s my online signature for the message boards I post at now, too! :)

Oh I remember! Matthew’s birthday is only SIX days away!!!! I was already past my due date with him this time last year. How weird. And Arthur is 31 months old today, since it’s the 9th! I just can’t believe there are only 5 months till he’s 3. Five months will go in NO time. I want time to slow down a little, for Arthur!! But speed up a little, for my tiniest bean!! I can’t wait to meet him/her!

Okay, time to move on to the pregnancy diary methinks! :) I’ll be back again soon!

New diary photo and quick update

Rushed entry as it's 11am and I'm updating at the TV (plugged in to the computer since our monitor broke!), which means it's at the boys level and they're all over me at the moment!

1) New photo at the top of my diary!! Yay! I took it about an hour ago. I love it soooo much. There are several that are nearly the same - here's how it started (Matthew was giving Arthur kisses!):

I actually quite like this other one, for the softer look on Matthew's face (and less squished cheek!) but Arthur wasn't looking at the camera:

They are SO cuddly together these days, it's ultra cute!! They play or cuddle or chase around the floor most of the day. I'm SO thrilled that we've been blessed to have two little boys so close in age because Arthur's only 2 and a half and already he has such a perfectly little playmate in Matthew. They so enjoy each other! I think it is going to be a BIG plus when I have times where I am busy breastfeeding or settling the new baby. Someone at FF who has three children (and another on the way) with the same gaps as I have told me that going from two to three children will be much easier, esecially if the first two get on so well. They will keep each other entertained really well. I do need to get more organised in general though, in preparation for it all!

Anyway, so that's the first thing.

2) Thanks so much to those who asked about Neil's job interview! Sorry I didn't update right away, I have just had no time or else been too tired (or busy wasting 3 hours writing a pregnancy diary entry that then got lose in an instant! Tsk!).

The interview went well. He doesn't find out whether he's been accepted for 2nd interview till next week, by which time he'll have had his 2nd interview for the other job (tomorrow!). He's thinking that if the one tomorrow results in a job, he will just take it and not bother going on with the other one (which is in London - we kind of want to get away from London). I'll try to update about tomorrow's one asap!

Arthur's so good! I just want to post a couple more photos and the boys were starting to cling to my legs and generally sabotage my efforts at typing, so I asked Arthur if he could go and play with something while I just finished off. He hopped down, andn said, "Come on Mashew! Let's do somesing new while Mummy focus on that!" :) I didn't know he knew "focus"! His talking seems pretty much "complete" (though I'm sure it's not yet) and has for a while, but he still surprises me sometimes with new concepts and phrases. They went to play with the Duplo :)

We're doing new things with sleep, for the boys. Now that we know another baby is on the way, we are suddenly way more motivated to get the little ones a bit more independent at getting to sleep. It's time we were able to put Arthur to bed, kiss him goodnight (after the milky (that's what he calls breastfeeding) of course!), and leave the room, so that he can take himself to sleep.

Okay, will have to finish this later - Matthew hasn't napped this am and is now getting to meltdown all of a sudden, clinging and clutching at me and crying. Here are the 3 photos I was going to post, of Arthur yesterday. He had a long pm nap (1.5 hours!!) and then when I brought him down, he promptly fell asleep again on the sofa for another 30 minutes! Of course I took photos ;)

Isn't he GORGEOUS?! I know I'm horribly biased, but.... He's like a perfect little cherub to me while he's sleeping! I could watch his sweet face for ever.

Okay, I must go! Back soon. I have more photos yet.

Another baby, and a MILLION photos. Seriously.

Soooo ridiculously long since my last entry!

I have no time to update because it's late and I'm indescribably exhausted, but I neeeeed to update here. I'm sure pretty much everyone reads my pregnancy diary, but in case you don't (and for this diary's records!) I just wanted to say here that I am pregnant again! I tested positive the day before yesterday (is it really only that recently?! It feels like a WEEK at least!) and will be a huge 4 weeks pregnant tomorrow! The new baby is called Beanlet, until we know the sex (which we WILL be finding out!) and he/she is due on February 11th 2008 - Granny's 82nd birthday! I'm so excited! But mostly it's surreal. Our chances for pregnancy were LOW, so although I knew it was possible, it's kind of, well, surreal, like I said! I can't get it into my head yet. Arthur and Matthew are 19 months apart, and Matthew and Beanlet will be 20 months apart. There will be 3 years and 3 months between Arthur and Beanlet. I must be nuts! ;) But I'm so excited.

Okay, no time for other waffle. Oh, except Neil has a job interview in London this week, on Tuesday. He was avoiding jobs in London because we want to move AWAY from the stinky city (plus it's sooo expensive to live in Greater London), but it's a great opportunity and they INSTANTLY asked him to attend an interview. I mean like 10 minutes after he told the agency they could send them his CV! He has another interview on Friday, somewhere we'd both REALLY like to live.

We'll see. I'll update about it as and when!

It's Matthew's birthday in 11 days!!!!! Nooooooo! I can't believe my baby is going to be one! We're having a teeny tiny family party, with only my side of the family. Neil's side are either working (his birthday is a Thursday and we want to celebrate on the day), too far up the country, or else busy celebrating Ella's birthday, as she and Matthew share the same birthday, one year apart! We'll invite everyone though, so as not to leave anyone out. I think we'll just have a gathering here at home. We were going to go for a picnic at the park, which I'd LOVE to do, but Arthur would run off everywhere and we'd spend the entire time chasing him down, and Matthew would simply eat everything on the ground (grass, leaves, dirt, deer poo, etc!!) and not stop until we picked him up, whereupon he'd squirm and screech and be generally suspiciously tantrummy! So that wouldn't be so good. I can't wait to do outdoor parties for Matthew, as the whole family on my side seems to have winter birthdays! It's so nice to have a summer baby for birthday parties! It'll be much more suitable from his 2nd birthday onwards though. And this way we are already inside for if it's raining, and comfy enough with our PRECOIUS air-conditioner (how I love thee!) if it's hideously hot and humid or something.

We'll keep it simple, very much like Arthur's birthday parties have been so far, and maybe have the back garden tidied and the lawn mowed so we can be out there if it's too nice not to go out! I am going to think of a cake to make soon. Too much else on my mind at the moment.

Okay, I HAVE to go to bed! Photos, and then I'm off!

Arthur having a lovely mucky painting session, making handprints, a couple of weeks ago:

Arthur eating a little chocolate fish with SUCH intricately detailed carving on it! It was a late Easter gift to him (along with a TON of other chocolate that I'm not sure I want to feed him!) from some of my parents' friends in France :)

Arthur's hands on the scanner, haha! ;)

I am behind on a MILLION photos of Matthew. Here are a bunch of them:

I told you there were lots! ;) I hope it didn't take forever for the page to load. I need to just update my tickers at the bottom - Beanlet's one has taken the place of Matthew's so I needed to make him a new ticker for his age, and I have to put that on this diary. And then I'm going to bed! I am writing daily at my pregnancy diary and some days when I haven't got time to update here too, I write some stuff there that is more related to this diary, about the boys and stuff. But otherwise I will TRY to update here too. I know I neglected it somewhat last pregnancy! Once I get morning sick I will not be able to use the computer much, as I find it makes me feel so much worse. Morning sickness for me tends to kick in at 5 weeks and 6 days (very precise so far!) and last till as least 13 weeks. But I'll post! Just not as often, maybe, while that's going on. I WILL update about job/moving stuff, and preparations for Matthew's birthday, etc.

Oh, he got his 5th tooth last week! It's the left lateral (as you look at him) next to his top front teeth. Arthur got his top laterals before his bottom ones too, and so did I :) Arthur's top laterals were well in by Matthew's age, so he's slowed down on the teething front. Toothie #5 is not in enough to capture on camera yet. #6 is looking like it will come through in the next couple of days maybe. He's sleeping BADLY at the moment, so I hope that's all it is, and that he'll go back to sleeping well after the tooth is through!

Okay, night night! :)
