I don’t think I can stand it, Lord. I don’t know if I can stand it. All of these things, all of these pressures and stresses and worries and fears and the overwhelmingness of life, but with your love as a banner over me. Your love, constantly washing over me, a steady stream, always flowing, always strong, over all of it. I don’t know if I can stand up under your love another moment, and I don’t know what to do with these feelings. I love you too. I just don’t know if I can cope with the purity and strength of yours. I just might break apart. Maybe just ache. But maybe break into a million tiny pieces, and then what will I do?

But, I don’t want you to stop. Please stay loving me in a steady stream.

Jumbled thoughts and prayers...

It's midnight, Lord. I should go to bed, you know I should.

I feel so tired that I don't quite feel well, and I know why it is. Today you gave me such a wonderful blessing! A surprise that I had no idea was coming! You are so gracious and perfect, and I love your timing!

Today I discovered that you have opened my womb and begun to form a precious new person inside me! What a wonderful God you are! How I worship you, Lord! I am beyond joyful and excited, oh my heart just leaps about for joy at what you have done! My head is swimming with thoughts and feelings, and excitement and happiness top the list. But late at night is always the time when I am most susceptible to "thinking"....

I am so tired, and I know why. I know that the tiredness will get worse, and the nausea will begin. It's Saturday and I know that tomorrow my sweet lovely husband will let me lie-in. But if I think like it's a weekday tomorrow morning... then I feel nervous. I think about homeschooling the boys, tired like this, and I feel nervous. I know that in about a week I will reach the stage where morning sickness kicks in, and then I wonder how on earth I will manage, Lord.

Last time I was pregnant, school ground to a halt for 3 months while I rode the waves of morning sickness and total exhaustion. I know that other mamas do this and they are encouraging and say it's just for a season. And homeschooling allows us to be flexible. But I am nervous, Lord. I feel I can't let anything slow me down. We just got off the ground with homeschooling, and oh you know me Lord - you know how hard I find it to get organised on ANYTHING, and how I have never ever, in my own strength, managed to stick to ANYTHING that takes perseverance. There's always "something" that interrupts and I get off track again very easily. My own strength and effort isn't enough. But this time, I can't fail, Lord, I can't. I must continue with school, and I wonder how I will do that.

I praise and thank you Father, for my children! I thank you for pressing homeschooling into my heart and CALLING me to do it - ASKING it of me. And I have. And I will! As long as you still ask me to do it, I will do it with great delight, because I want to do your will, and because I LOVE it. I love not sending my children to school, I love being with them all the time, I love being the one to teach them. So I praise you for homeschooling, and the gift it is to my family.

Please help me, Lord! To get up every morning with strength and determination, and with a good attitude. To persevere and really develop character through it. How my character needs work! I know it. Thank you for this opportunity to really stretch myself. But God, I know I am going to fall FLAT on my face unless you enable me. Once I am exhausted and sick and struggling, how am I going to make meals for my family, keep some sort of lid on the laundry and housework, wipe bottoms and change 3 sets of nappies several times a day, stay on top of naps and routines around them, homeschool the children who are needing school, discipline little ones appropriately and endlessly every day, and be NICE to my children hour after hour?! How can I do it, Lord?! I know the answer - I totally can NOT. And that's what worries me. But you know I promised you I would not worry about stuff... I am trying, but it's hard when the habit is so ingrained.

I am worried that I am bleeding, and whether that means I will lose this baby, or just do my "usual" early pregnancy bleeding and all will be okay.

I am worried that I can't be a good mummy to six small children aged 7 and under.

I am worried that we will not have "enough" - money, space... our home is small and we really can't afford to move anywhere close enough to where Neil works...

I am worried that my milk will dry up too soon, and I don't want to wean either my 8-month-old OR my 2-year-old...

I am worried that I can't homeschool because I just won't be "enough".

I am worried that I am going to get a lot of flack for being pregnant again, from various sources.

I am worried that something will be wrong with my baby. I only just now started to take my pre-natal vitamins, and I took a not-safe-for-pregnancy medication once, a week or so ago.

I am worried about getting the boys out for air and exercise when I palpitate just getting up from sitting to standing, and then have to sit back down again to rest from that exertion! Lord, what shall I do?!

But. 1 Peter 5: 6-7 says this, "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

So:

I thank you that this baby is fearfully and wonderfully made! And that I am too!

I thank you that you chose to bless us AGAIN! It makes me laugh for joy every time I think of it!

I thank you that the Bible says I should not lean on my own understanding, but to TRUST in the Lord with all my heart.

I thank you that I can find so much encouragement in your Word!

I thank you that my husband is happy that we are having another baby, and my children are so excited to meet the baby already. I thank you that my husband is WONDERFUL, so supportive and lovingly helps me so much with the little ones. Thank you that he's a great daddy! Oh how you've blessed me!

I thank you that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me! I thank you that I don't HAVE to be enough - that's the whole point - because I'm NOT, and can't ever be. If I am enough, it's evidence of your power in my life, and I know that you can make me able.

I thank you that you will not call me to a task or purpose that you will not equip me to do.

I praise you that you consider me enough and love me enough to want to bless me with opportunities to refine me. This is another one of them! I am so glad to know that some serious dross is about to be burned off me in the process! :) Remind me, help me remember that, when it's hard, Lord.

Thank you for LIFE, for life growing inside me! Please help Neil and I to spend time praying together every day about each day ahead, and about our growing family. It's so hard to carve out the time, and it's easy for it to be forgotten, but it's life-giving and essential. How we NEED you Lord!!! How we need you. More than ever, I want to press into you and seek you, and find your peace when I am afraid about things.

Amen.

This is random, and I am tired, but I needed to write this prayer, so I could sort out the jumble that is my head tonight. A precious new baby brings me right back to my knees before God - the reason and the source, and the way forward. I need God more than I ever did! I love Him more than I ever did!

I am so blessed to be mummy to six children. I count this little one even now, so early, so in-the-balance, because he or she is HERE and alive. I just praise God, and I'm overwhelmed with His goodness to us, and His love for us. So happy! :)

I am pregnant! Expecting my sixth baby on May 23rd 2012! What a wonderful surprise! So much to look forward to, and pray about. God is so good to me!

[note: please do not mention at Facebook if you know me there, yet! Thanks! :) ]

Link to a breath of fresh air :)

I rarely link posts at my blog (though I probably would do if I was writing here more often! I READ tons of wonderful blog posts regularly, but it's my own blog that gets neglected!). After my post yesterday, the timing was SO perfect for me to read Sherry's post at Large Family Mothering. It just really uplifted me to read it at this particular time, so I wanted to link it here, for my own reference as well as anyone else's.

But, not too bad today! Less yelling than usual, and I'm remembering the verse about "a soft answer". Thanks for the comments on yesterday's post - I so appreciate them! xxx

A soft answer...

"A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Proverbs 15:1

Oh, chip away at me on this one, Lord, because you know I need a chisel more than a gentle moulding here! Help me talk KINDLY to my children at all times, ALL times, because it's not right to do anything else, and in any case, a harsh word stirs up anger.

A bit disappointed with myself lately. Maybe I'm tired? Not an excuse. But something seems to be making my patience thinner than ever, any time a bookcase gets emptied out... or a child dashes in the kitchen while I go to the toilet, to mix the last of the milk with raisins, tomato ketchup, honey and custard powder... or at least two voices mingle distortingly in the high-pitched whiney nasal tone I hear every few minutes throughout the day (it seems!) to tattle on each other for something miniscule... or someone intentionally blocks the toilet AGAIN with an entire loo roll... I just lose my patience easily. Not my TEMPER so much, just patience. I get irritable, as whiney as my children (ugh!) and yell at them. Yuck.

I'm getting in a bad habit of being impatient at times - too often. I don't use soft words, and guess what? The anger level is rising in my children! I love how WISE the Bible is. The annoying thing about me is that I realise the problem, fully see the solution, and yet PERSIST in the type of behaviour I KNOW causes the problem!!!!! Aaaaargh!! >:-/ (a cross face, if that wasn't clear before now, lol!) I get myself stuck in a rut and then when I WANT to change it, I struggle terribly to do anything about it. It's like the boys provoke me to yell more than ever before, when I am actually trying to stop it! ;)

This morning - and I am NOT proud of this - I had a bad 5 minutes. Or maybe 10. Urgh. Arthur and Matthew were causing trouble and then being rude to me over their consequence. To which I, being the responsible and mature adult that I am, responded by yelling at them. And, angered, they yelled back. Seeing my mistake and the fruit of it, I - nope, don't be fooled, I was a TWIT and yelled BACK some more. Ugggghhh. *sigh* Then I picked my crying baby up off the floor and swept off upstairs to put him down for his nap (which I had been trying to do when the ridiculous arguing started in the first place - what, am I EIGHT YEARS OLD?!?!! I'm so annoyed with myself for being so childish!!!).

Whilst breastfeeding Samuel on my bed upstairs, I had time to cool off, and the more I cooled off, the more I cringed at my behaviour, and the more wretched I felt! I just kept thinking, "WHY can't I pull myself together?!" By the time Samuel was asleep, I was praying about it - a step in the right direction.

I am so helpless over all this parenting business without God. I may love being a mummy and I may have always wanted to have children instead of anything else in the world, BUT that doesn't make me a "natural" or a "super mum"! I am SO. VERY. FAR. from that mark. Naturally? I am too lazy and self-centred for parenting. I have the organisational skills of a turnip, though I love to aspire to great things. Turnip, in reality. Turnip parenting 5 children, as loving a vegetable as it might be (!!) NEEDS the power of the Holy Spirit to enable it to do the job!!! ;)

Often I pray such blando prayers that I know God hears, but I guess if they're bland, my heart isn't IN it enough? I don't know. This morning, with my sleeping baby on the bed and my children squabbling and building dens downstairs, I started a blando prayer and I guess the Holy Spirit showed up because before I knew it, there I was on my knees on the bedroom floor, crying, my WHOLE HEART in my words, "I CAN'T DO IT, LORD! I NEED YOU, LORD!" And oh how I meant it! I prayed for a while, and then got up, with ZERO confidence in myself (nervous to even go downstairs, lol!) but, comfortingly, with every confidence in Christ who strengthens me (and He does! Hooray!), and went back to my children. Matthew had emptied the bookshelves over the floor. He did not get lunch until he put them back. I did not yell! :)

I did yell some more this afternoon, but there were SO very many occasions where someone small would scream in my face about something, and my anger would rise and then suddenly a small word pressed into the back of my eyes, "soft..." and I did not yell. I got down to his level, took his hands in mine, and used a softer voice than my normal speaking voice to explain that screaming is not nice, Mummy doesn't like it, and he needs to apologise to me for it. The DIFFERENCE! Immediately, soft calm eyes looked into mine, and with a relaxed body, the little person nodded and said, "Sorry Mummy." Quiet, relaxed, and OH SO RIGHT in my spirit. So easy to move onto cuddles, and it's exactly as I WANT to parent them. I do, sometimes. I just seem to yell more lately, and I want to get back to NEVER yelling. It is not in my own strength that I was able to do that this afternoon (trust me, I have tried it in my own strength and not managed), and I am so grateful to God for the glimpse of the fruit that can be gained from absolutely submitting to Him in my mothering, and not allowing myself to go my own way. I just haven't been turning to God enough recently, and I need to change that.

Tomorrow the challenge begins all over again, because I'm just as weak and wretched for the task tomorrow as I was this morning. But I have hope! I have Jesus! And so long as I submit to Him, I KNOW He will enable me. The task I am carrying out is the very one He has called me to, Himself! So He is sure to enable me, if I am leaning on Him and seeking Him.

I love what I do! I love it so very much. I love Jesus more, though. :)

Keeping up....

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9

I need some sort of cuckoo clock with this verse popping out every 5 minutes around the clock. Seriously.

I am really struggling lately with carrying out this verse in my role as Mummy to my five little men! I know what the "good" is that I am meant to be doing. It varies depending on the age and personality of each child, and the season of parenting I’m in. Right now one of my biggest sources of weariness is Benjamin’s shrill screaming tantrums that he gives us many times each day, lasting at least 20 minutes straight and often longer. He screams and won’t be calmed down by anything (or nothing at all!), until he’s a quivering, crimson mess with hair sweated through to the tips. It’s honestly worse than a pneumatic drill for decibels and distraction! The boys are fed up with it, I’m fed up with it, and we can’t hear ourselves or get anything done. I should have nipped it in the bud earlier than this, but it started a couple of weeks or so before I got a kidney stone which has led me a merry dance for a month now – finally resolved last week though (SO THANKFUL!!!) and I already have half a post drafted about it, for my records. Will finish it and post it soon! So Neil went back to work today, having had to look after the little ones for WEEKS on holiday time from work, and now I must deal with the issues at hand!

Mucho training is needed in so many areas! I’m not feeling defeated or overwhelmed by the task, for once! I am digging deep into Scripture and finding strength where I should always be looking for it in the first place (*sigh* I am such a s-l-o-w learner!). But off the top of my head, here’s a rundown of the things I know I need to tackle imminently. Not sure of a game plan yet, but I know God will help me with that:

Benjamin’s tantrums

Teaching sweet attitude and first time obedience to Benjamin. These are biggies, but bare essentials, and I left it WAY late to even attempt these with the others (with continuing consequences). I know from other wise mamas online that I have ALREADY left it late with Benji, though he's only just two. Onward, though! :)

Teaching sweet attitude and first time obedience to Nathan. Oh, and Matthew and Arthur while I’m at it. *sigh* I really wish I had been diligent in the earlier years. I am ongoingly tackling this with the boys now, but it’s endless and usually seems fruitless, and can become extremely wearing – hence the need for the cuckoo clock as mentioned above!

Well I thought I would have a load of things on a list, and there really IS so very much to do, but now that I am looking at my list, I can see that ALL of it springs from the basic need for my children to obey me and have a good attitude about it, 99% of the time. A tall order, yes, but I am not a slave driver in my approach, just firm. And I know that little children can and do learn these things when taught diligently, so I have hope and press on.

Sometimes though, I struggle with working Galatians 6:9 through. I start to question myself on things when I'm tired and three children are crying at once, and I'm not talking about having a quiet cry about something for a few minutes! ;) I'm talking about one irate tantrumming child, one hungry or tired baby crying to be picked up, and one child who is angry because I'm the world's worst mummy right at that moment to him, for a temporary specific reason. Loud, emotionally loaded, and incessant crying! In that moment, when I am unsure which child to deal with first, and I choose (for example) to continue consistent discipline with my toddler who, when reminded that we don't throw XYZ toy, yelled at me, "No way! I corn lis-nin!" (I can't listening, otherwise translated as, "I'm not listening!", and yes, Benjamin has picked this up from one of two older brothers who no longer say this after what feels like months of continuous discipline over it) and needs to apologise before anything else happens (breathe, long sentence!), I end up second-guessing whether I'm doing the right thing, in the midst of the moment. I can't think straight sometimes, and my efforts seem to make things worse sometimes, and I think that really I'm just totally GUESSING at the "good", the RIGHT thing to do, sometimes. Then I think of the verse, about how we should not grow weary of doing GOOD, and I think, "But what if the GOOD I'm persevering with ISN'T the GOOD I think it is?!" What if I'm doing it all wrong?! I want to persevere with good as a parent, but then I have moments where I come unstuck and have NO idea what is good and what isn't!

I really want to reap a harvest with my children! Basically as little ones, they have two commands in the Bible to learn and follow, and we learned this verse as our first memory verse last year:

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honour your father and your mother, which is the first commandment with a promise; that it may go well with you, and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." Ephesians 6:1-3

They need to learn to obey us. Obeying means doing as they are asked:

Immediately
Cheerfully
Completely

And they need to learn to honour us, which means respecting us, not being rude or answering back or having a bad attitude towards us.

There are too many families online for me to even link to (though I should give it a go sometime for the encouragement of others who might read this), who raise their children in this way from a YOUNG age, kindly and lovingly, and these children are a delight to be around, well adjusted, joyful and confident. Family life is much more calm and less chaotic than ours, and I know I need to press on in these areas to see this kind of fruit. I wish I had learned this stuff earlier! Now that we're working on it, and have been for quite a long time - a year or more? - it is hard going! I don't know whether that's just normal and you just press on? Or if it's evidence that things need tweaking to be effective and lead to good fruit and a more harmonious family life?! I have no idea what I'm doing, but for the first time I feel like I am aiming in the right direction. I was always so frustrated before, having no idea but ALSO not knowing what my goals should be or why! I honestly feel like the most DENSE parent out there, lol! I know every parent has their moments, but I feel such a twit, as far as parents go! ;) I feel like people knowing about this would be rolling their eyes saying, "And she's got FIVE?!?!"

Well, this post was really to just sort of to write about my journey of cluelessness, um PARENTING, haha! So that I don't forget, and so that I might even learn from it, and look back someday and go, "Ahhh, that's where I turned the corner!!" or, "Ahhh, THAT'S where I should have tried X, Y or Z instead! Oh dear!", hehe!

I just wish I had some sort of accountability from WISE WISE persons, who actually do know all the answers from experience, and who have set about raising their children exactly the way I want to, and who can tell me if I'm on track, or veering waaaay off course. I know that God is my source. I pray about it a lot. But often still feel a bit lost on what I should be doing. I do feel that God leads me to wise advice when I ask him to help me and give me wisdom though. If it's of God, it's nearly always confirmed around that same time with a Bible verse. Ahhh, I don't know! Sometimes I just feel so lost in what I'm trying to do that I don't know what I'm doing, HOW to do it, or even if I should be doing it at all!! I think this is a better way of describing the way I was feeling when I wrote my last blog entry in JUNE (gasp, way too long ago!) about having so many children that I didn't know what to do!

It really isn't the number of children, although I am noticing that having more children forces me to face up to things that I must deal with as a parent but which I could (and probably would, knowing myself!) let slide if I was under less pressure with fewer children. It's the parenting of them and not knowing how, or what I'm doing. The number of children means I have more plates spinning, which is a bit overwhelming sometimes.

You know what? On my worst days where I feel the most overwhelmed, I never, not once, ever feel like I have "too many" children. I have five wonderful, darling, precious children. My children are all boys. I would be a rich, rich woman if I had a pound for every time someone said the words, "All boys?!?!" to me now, lol! Ohh I've heard that one a lot. Everyone wants to know if we've been trying for a girl, or longing for a daughter. You know what? I've never been more thrilled to have five boys and NO daughters. I would love a daughter. I'm girly. I want hair to French plait and pink glittery crafts and ohhhh, girly bedding and sweet little sundresses!!! It's possible to feel that way without the slightest pang whatsoever when I think of my houseful of little boys and the distinct possibility of always being the only girl in my houseful of boys! :)

I love having boys! I love having babies! I love having children. I would joyfully and gratefully welcome more of them, if the Lord was pleased to bless us that way. Lately, with my health having a "moment" with the kidney stone, losing a ton of weight, and generally getting run down - it's been a bit scary at times for me. And that has made me nervous of pregnancy and more babies. I get panicky and think, what about my body?!! Will it cope?!! But when I fix my eyes on Jesus and I trust God with my body, and my womb, and thus my babies, the fear evaporates. Slowly, sometimes! ;) But it does. And that's kind of a marker for me to know what's the right thing to do. Fear isn't of God, and looking at my fertility in a "worldly" way, for want of a better description, worrying about the physical side of things, whether it would be daft and overwhelm us, and alllll the other possible concerns with having more babies - none of those bring me peace. The only peace to be gained for me there is taking control of it all by preventing the chance of any more babies, and that's the same kind of feeling of "peace" I used to get when I was a teenager, deathly afraid of vomiting and carrying around a pack of tummy pills in my bag. They were my security because if I felt anxious and queasy for any reason, I would PANIC. But if I had my pills - just to peek in and look at them in my bag, a sense of calm would come over me. They were there if I needed them.

There's a great verse in the Bible that a Christian counsellor once shared with me that transformed my thinking over many things in my life at that time:

"But now, all you who light fires and provide yourselves with flaming torches, go, walk in the light of your fires and of the torches you have set ablaze. This is what you shall receive from my hand: You will lie down in torment." Isaiah 50:11

I light my own fires when I try to control things myself, when I make my own security by setting things up just so. It's freeing and releasing to give control of BIG things to God - big things rightfully belong in God's control anyway. I know from experience that it's torment to try to hang on to control of such things myself. Greater strength is needed to keep hold all the time, and greater is the anxiety over it. Letting go is NOT my forte! ;) I struggle with that immensely, BUT it's worth it. The feeling of worry over babies and the future, and wondering about preventing more of them felt EXACTLY like that previous experience of trying to control things, feeling a sort of sense of peace, but that peace just masking the torment. So I am not going to do that.

Well, I could write all night, but it's getting late and Samuel is now stirring awake for a feed. I love that sweet little baby! I have so much to write and so many photos to post! I really will try to get to it soon! I'm just glad to start a catch-up on thoughts and things - important for future reference. Back soon, I hope! :)

Huge boy-related update!

So. Very. Bad! Probably my longest break from updating my blog yet! And completely unintentional - just time ran away from me and I didn't get around to updating. I can't believe the last time I updated was mid-August! Now it's mid-October, and I have a LOT to catch up on here! I will have to TRY to make it as brief and bullet-point-y as possible, otherwise I'll do myself a disservice and stay up too late (yet again!).

Let's see, last time I updated, Benjamin was 13 months old. He has changed a lot since the summer, even though we're not really all that far into autumn (or so it feels!). At the end of August I finally gave him his first haircut! I was so nervous to do it because I just knew he would constantly be whipping his head this way and that, and trying to brush away the scissors or comb with his hands. So in the end, I nursed him to sleep on my bed for his nap a little later than usual so that he was REALLY tired, and as soon as he was asleep, I cut his hair while he lay on my bed! He was so fast asleep, he didn't even stir when I rolled him onto his sides to do the sides of his hair, or even right onto his front so I could see if the back was even, hehe! He had no idea he had a haircut and I kept all the cut parts of his hair between thumb and forefinger so that it didn't sprinkle all over the bed or him, as I cut it. I was pretty pleased with it, for a first haircut, and a lying-down one at that! Here's his "before" photo the day before (looking rather serious demolishing the clean laundry pile!):

And here he is an hour or so after waking from his "haircut" nap! Cute little manny!

His hair is ready for another cut now though. It's over his ears and down to over his eyebrows, so I need to get brave and do it again! All the boys are really needing haircuts at the moment, especially Arthur and Matthew, who had theirs done last before Nathan and Benji did. Must get around to that soon before I forget what their eyes look like, hehe!

Benjamin's personality and character have just been SHINING through over these last couple of months - more so each week that passes, it seems. I just love this stage of baby/toddlerhood! I am SO enjoying getting to know him - and he's a special little man for sure! Different yet again from any of the other boys. Benjamin is so self-assured and confident. He's very like Arthur in that respect, though he has also had the crying with strangers thing that most babies do (but which Arthur never did). He is still big for his age, and beginning to close the gap on tiny Nathey-noo, who remains as teeny as they come for HIS age! ;) He is verbal and physical, almost equally, assertive and lightning quick to pick up anything new and retain it for next time. He is absolutely on a level with his brothers, never mind the age difference, lol! No bossing this baby around - he holds his own and we are having to teach him no hitting, and enjoying some pretty assertive tantrums lately when he does not get his own way! He's such a strong little character, and I am so very excited to learn more about Benjamin as he grows older! I have a feeling he is going to be very challenging and VERY rewarding to parent and teach. He is also affectionate, cuddly and cute as a button! He snuggles frequently, still breastfeeds on demand during the day, and has recently nightweaned without too much trauma. NOT his choice, but necessary now, in preparation for the new baby! He has dropped to one nap a day, and on quite a lot of occasions has gone without one altogether. He gets too tired that way but still manages the day okay, and goes out like a light at bedtime whilst breastfeeding. His one nap takes place late morning at the moment, which is fine as it doesn't alter bedtime!

Benjamin is all about his FOOD! So different to my last toddler! He has been that way from the start though - my only baby to never choke on my fast let-down as a newborn. I remember being so surprised about how he somehow knew to go very still and let his mouth fill, and then swallow - how he knew to do that and never choked?! He also nursed without a break the night he was born. He didn't sleep or come off the breast once! Again that was a first for one of my babies! NOW I know him better and it makes perfect sense, lol! He can wake from a deep sleep and be eating lunch or breakfast (still swaying!) in his booster seat within 60 seconds! And eat WELL too. Nathan can't eat when he's sleepy, and sometimes it takes an hour or so for his tummy to wake up enough to eat. Benjamin is the exact opposite! If it's vaguely near a meal time, or he sees the kitchen gate open, even if we're still carrying him downstairs from his nap, he will immediately point and make urgent sounds towards the kitchen. He can eat a full meal right from sleep. He is beginning to get fussier about what he eats, as they all have after they turn one, but he eats plenty. He enjoys lunch and breakfast the most, and is picky in general about dinner options. I never know whether he'll eat it or throw it. *sigh* We are working on the throwing thing (he knows full well that he's not to do it, even at this age, believe me!). He loves cream cheese sandwiches and Nutella sandwiches, cheese of any sort, yoghurt and raisins, etc. He has supersonic hearing and can hear us quietly mention the word "Smarties" or "cake" even in hushed tones with loud play around him, I kid you not. He will drop whatever he's doing and appear at the kitchen gate looking hopeful, saying, "Gake?" or "Mar-bee?" (that's "Smartie", just so you know!). He adores the occasional treat of either one of those things. Right now Matthew is still potty training (starting to poo in the toilet, yaaaaaay!) and getting Smarties as rewards. Benjamin gets very upset about not receiving a Mar-bee every time Matthew gets one! ;) Full-on tantrum style!

His words are uncountable now. He didn't slow down with his talking at all while he learned to walk. He's walking EVERYWHERE and practising speed walking round and round in circles. He walks well in shoes outside, has begun to break into a funny little bobbly speed-walk in the house as he tries his very best to run about with the boys, and can pivot and dart very quickly in different directions during chasing games. HOW this boy loves to be chased! :) He's adventurous and a very typically rough-and-tumbly boy, and delights in being tickled, eaten (playfully of course!) or chased. He squeals and giggles the whole time. He entertains the other boys SO much now. They often just take a seat at the side of the living room and watch him for like 15 minutes at a time, just laughing and laughing at his antics and encouraging him to do more! They love watching him speed-walk in circles, crawl on hands and feet shovelling the ground with his forehead (I know, he's a funny one!), and pretend to spin around till he's dizzy by standing on the spot, swinging his torso about and shaking his head like crazy, hehehe! He's such an entertaining little boy - I love seeing it all emerge and the boys are having so much fun with him. He likes an audience, and the audience likes him right back!

He makes lots of animal noises now - my favourite is the sheep because instead of a flat "baa" sound like my other little ones used to make, he actually does such a cute little chipmunky "baa" with a tiny tremor to the sound, to make a real bleat!!! Sooooooo adorable, and I'm frustrated that I still haven't managed to catch it on camera! My camera batteries died (the small one that can take video) after his birthday and it has taken me till September to recharge them and use it again! Tsk! Anyway, he's fascinated with it and stops whatever he was doing to reach out and touch the camera or walk towards it, so it's hard to capture him doing cute things! I did manage to capture him walking at the beginning of October (a couple of weeks ago). I put a few little snippets of him walking together into one video. It was QUIET here while he was walking. One of the snippets was taken while Arthur and Matthew were upstairs playing (they are increasingly being allowed to now, so long as they don't get into mischief) so it was very quiet downstairs with just Nathey and Benjamin! The other times the boys were being unnaturally quiet - don't get any false impressions with this video! ;) They were reading and Nathan was playing with the baby boy doll that I dug out again recently. Benjamin LOVES that doll and gives it kisses constantly, calling it "beh-bee" (which he also says now when he pats my ever-expanding bump - so cute!). Here's the video clip to show you how well he was walking only a month after starting. I posted this one at Facebook already, so some of you have already seen it:

I so rarely see him crawl any more! :( He crawls when he's playing on the floor with the boys, but then so do they if it's easier to stay down there with the cars and Duplo and things rather than keep getting up and walking a foot or so and then getting back down on all fours again! ;)

Here are some more photos of Benjaminny from September:

With his brothers just before bedtime on the "temporary sofa"! We got rid of our sofa and armchair at last - part of my plan to maximise the space in the living room and improve the living conditions in there too, hehe! In the meantime we put a single futon mattress down and covered it with a blanket, so the boys could sit along it to "read" stories, as they like to at random many times a day. Benjamin has really started to join in with this kind of activity and turns the pages in a book excitedly, squealing out the few words he knows for the pictures he sees as he goes along, gasping with surprise at things, and pointing enthusiastically! It's so sweet! He wasn't doing that in this picture, but I love it because this is a snapshot of Benjamin's personality. He's so happy and mischievous and gleeful just about all the time, full of enthusiasm for life. I LOVE this little boy who is emerging from my baby boo! :)

Yes, he loves Nathan's monkey. LOVES him. Nathey is very gracious and lets him cuddle Monkey, kiss Monkey, hold Monkey, etc most of the times he wants to. If Nathan is crying about something, Benjamin will toddle over to him looking so concerned and serious, and bring Monkey with him, trying to press him into Nathan's lap or hands. Beyond precious, I tell you. I love seeing their hearts for each other even while they're still so little. Except when they're being mean to each other, of course! ;)

A random few photos of Benjamin playing - loving lining cars up and pushing them around like his brothers:

Something he does a LOT - seeing something out of the window and pointing (he uses his pointy finger much more now though. A month ago he would use his whole hand to point). He usually sees birds or cars, and points, saying, "CAR!" or "BUR!" and engaging me with this very look. He will repeat and hold his position as many times as necessary for me to actually pay attention! ;)

Playing with a sleepsuit on his head, for some reason! Another thing the boys love to see him doing! ;)

In September we went to Box Hill in Surrey for the day with Neil's brother and sister. They live fairly near to us and we all drove to one central point to meet up and enjoy each other's company and a nice walk. The weather turned out to be lovely, and the boys were very excited to spend time with their cousins (Ella who is now 5, and Emily who is 2). We had a lovely time, though I couldn't walk far without my pelvis hurting and my bump feeling too tight, so I sat down and took some pictures. I tried to walk with everyone because I didn't want to be a party pooper and sit out from all the fun activity! That evening I didn't feel well and had closely spaced regular Braxton Hicks contractions for hours. So I am not being very active now in my pregnancy (31 weeks now already!!!!) because if I do then I regret it - my uterus seems quite easily irritable this pregnancy and I've had other evenings after doing too much in the house since then, where I've had strong (even painful) Braxton Hicks contractions coming ever 2-3 minutes for many hours straight. So I am having to be careful and not be too active.

Here are some of the photos I took at Box Hill! :)

I loved these next couple of photos! The little ones were learning about bugs and insects under logs and bark. My BIL would roll back big logs and the kids would crowd round to peer at the little creatures scuttling underneath. They peeled back the rotting bark on a log, and I took a few photos. I found it so funny to watch them, because all my boys were, although fascinated, rather squeamish! They stood at arms length or poked with sticks, while the girls casually scooped creepy crawlies onto their hands and examined them on their palms in a very relaxed manner, hehe!

Little Benjamin sat in the pushchair for the walk part of the outing. When we stopped to look at things, he fidgetted, so I gave him my water bottle to keep him busy for a minute. (Oooh, Samuel has hiccups! They are blipping away quite sharply in my pelvis on my left side! I can't WAIT to meet this sweet little one!!) I took some photos of him sitting there with my water bottle:

There was only a tiny bit left....

But he soon figured out something he could do with it....

"Uh-oh Mummy...."

Sweet cheeky little treasure! :)

Little Nathan having a serious discussion with his uncle! They were like that chatting for such a long time, and looked so relaxed together that I couldn't resist a photo after a while.

My sweet little 2-year-old! :)

I'm trying to think how Nathan is doing - there must be some news to report since August! He seems so tiny and young still, MUCH more so than my previous 2 1/2 year olds have done. He carries his beloved Blankie and Monkey everywhere around the house, and is very attached to them, especially Blankie (a yellow cot-sized flannelette sheet). We have lots of Blankies so that's a relief, and they're easy to come by, but only one Monkey! We never take Monkey out of the house for this reason - he stays behind to sleep a lot, because he's the type of monkey who needs lots of sleep. ;) Nathan is fine with this, thankfully!

Nathey talks on a level with the older boys, uses long words and complicated sentences, and pronounces things well and clearly. But his voice is SO TEENY and chipmunky still!! I LOVE this about him! Any question we ask that requires a detailed answer (ones which start with "Why...?" for example) is met with a response starting with, "That's because...." and then a long explanation :) A month or so ago I noticed him talking with ease using various tenses in the same discussion, and I can't remember that from before so perhaps he had newly "got" that concept? He was talking about "he was" and "they were" and "we will". He has used all of those for a long time, but often he would get the context wrong or the tense wrong, and then suddenly started using them correctly this summer.

He has finally finished getting his two-year-old molars (no trauma whatsoever, weirdly!) and now has all of his baby teeth. He still drools and chews his fingers though, for some reason! He does not bite his fingernails, which his older brothers were doing by his age, so hopefully he won't at all! He is cute and cuddly and affectionate, and has the squishiest little round tummy I ever did squeeze! He can be very serious and if he sees other children messing about and having "silly" fun out and about, he will go very serious and quiet and not want to join in. He tells me they are being silly! At Box Hill, he was very taken with my BIL (Neil's sister's husband) and sat on his lap for ages looking at a stick collection they'd made, while the others ran about playing football and things. Neil's brother was resting on the grass with his hat over his eyes, and I heard my BIL whisper to Nathan that he could go up to Uncle Ian and tickle him if he wanted to! Nathan's face was such a picture, hehehe! He looked HORRIFIED at such an idea and insisted that it wouldn't be right to do such a thing! Funny sweet little boy! :) Of course right then, Arthur and Ella (the cheekiest pair of 5-year-olds I ever did see) ran up and BIL repeated the same suggestion to them. Their eyes lit up and within 5 seconds (no exaggeration), they were both sitting on poor Uncle Ian's tummy, working as a team to gleefully tickle him to death! Nathan watched them looking very unimpressed, hehe!

On the other hand, he is often the silliest boy in my house on any given day when we're home. He initiates silly games and puts on silly voices, does silly walks to make the boys laugh, tackles family members and plays lots of rough-and-tumble with his brothers, so I have no idea why he's sometimes so serious in other settings!

He is increasingly stubborn and tests the boundaries a lot lately, though it's just a stage he's reached more than anything else. We most definitely don't put up with that, but I can see that it's a stage more than emerging personality, if that makes sense. Nathan is very laid-back and quite shy. He still cries and freaks out if anyone unfamiliar approaches him to talk or ask him to do something he doesn't want to do. He is finally perfectly happy with absolutely anyone in our own home - door-to-door salesmen, family members, friends visiting that he has never met before, etc. But out and about it's different. We went to the dentist this week and he had a humongous melt-down when it came to his turn. We had been preparing him for ages, reading stories like "Topsy and Tim go to the dentist" (which he loves - he loves all the Topsy and Tim books!) and he knew a lot about what to expect. He watched me have a check-up, and then Matthew and Arthur being very good and calm having their check-ups (no cavities, yay!) and then when the focus went on him he couldn't handle it, poor lovey. He screamed like he was terrified, even sitting on my lap, and covered his mouth with both hands, crying that he just wanted to get out of here! So, no check-up for Nathan. Hopefully when we go back for another round of check-ups in 6 months he will be in a better place to allow that kind of thing! We took all the boys to the opticians for their first eye-tests today, and Nathan did the same thing there too, so we had to abandon ship for his appointment. Benjamin, on the other hand, walked right up to the optometrist, engaged him with babble, pointed excitedly at various things in the room and tried to say the words for them, and gasped with eager excitement when the guy handed him a little vision test card! He stared at it with bugging eyes for a moment, held in his little hands, and then looked up at him and said, "Guh! Doh! Gih-GUH!" If only he had the words to communicate, he would SO have taken an eye test today, lol! He's so confident and enthusiastic, and wants to try EVERYTHING and engage everybody. Soooo in contrast to little Nathey, it's funny. Not always ha-ha funny either - sometimes I feel a bit sad for Nathan because I don't want him to be overshadowed by bold brothers embracing life, both older and younger, while he struggles somewhat. I hope he doesn't find it difficult to see Benjamin really stepping out in this way these last few weeks.

I'm so grateful to my sweet online friend, Grace, for blogging about one of her boys' eye appointments, and encouraging others to get their little ones' eyes checked and not wait! I had not really given it much thought until then, and I made appointments for them right away after I read her post. I'm thankful that Arthur and Matthew have healthy eyes and good eyesight for now! They are both slightly long-sighted, as the optometrist told me that young children naturally are until their eyes stop growing around age 8. They are both NOT as long-sighted as he would expect to see at their ages though, so he feels that it's likely they will end up short-sighted before their teens. I fully expected that because both Neil and I are really short-sighted and needed glasses around age 10-12 for the first time.

The only slight bummer was that it seems as though Matthew may well be colour blind. My brother is colour blind (red/green) and my mum and her sister are carriers (it's carried on the X-chromosome) - my cousin is colour blind too. Soooo all this time I have never known whether I picked the X from my mum that has the colour blindness gene on it, or the other one! And then having all these BOYS (boys are the ones affected, girls are only carriers unless they have a colour-blind father AND a carrier mother, which is rare), I worried that if I had that gene they would ALL end up colour blind or something! But, Arthur knew 11 colours with ease by 19 months old so I felt pretty sure he was not. Matthew was much later to be sure about his colours, but he can still tell me what's green and what's red without trouble. But then again, so can my brother.... Nathan has picked up his colours easily and younger than Matthew did, so I'm HOPING he is not colour blind, but it doesn't follow that he wouldn't be just because he learned his colours well or early. I had let myself become too confident that I hadn't got my mum's X-chromosome with the colour blindness gene on it. So it was sort of sad today when Matthew quickly identified the numbers on those bubble pictures when they were blue and yellow, but could not seem to see them on the red and green pictures :( The optometrist switched to mazes instead of numbers, for Matthew to trace his finger on (red maze on a green background, for example), and he couldn't follow the line :( The optometrist said that he'd see them again in 2 years and by then he would be able to be absolutely sure about whether Matthew is colour blind or not, but he suspects he is.

Soooo I did get the gene to carry after all, and I have FIVE little boys, all of whom have a 50% chance of being colour blind. They either take my affected X-chromosome, or the other one. Thankfully Arthur is not colour blind! :) I so hope Nathan, Benjamin and Samuel somehow defy the odds and can see colour normally. My brother reminded me on the phone tonight that out of all the genetically inherited "defects", colour blindness is the BEST one to have! ;) He says you never know any different, and the only thing it affects is career choices (same as the optometrist told me) - Matthew can not be an electrician, and he would find graphic design tricky, but otherwise it should not affect anything. Bennie has always asked us which crayon or pencil is green and which is red, if he can't tell. He can tell red from green but it's the subtler shades that he can't tell apart. Anyway, it's NOT really bad news at all. I wish he could be an electrician if he wanted to! Silly thought, but no mama wants to think her child must be restricted in any way, however slight.

They were such good boys at the dentist and opticians! Matthew was so brave and went first when Arthur would not at the dentist. I saw that he didn't want to, but suddenly he straighted himself up, puffed out his chest and marched up to the chair and climbed onto it! He made the decision to be brave and DO it, and I was so proud of him!

What else with the boys? It's getting way too late and this post is already too long, but I have just got SO much to write about, and I don't want to miss stuff in case I have another long break without meaning to! I need all this precious stuff recorded somewhere so that I don't forget it! Oh - Nathan has stopped napping in the day. He really still needs a nap. REALLY. But he resists it a little - not a lot - and then when he has a nap he stays up too late in the evening not able to sleep, and the accumulated sleep over the 24-hour period is actually less in total than when he doesn't nap and conks out within minutes of going to bed at 6.30 or 7pm! He only naps for an hour or so when he does, but then he's up at least 2 hours past his bedtime as a result, and gets up at the same early time as always in the morning. So we are just avoiding putting him down for a nap these days. If he asks and it's a good time for him to nap, he will go and take one, but that doesn't happen often. More often, when he DOES nap, it's during the afternoon where he lays himself down on the futon in the living room with his Monkey and Blankie, and falls asleep. Or while I'm reading him stories - again in the afternoon when he's tired. He IS too tired in the afternoon without a nap, and can get kind of cranky, but he generally doesn't fall asleep and manages okay. He sleeps better at night without the nap.

The first week or so that he did not regularly take a nap, he was pretty cranky and had lots of meltdowns. That week we were undertaking some big projects in the house like storing or laying laminate floor (that I won second hand and CHEAP therefore!) on eBay, or switching the boys from the smaller bedroom to the bigger one (I'm in the smaller one with Benjamin now) in preparation for Samuel's arrival and so that Benjamin can move in with the bigger boys soon too. The 3 older boys and Neil spent TWO WEEKS sleeping down on the living room floor on their mattresses while the whole house was in horrible disarray:

I did not cope with this at ALL well, hormonally speaking, and it's the only time in my whole pregnancy that I have had some major hormonal sobbing and crying, and feeling unwell and contracting regularly in the evenings. MUCH better once we'd finally got the floor laid with help from a sweet school friend of mine and her very DIY-handy boyfriend! And the boys' room sorted, of course, so that they could move back upstairs at night! :) So it was very hard for Nathan to get his naps while all that went on, and it turned out that he could manage the day okay and sleep well at night, so we ended up keeping him on no naps. I sometimes think we should encourage him to take naps again, as he really does need to sleep most days.... But the effects are just that he gets less sleep overall, so... Anyway, those first couple of weeks were quite an adjustment for him. He would have hour-long meltdowns in the afternoon, poor boy, and then fall asleep mid-tantrum or mid-snack. I sooo felt for him! But instead of falling back into his nap routine with great relief once everything settled down, he seemed to adjust and do better at night for it. Here are a few photos of Nathan struggling to adjust in those first couple of weeks:

Asleep mid-snack :)

At the table after tantrumming for one whole very very very long hour about the content of his sandwiches. *sigh*

Precious little lovey! I was reading him stories (he brought me a huge pile, something that he does many times a day) and when I finished he was fast asleep in my arm with his head on my shoulder! Neil took photos :) I love this photo. My hair wasn't washed and the floor was literally covered from wall to wall with toys and clothes and whatnot. The kitchen was in an even worse state, and oh probably fifty other things that needed serious attention. But here - THIS - here is what counts. Not the house. Not my hair. Cherishing the moment with my little children while I still have them with me. How I love it, and how I'll miss it when it's over. I'm so glad of this photo to serve as a reminder and a sweet memory all in one:

I have so much more to write about! I haven't posted photos of the changes we've made in the house yet, and there's plenty of that happening! I'm excited about it, because finally, FINALLY, we are actually dealing with the clutter we've always lived with, and down-sizing things, and storing things more efficiently, etc. I am so relieved! I so want to write about it in more detail, and post photos (which I haven't taken yet!) - you can see the new laminate floor in the video of Benjamin walking though. I also really want to write about school, though we've had a frustrating break that was not intended due to the aforementioned huge upheaval in the house. Matthew has not even started school yet and the autumn term for children his age who go out to school is already half over!! (I must not compare, I must not compare, I must not compare.... but it's so hard not to) I had so much I wanted to be doing with them over the autumn before we have a 2-month break when Samuel is born. I have lots of thoughts and feelings about it that I wanted to just sort of, get out there. And LOTS more. Neil is still unemployed - no income here for 7 months and counting now. We are trusting God! Neil is stressing about it somewhat, understandably, but I feel peace about it. And I'm so grateful that he's home to help me so very much, as he does.

I must update my pregnancy blog - I'm getting behind there too!

I made a decision to give my heart to Jesus, to live my life for him, 15 years ago this very evening, and since I'm here on October 15th writing my blog, I just had to mention it! I'm so very grateful to God for the grace and mercy He pours out on me every single day. He is so patient with me! I am as stubborn, childlike and tantrummy as my own children and He is the most patient, loving Father to me. I go my own way and take my own path way too often. I have so much that I want to work on and change in my life, but even so I am happy. God has called me to a work that He already prepared my heart to long for and desire from childhood, so I am HAPPY and glad and thankful that He has brought it to fulfilment! I love being Mummy. I'm in awe of God's blessing, and of the sweet little ones He has seen fit to bless me with - even me?! I am in His hands and cannot be snatched away. And I love Him, love Him, love Him.

Ponderings from my heart on adoption...

I have no idea why I am opening blogger to "think aloud" when it distinctly feels like this is sort of thing in a personal or spiritual journal, or something, instead. I know that blogger saves as you go, and I don't have to post anything that I don't want to, when it comes to it. And I might "think" nothing! I can't sort out my thoughts so perhaps nothing will happen.

My head really hurts tonight. I'm at the end of a bad cold and my sinuses are a bit messed up, and it has been warm today (which I am notoriously really BAD at, and often get headaches once it's over, say, 20 degrees (68F)!! ;) )

I'm just wondering... how I'm going to manage? A pointless musing because I already know that God will enable me. But I wonder about the stuff that is as yet unknown (to me), and how I'll manage that, on top of this?

Today I have had another one of the increasingly frequent pulls to my heart (from God, no mistaking Who it's from) about adoption. These pulls are like labour, now I have stopped to think about it. They have been coming for a while, at first just little twinges - who knew if it meant anything. Then more of the same, making me start to think, "Hmmm..." Then ever increasing pulls, stronger and lasting longer. I can't remember in terms of an actual time scale how long these have been going on, or how long ago the "real deal" pulls started - the ones where I began to KNOW that God means us to adopt a child who needs a mummy and daddy, one day. I did not need to dwell too heavily on WHEN, because it just wasn't urgent yet. These pulls are now coming closer and closer together, and hurt MUCH more when they arrive. There is more urgency to them. They linger longer on my heart and invade my thoughts and that time when I am supposed to have fallen asleep an hour ago when I got into bed. The lastest few that I've had (recent, including today's) have made something in my torso actually ache and throb, and I have been unable to hold back the tears for children who have nobody, who are like my little boys in age but who have NO-body to hold them and love them and comfort them when they are scared or in pain. Some of them are accustomed to it because they don't know any different, but inside they are dying of loneliness because a child needs love and affection (from a parent) like they need air or water, to thrive. My heart is particularly burdened for children who have a disability and live in a country where when they reach the age of 4 (Matthew will be 4 in a few weeks), they are ripped without warning from their orphanage and the children and adults they have known there (though it was no great existance in the first place) and put permanently into an institution. That's the cut-off age. Four. They stay there for the rest of their lives and I don't know if I could actually bear to know the details of what it is actually like to exist in one of those places. Food, nappy changes and contact with anyone are rare things (once in 24 hours I believe). Little ones can be chained to their cots, and are never touched. Forever? I can't fathom. And there are thousands and thousands of these children, heading towards that inevitable 4th birthday milestone.

I used to read that kind of thing and sort of do a "that's so AWFUL!" shudder, and then you know, shake my head and send up a quick prayer for God to "stop letting that happen" or something, and clicky click over to a happier website. As God started to soften my heart over these things, I would still click away fairly soon, trying to put it out of my head as quickly as possible once I'd finished reading about it, because otherwise it started to feel distinctly uncomfortable to my spirit and we can't have that now, can we?

Now, God is not giving me any choice. I don't go looking for stuff, He brings it to my attention. I sometimes hesitate to look because I know it will hurt to do so, but I am drawn to all the same. I read it, and I ache and I cry, because God uses my Mummy-heart to embrace those children and long for their relief, and to hold them and hold them and hold them and hold them and eventually start to feel that broken part inside them begin to mend and come back to life, because they are no longer lost or without somebody to love them. They have a mummy and a daddy, a home and a family, forever and ever, and under the shelter of that love they can begin to grow again and maybe even thrive one day. I want to be that mummy! I cannot BEAR any children to be left in the world feeling so broken and alone while I have my own incredibly blessed children and see them grow up and go to university (if they do!), and get jobs and have families, and sit back with my hubby in our retirement years and sigh a deep sigh of satisfaction when we look at our children, and think that we have now accomplished our goal of raising children. Because NO. I don't think that is God's plan for me. For us - Neil and I. How can our parenting be complete if it doesn't include drawing orphans into our family and calling them our own? Something about the mental image of myself with greying hair enjoying a quiet home and garden just makes me feel a bit nauseous. It's not that the image isn't refreshing, or inviting, but it just feels like it's time that should still be being USED, somehow. I would rather still be raising a bunch of pre-teens and teens who would otherwise be in goodness knows what condition in a very poor country somewhere than reading Gardener's World in my deck chair and feeling somewhat older in my bones. I would rather be exhausted in my older bones due to the effects of still doing something meaningful with children! I'm sure God is able to refresh me if I am working hard for Him! How can we go on our merry way with our own not-too-small brood of biological children and ignore the many many many needy orphans in the world. There are so many that you think, "How can I even make a difference? The problem is too huge!" It may not be a huge difference to the overall numbers and the enormity of the problem, but to one or two (or however many) orphans, the difference will be life-changingly massive (didn't someone say this, or something like it? It seems like a quote I might have heard once?!). I am not implying that everyone should be doing this, or that relaxing in retirement after raising a couple of kids is wrong! I am just looking at ME, and I do not think this is right for me personally - not because I wouldn't choose it, but because I believe God is planning something different for me.

I do wonder HOW though. I have come through "Hmmm..." and the various achy stages, to the point where I am now asking God through tears, "HOW do I reach them, Lord?!" Again, not a question to really even ask, because God is fully in control, and He will lead us to the child(ren) He plans for us. I wonder how on earth we can possibly adopt when we are up to our ears in very young children and babies, another currently being knit in my womb, and no plans to prevent God from having His way in opening or closing my womb in the future. HOW can we do it, Lord? HOW? What about my children's needs? I know my family will think it's so very wrong and terribly unfair to my children. But I know that any child we might adopt in the future is ALREADY pre-destined to be our child NOW. To say, "Look, bringing your child home is going to be so unfair to your other children!" is surely crazy?! They're ALL mine! Would anyone say that about Benjamin, when he was born into my arms?! Nope. He's mine. You'd never say I shouldn't keep THAT one because the others might have a harder time of it - he's already here! In the same way, the child we are meant to adopt is already MINE in my heart, even before I know about him or her! I guess it might be harder on my children? I don't know. I don't even know when God wants us to adopt? Maybe it won't be till our current children are much older? I don't know.

I do know that right now my children NEED me - they'll never stop needing me, but right now those needs are intense. They are all so young and require me in every possible way at all times! :) I wonder HOW I can add more? Even more biological children, but more so an adopted child, I suppose. Because it means travel, and focus, and time, and then I guess major adjustments for all concerned once the child is home. I am very naiive because I actually know next to nothing about it at all. I'm just thinking out loud right now. An adopted child is sure to have issues - how could they not, with what they have been through? Which could be hard on the other children? I don't know. And a child with disabilities or health problems will surely impact the other children in the family? I don't know. But I do know that SURELY the alternative is not worth considering?! - that of leaving it and never snatching that child up and loving them and embracing them as OURS. The alternative future for the child we never bring home is unthinkable, especially for those heading for an institution.

I homeschool. That is to say, I attempt to educate my eldest child at home and, for the most part, completely flop at it. *sigh* I guess it's our first year and so on, and I HAVE been morning sick for 2 months of it, but still. We have had WAY more days of NOT doing school than I am happy with so far this year. I have a lot of plans for school, and I know I CAN do a great job for my boys, but I am not sure how to bridge the gap between the confident plans and the ACTUALITY of it. I am nervous about it, and not too confident in myself, since I am so undisciplined and struggle to improve in that area.

I have no intention of NOT homeschooling, because it's another thing that I know without a shadow of a doubt that God has called me to do. I just need to seek God and really really LEAN on Him to help me and enable me to overcome my own set of hurdles and DO the job He intends me to do. But HOW do I homeschool five children and also adopt? I guess I should not think ahead so much. I would not have a clue how I could ever even SLIGHTLY manage to cope with 3 or 4 children, at one point not so long ago, never mind five, plus maybe more, plus homeschooling, plus maybe adoption! And I can perfectly well manage to "cope" with 3 or 4 children. So I have confidence in God, but not so much in myself. Which again is pointless thinking! Because the Bible says I can do all things through Him who gives me strength! ALL THINGS! So if I have no confidence that I can, then I do not believe God's Word. I guess it's RIGHT to have no confidence in myself, because again, the Bible says it's when I am WEAK that I am strong, because of God's strength poured out upon me! So without God, I am nothing. With Him, surely I can be all things to all people, as He works out His will in my life?

I guess I have answered my own ponderings then! HOW will I? I can't. But I will because somehow God will enable me. And I'll wait - I don't know how long, but until those pulls from God move into the "second stage" and begin to give birth to an actual plan.

I feel better for the purge of thoughts! :) A bit less achy and overwhelmed about it, and more comfortable to wait on God over it all.

I have so much else I want to write about other stuff! Things the boys are doing, school (I haven't updated about anything this year!), plans, photos, just endless stuff really. I must try to update again soon!

Bible in 90 Days - Day 90!!

I DID IT!!!!!! I finished reading through the entire Bible just before 10pm tonight!! I'm sooooooooooooo proud of myself, because of how much time it has taken and how little time I have, and how behind I have been getting this past month. I didn't think I could catch up in time, but I made it - I completed the challenge in 90 days exactly!! :D

I had 3 days' readings to cover in two days (yesterday and today), so I just took all the short letters (James to Jude) in the New Testament that I hadn't read yet, for yesterday's reading, and then Revelation in its entirety today. I find Revelation quite scary, and my name is one that is written in the book of life (how incredible to be able to write that) so I shouldn't really find it scary. But I do. I can't even get my head round it!

I got so excited as I got to chapter 20 (there are 22 chapters) and my reading slowed right down because I kept getting distracted knowing there were only TWO CHAPTERS TO GO in the whole Bible! I STILL couldn't believe I would actually read the last words in the last sentence and be DONE! Even that close, I still couldn't imagine it. When I actually did read the last words, I felt absolutely euphoric! It's been the longest and most intense challenge I've taken part in that I've actually stuck at and completed - of ANY sort in my life. I thought I would probably do something like get up and do a happy dance, hehe! But instead my heart welled up with praise to God and I just lifted my hands to Him and gave Him the glory for what I had accomplished. Because it's all His! I was determined, yes, but I still couldn't have stuck at it without God motivating me and providing moments to read in my disorganised and busy days. Also the prayers and encouraging words of others (many of whom I never knew before now!) have been another provision of God to enable me to finish the challenge on time. Thank you to those who left comments here and blessed me with encouragement and prayers!! xx

I can't believe I have read the whole Bible! It's ALL in me now. I am completely changed by these last 3 months of reading. I have learned new things - too many to even assimilate myself, let alone share with others, but I need to go back and study a LOT more in much more detail.

I feel a bit at a loss of where to start or what to do next. I am praying about it, and I know God will guide me to some inspiration. I don't want to start having days where I am not in God's Word. It's a light to my path and health to my whole body, and I NEED it.

I know I am supposed to summarise at this stage - what things I got out of the Bible in 90 Days challenge, what things inspired me, what things have changed for me, and what I will take from it and where I will go from here. But right now I don't really know the answers to those questions. I feel a bit foggy of brain at this moment, and go blank when I try to think of the answers to those kinds of questions. I want to do them justice, not just say, "What did I get out of this challenge?... Uhhmm... welllll... I guess I got closer to God..." - which, don't get me wrong, would be GREAT if that was even the only thing that I got out of it! But I mean, I got SO MUCH out of it, and I just can't think of it all right now. I will try to give it some thought over the next couple of days and then come back and write a bit more about it, to finish it off.

I am just so happy!!! Thank you Lord for helping me complete the challenge on time, and thank you for your WONDERFUL Word!!! I love you more than I knew I could.

Bible in 90 Days - Day 76! And general (bite-sized!) update.

It's THE 22ND OF MARCH!!!! The challenge to read attentively every word of the entire Bible in 90 days ends on March 31st!!! Soooo close!

BUT.

I'm FIVE days behind. Urgh. I haven't written a Bible in 90 Days update for weeks, and that is approximately how long I've been struggling with being behind on my reading. I got lazy though, it's my own fault. I was sloppy at sticking to my own rules about not switching on the laptop before finishing the day's reading. For weeks I have been at least 3 days behind - never as little as two. Right now I am five days behind, which is the furthest behind I've been, and I'm kind of struggling to keep up with being 5 days behind too. I seem to have so much else going on, either in my head, or just "to do" in the evenings (which is my only time to read the Bible anyway) that it's getting harder to fit in LARGE readings. When I'm tired I read slower too, and I've been really tired lately. I do still read as I'm settling Benjamin for his naps, but he has gone down to two naps a day now (sometimes three), so there are not nearly as many opportunities as there were at the start of this challenge in January! I think he was still wavering between 4 and 5 naps (on a bad day!) back then!

The good news is that the 90-day challenge includes 2 "grace days" (it's actually an 88-day plan)! So if I use those up then I am only 3 days behind. I am currently reading Day 76 I think, and I'm finishing today's reading with John 15. I love being in the New Testament at last! But I'm surprised at how wistful and sad I felt at leaving the Old Testament behind. One thing I've taken from this challenge is that I have really fallen in love with the Old Testament and with Israel's history, and the "Ancient of Days" aspect of God. I've nearly finished the 4 gospels and am hoping that I will get ahead with the shorter books to come. I love the letters in the New Testament! The only thing about the New Testament is that it's SO PACKED with life-changing information! I want to slow down and absorb and apply it to my daily life, but I can't because I'm on a deadline! ;) I will definitely come back and study the New Testament in more depth later this year.

I still haven't thought what to do about continuing to stay in the Word after the challenge is over. I still can't believe I will REALLY and truly have read the whole entire Bible in such a short space of time, very soon! I am desperate to finish "on time", and I know it really doesn't matter if I finish a few days late, or even a few weeks late - the point is that I will still have read the whole of the Bible in a remarkably short time, and completed it - but I doooo so want to succeed at the actual challenge! To finish it within the 90-day period would be such a sense of accomplishment, and after 3 months straight, I WANT that! ;) I love that it has been almost 3 months where I have read a significant block of God's Word every single day! How refreshing for my soul! I do not want to go back to reading none of it on any given day.

I have such an unbelievable amount of stuff to write about here, but the time pressures and such have prevented that for quite a while now. I'm really missing updating here with the usual photos, news and thoughts! I hope I'll have time to do more of that once the Bible challenge is finished in a couple of weeks.

In case I forget, a few things I want to write about, off the top of my head (to help me remember when I come back to blog about them!):

* New reading curriculum for Arthur (Rocket Phonics - thanks Kimberly for posting a review that led to me buying it for my children!). We started it last week and will include Matthew in it as far as he's able.

* Currently reading (along with Bible - hmmm, maybe that is contributing to the behind-ness of things?!) "Managers Of Their Homes" by Teri Maxwell. At the risk of sounding repetitive, thanks once again to Kimberly for posting her family's schedule recently and citing this book as the framework for the schedule. I have had my eye on it for a couple of years, and just shied away from such scariness as Serious Scheduling until now! ;) Now it's bought, and I am in the middle of the painstaking process of putting together a detailed schedule for us to try. I think it will help me a LOT, and the kids too. I'm the type who works better from lists and so on. I'm also pretty desperate for some order, so I'm motivated! ;)

* Nathan is talking sooooo much! And almost completely normally, as in, constructing his sentences like the bigger boys, and with a huge vocabulary. His voice is so so so incredibly tiny and chipmunky, and we adults (Neil and I, that is!) almost fold up into a puddle of aww-ness every time he speaks to us. *sigh* Neil wants to call him Chip, in honour of his teeny tiny little helium voice! Bless! He's such a tiny cute little boy.

* Nathan's stats - only 32.5 inches tall at his 2nd birthday (double that and according to something-or-other, he'll only be 5ft 5in when he's fully grown!!), but he grew an inch in the 6 weeks that followed, and my mum said I should double that instead, given than he was born a month early. So, 5ft 7in, like Matthew's measurement was! :) This month (2yrs, 2mos) he weighs 24.5lbs! He's at the 9th percentile for height and weight. So teeny! He's my tiny little precious, as I probably tell him at least 50,000 times a day! :)

* Benjamin had his 8-month check. Flying colours, etc :) He is 70cm long (don't know the inches) just under 50th percentile, and weighs 19lbs 13oz - catching up with Nathey!

* Benjamin's general news - crawling all over the place, pulling up to kneel on everything and everyone, and then screeching with frustration when he can't figure out how to get "down" from kneeling. He is pulling to stand on the sofa, but it is the biggest exertion I ever saw a baby make, and his chunky little legs go all quivery with it! He wants to do this all the time and gets rather frustrated about not being able to yet.

* Breastfeeding update - Benjamin nursing probably 6+ times during the day (on demand) and waking 3-6 times (yes, you read that right) over night/evening and nursing then too. Tired mama. BLISSFUL mama. Which cancels out Tired Mama easily :) Matthew still having a bedtime breastfeed (yes, he'll be 4 in June) as Arthur was still doing at his age. Considering a 3-hourly routine for breastfeeding Benjamin during the day as part of the new schedule... Hoping for a new nursling by this time next year though, God willing! :)

* School - long break after Christmas. School in bits and pieces since then, involving mucho guilt-tripping for me, and (in hindsight) surprisingly large amounts of academic learning for the two older boys! Not sure how! But there we go! :) Spent last week reviewing a lot of maths, and are back on track with the Right Start Math curriculum this week. Arthur absorbing it much faster than he did before Christmas.

* Matthew STILL not potty trained, and starting to get concerned... He is hugely anxious about doing a poo all the time, and needs much reassurance the whole time he's trying to do one. He's never constipated, so it's a mystery. It's been like this for a long time. Way back into last year I think. Still doesn't appear to be ready control-wise with the wees either. Considering asking my GP about it.

* Neil is out of work again! Mutually agreed separation from his job the first week of March, and he has 3 months of paid "garden leave" (just leaving the job but still being on contract and getting paid), and then a month of full UNTAXED pay in May! :) No anxieties at all about the future and finances. God is sovereign, mighty and good. We have no cause to be anxious about anything.

* Need to move house! Currently exploring possibilities, but job situation throws spanner in the works a bit. Neil is working on becoming self-employed, but we're not talking much about that with anyone outside the family until it looks like it will pan out. Will be sure to talk more about that here at a later point! :) We are letting God order our steps, and He is doing so! :)

* TV officially DITCHED!!! Woohoo!! I am on Cloud 9, seriously. It has now been one month since we switched the thing off (the boys have not seen any TV at all since then) after Nathan pulled the phone cable till it snapped out of the extension thingy, and we had to plug the phone in next to the TV instead. Not enough plugs for everything, so we chose to unplug the TV, and wow oh wow, what a wonderful difference it made, even just that first day! By Day 3 I was begging Neil to let us continue to have no TV, although originally we planned to buy another extension cable so we could plug the TV back in again. Obviously we CAN plug the TV in, but we are not doing so. Now we have moved it out of the living room and into the kitchen, where Neil does his "work" (the vague stuff I am not talking about yet) for several hours a day - he uses the TV as a computer monitor. The living room feels just so much nicer and cleaner without the TV, and the boys are flourishing without it. I am even more anti-TV than I ever thought I was before, now that I've seen the startling effects! Never going back. Nevvver. They'll watch educational DVDs from time to time though, I should think, when we figure that kind of thing out. We have so much more time for play, school, just character training, imaginitive things, etc. They complained a fair bit on the first day or so, but I was surprised that they have not missed it at ALL since then. TV is subtley BAD BAD BAD for children. Mine used to watch such a lot of it, and I had no idea, and now we've done this I really see it for what it is with my own eyes. NOT good for children! Glad to be rid of it for mine! :)

* Also letting God order our family size, and waiting and hoping for news of a new little blessing, perhaps soon? I had a chemical pregnancy last cycle with a couple of faint positive pregnancy tests, so I see that it's definitely a possibility! So exciting! Neil 100% on board with completely trusting God to open or close my womb as He sees fit! Yay! :D

Probably tons more, but that's the mainstay of it in a nutshell. Will hopefully be back soon to pad those subjects out a bit more, and post long-overdue photos! Thanks to those who have let me know they're missing my updates! It makes me feel special! And motivates me to hurry up and do so! ;) *hugs*

A Memory Treasure

Yes, it's 1.55am.

And I just HAD to post to record a memory so that it's never lost.

Oh how THANKFUL I am at 1.40am in a dark room, to be swaying and bouncing gently with my arms FULL of baby. Not a tiny baby any more, but a big gorgeous chubsome almost-8-month-old baby boy. Full. And extra squidgy in his baby sleeping bag. Thankful for the weight on my arms and the ache in my shoulders, his dear little head slumped heavily onto my shoulder. I was waiting for that burp, the one that was surely lurking down there after such a big luxurious feed, but he was so unconscious that nothing came. As I turned to walk to his little hammock to put him down, he gave a big sigh and lifted his head off my shoulder. Still fast asleep, he stopped with his head fully upright and his cheek plonked sideways, right onto mine.

So, I didn't put him down. In fact I could have held him like that all. night. long. Even if I had have ended up palpitating with exhaustion and with trembly limbs.

I stood there with that warm, soft little cheek pressed up against mine, his sweet fast baby breathing, all sleepy and rhythmic an inch from my ear. I stood as though I didn't know what to do next, or what on earth to do with myself. I just stood frozen. I felt overwhelmed with something and didn't know how to express it, and I also didn't want to disturb the moment with any movement. I stood and closed my eyes and focused on the squidgy heaviness of his little body in my arms. The pull of his weight on my shoulders. The soft warmth of his cheek against mine. The sound of his breath in my ear. And suddenly I was whispering out loud (it being 1.40am), apparently to God, "Oh thank you! Oh thank you! Oh THANK YOU! Oh thank you!" and I couldn't stop saying those words over and over and over, because it was all I could feel and more than I could contain. I had no other words, because I could only see those ones, and they eclipsed everything else in my head. The only thing that stopped me saying the words over and over was the point where my heart swelled up until it blocked my throat with an enormous lump and I couldn't say anything more.

And I put him down then. I watched him sleeping for a moment and then I came away, wanting to record what I had seen and felt, completely bewildered as to how I could come to be as blessed as this. I remembered the verse in 1 Samuel where David says to Saul, "Who am I, and what is my family or my father's clan in Israel, that I should become the king's son-in-law?" (1 Samuel 18:18), and just kept saying to God, "Who am I, and what is my family that you have chosen to bless me this generously?!" because I felt in such awe of God's blessings to me in my children. Who am I that God should bless me to be the mother of FOUR SONS?! I literally stand with gaping mouth, not knowing what to say or do as I think of it. I am understanding deeper and deeper as God works on my heart about this, what this verse really means:

"Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man {or woman!} whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate." (Psalm 127:3-5)

"Thank" and "You" are two such small words. But right now they just sum it up perfectly.

Thank you Lord.
