Lovely rainy day!

Today it rained and rained and rained. We have had a lot of rain lately. We're in the south of England, but in the north there has been some dangerous flooding with all the rain, and still it continues. Some days there is sunshine with the showers, and it's windy and cold with it too, but the rain is pretty consistent.

I am so thankful for rain. Today I watched it fall from the window and had one of those moments of surreal clarity. How amazing it suddenly seemed, to see water falling out of the sky and making big pools and streams on the ground! Like I had never really seen it before. I was just in awe that God sends water down to earth from the sky, and that the plants and living things grow and thrive because of it.

I thought about parts of western Africa which are right now experiencing severe drought. A charity letter that came the other week said that most children aged under six in those parts have NEVER seen rain falling before. That just stopped me right in my tracks. I just think, how can we - how DARE we?! - moan and complain about a little rain? I mean, Cumbria has reason to be upset about the rain and there has been loss of life in the floods, but I mean more in terms of general daily British whining and complaining about rainy weather. In light of the African crisis, it just sickens me to hear people complaining! I mean, really, it's nothing but a minor inconvenience or mood-depressant, surely? Not actually a big deal! We are BLESSED beyond measure - we need water to survive, and we literally have it falling out of the sky in our country! The landscape in parts of west Africa is scattered with dead animal carcasses. Nothing will grow, and no livestock can survive, so no food is available for people or animals, and everyone is starving. All for lack of RAIN.

Today, I rejoice in the rich and luxurious blessing of heavy rainfall, and I pray that God will release it over Africa again. Without intending to, Benjamin and I slept in so ridiculously late this morning that Neil got the boys ready for church without waking us, and went to church without us. When we got up, we enjoyed a quiet house, and some beautiful worship music. I flung open the windows, even with the chilly air, to bask in the beauty of the rain, with Benjamin in my arms. After watching it for a while, I realised that I really wanted to photograph it. The things that I feel really passionate about photographing are elements of nature, and babies and children. I have always loved photographing a pile of leaves, or a sunset (endless endless badly-turned-out photos of these from my teens and 20s, haha!), or a tree in its autumn colours. Today, the idea of trying to capture just RAIN gave me such a buzz! I took some photos, and then Benjamin went for a nap. Once he was asleep I was able to play with my camera a little more. I still know very little about taking photographs with my new(ish!) camera, but I certainly enjoyed trying various things to get the images I wanted. I didn't get quite what I wanted for all the different things I saw (maybe this should be at my photography blog?!), but I had fun! :)

Rainy morning

Benjamin watching the rain from my arms

Beautiful raindrops on my open window

The sun comes out!

And the rain continues...

How good are God's gifts to us, and how beautiful His creation is!

I love the rain! :)

Labour?

Just a quick update here to say that I *think* things might be hotting up for labour here. It was my due date yesterday, and things have been very quiet in that department, till I had a "show" when I got up which has continued through the morning and ended up with some light bleeding too. I am starting to get some contractions now which are short and irregular and not too painful, so I wanted to update here to say that I will be updating my pregnancy blog as long as I can through labour (if this really is "it"!), if you want to follow me there. If you've never read me at my pregnancy journal though, beware the TMI, haha! I do not hold back about anything there and am as long-winded about detail as I am here! You have been warned! ;) I will absolutely update here with baby news when I'm able, if there's any to report later on or tomorrow!

Also, thanks so much for all the comments on my last post, I so appreciate it!! The boys have been easier to handle for some reason these last few days. Arthur and Matthew seem to be suddenly playing more imaginative games together and this is keeping them busy and happy for long periods of time. I am also getting down new educational toys for them every other day, that I bought in advance as "ammunition" (lol!) for the time around the birth and the early postnatal period. They are excited, learning all about dinosaurs and opposites and things at the moment! I also meant to clarify - the peeing and spitting is BOTH boys equally, not predominantly Arthur (Matthew is actually the worst with the spitting). Arthur is the one who is being incredibly rude to our faces, and that doesn't seem to be something Matthew naturally does, but he's learning from Arthur :S So, it's definitely both of them individually, not Arthur having problems and Matthew picking up the behaviour or anything, just to clarify. We've kept the living room much tidier the last two days and they seem happier in that environment too (poor things!). It's mainly their own mess everywhere which is the problem, but the last two days I have disciplined them if they refuse to tidy, until the room is clear, and they've been way better since that.

Okay, that's all for now. I am going to time contractions - exciting! :)

Nearly at my due date....

It's July 1st! July is actually here! I am 39 weeks pregnant today!

I am so stressed about it being July and being 39 weeks pregnant today. Right now I just feel like I want to run away and hide from the inevitable events of the next couple of weeks. Everything feels soooo overwhelming right now.

It's so HOT and humid! I am sooooo bad with hot and humid weather, I just can't stand it. I feel ill in hot weather when I'm NOT 39 weeks pregnant with little ones to look after! I am so beyond thankful for our plug-in A/C unit that we bought from Homebase a few days after Matthew was born (in the last heatwave we had! Why is it only when I'm about to give birth?!). It means we have to hang a hose out of the window and I am not crazy about spiders coming into my bedroom (the boys found a female false widow spider in the garden the week before last (Neil killed it) and then last week Neil found the male and the nest complete with hundreds of spiderlings and a new egg sac (*shudder*) in the pedal of his bike in the garden!). I'm pretty sure a couple of dozen of those spiderlings have not been accounted for! So I'm paranoid about open windows right now. I don't want false widow spiderlings coming in and maturing into adults who will then give my babies venomous bites!! Scary. I found one inside so far already. Anyway, I digress. I'm so thankful for the A/C unit! It means my bedroom is only 76 degrees (25 celsius? I don't speak celsius!) instead of 91 overnight (33!) like it was before we bought it when Matthew was newly born! Crazy! It doesn't cool the other rooms too well, but it's so much better than nothing! We are just having the curtains and windows closed all the time when the sun is on the house, and it's too hot for the boys to play outside. This morning early there was some cloud so I let them out before 9am for a while. They wanted to come in after 40 minutes when the sun came out. It's just so oppressive! We're eating ice-lollies and drinking plenty but generally pretty bored inside.

It doesn't help that I'm suddenly completely incapacitated, it seems, pregnancy-wise. I am healthy and this pregnancy has gone wonderfully smoothly! I feel so blessed! But also, I'm just so huge and exhausted lately, and no matter my night-sleep, I feel desperate for a long nap every afternoon, which I can't get. I am pretty much able to do Nathan's naps, nappy changes for the younger two, and get their meals, and that's about IT. Which sucks for the boys really. There is NO housework getting done, and let me tell you, not doing housework + heat and humidity = fast mould growth, oh yes. And stinky home. We don't even have something useful like a washing line, or anything outside which we could hang clothes on! But I refuse to use the tumble dryer, so the result is lately that we have no clean clothes and a multiplying mountain of dirty laundry all over the house, urgh. I tried last week to do some housework (just basic maintenance!) but spent the rest of the day feeling nauseous and faint and exhausted, and basically had to lie on the sofa for nearly 3 hours that afternoon while the boys wreaked havoc around me! So, Neil said no more attempting to keep up with housework. But then, the house goes to complete ruin! Which is a) disgusting, and b) really upsetting me to look at. Also Neil is doing bits and pieces in the evenings, which I feel kind of bad about. He has enough on his plate really.

The boys' behaviour. Again. I almost don't want to write about it here because I have done so soooo many times this past year and it's always worse and worse and worse, and I always get a ton of advice that conflicts and end up feeling kind of embarrassed about admitting to what goes on in our home in the end! :S

But it's bad. Arthur and Matthew are spitting and peeing everywhere. I kid you not. They are trashing the room daily (more than once usually, especially Matthew). They are drawing on the walls. ALL my glass in the living room has dried spit on it. All of it. Mirror, door glass, windows, everything. It has been running and then smeared about with fingers, and is now dry like that, but today I have not managed to clean the glass in there. I sit in the evening and look at it and just feel so depressed. They do that to the glass every day, several times a day. They get disciplined every single time they spit, but they still do it the same. They are going out of their way to disobey me as much as they possibly can. Neil gets the exact same behaviour from them, it's disgusting really. They are so RUDE to our faces. They use nasty tones and aggressive faces, and blow raspberries and stick their tongues out at us. This is mainly Arthur, but Matthew is learning. I can't fathom how to discipline Arthur, because he is simply not responding to the strongest discipline we know how to dish out, even if it's repeated endless times per day. He is lately lying like crazy, and Matthew is starting to as well. His attitude and spirit is getting so awful, everything is about him and no matter if he has to hurt somebody else or lie through his teeth or blame some innocent brother, he will if it gets him what he wants, or helps him avoid something he doesn't want. I'm so disgusted, and I am struggling because I feel terribly guilty and at a loss about it - I'm the parent and this has to rest entirely on MY shoulders (well, Neil's and my shoulders, collectively). *I* am responsible for his behaviour and attitudes and it's my responsibility to mould and shape that in him, and I'm absolutely MISERABLY failing. The fruit is almost all bad.

We are honestly for the first time reaching a stage where we are feeling desperate enough to need some sort of professional help from a real-life "Supernanny" or someone, and we've never thought that could ever be us, no matter how bad things got with the boys. I can't really understand why, although I'm sure I must be being reeeally naive or just stupid about something, somewhere along the line. People suggest things, like, maybe it's to do with the baby coming? Or maybe they're just too bored and not stimulated enough? Maybe they don't get out enough? Maybe they should be at school? Etc, etc, you get the picture. I'm not convinced one bit about any of the above suggestions - it's been going on too long to be baby-related, although it's mayyybe possible that the behaviour worsening is related to it in some way? I don't know. Arthur is so very excited about Benjamin coming soon and talks eagerly about it all the time. Matthew says nothing about it, and seems not to have made much of a connection yet, so far.

Bedtimes are getting difficult. If Matthew does not nurse to sleep (and he won't be doing that all that much longer because I will probably want to wean him in a few months if he hasn't done so by himself), then it's impossible to get them all to settle properly for bed. Now, don't get the impression that I mean children who won't "settle down" and lay down in their beds, no no. I mean, children who scream and shout hysterically back and forth to each other and say as many rude things as they know how to say, and make sure they do the opposite of what we ask them repeatedly to do, as forcefully as possible for as long as possible, while their poor baby brother sits dazed in his cot next to their bunk bed in complete confusion at their noise, tired and wanting to be able to go to sleep. It makes me SO ANGRY, I can't even describe it. They always end up downstairs in seperate time-out zones, but still shrieking and spitting and laughing hysterically so that Nathan still can't go to sleep and we can't "switch off" their noise to our ears to allow ourselves to calm down and discipline them properly. This kind of bedtime takes 2 hours. Two hours of this continuous behaviour. I can't stand it!

Tonight I just cried and cried at bedtime. I lost my temper with Matthew after about 40 minutes of it and then held him while he cried, and Nathan cried next to us in his cot (while Arthur cried in the other bedroom with Neil) and just could not breathe for crying. I never ever do that in front of the kids, but I just had nothing left to prevent it. They did calm down after that, but urgh.

I have a stressy home visit from midwives tomorrow, well, two. A normal antenatal appointment in the morning and then a big appt at noon where some midwives are coming over and bringing the senior Supervisor of Midwives from the hospital, to discuss in detail my decision to have a homebirth despite being Group B Strep positive (thus declining IV antibiotics). Urrrrgh. My doula is coming (did I say here that I have a fantastic Christian doula?!?! I do! Thank you Lord!) and I'm glad of that, and Neil is going to try to get work to let him be here over that time to take the boys somewhere (shopping centre?! Too hot for outside!) while it happens.

I feel about ready to just have a hospital birth anyway, with the state of the house and the boys' behaviour. More than that though, I am just feeling slightly panicky about the fact that I'm 39 weeks pregnant and due to give birth REALLY soon. I don't want to!!! I want to hide and for it not to happen! I would happily continue my pregnancy for another few months right now! ;) I just can't fathom how it will be when I have tiny Benjamin here AND the house as it is and the boys' behaviour as it is, in such a short time from now. I have no idea how on earth I will avoid postnatal depression with that kind of set up. I had it mildly after the first two boys, mainly due to finding it hard to cope afterwards. None whatsoever with Nathan, possibly because Neil was out of work and home to help all the time. So, I'm anxious.

Well, my laptop battery is about to die and I made a deal with myself to go to bed when it dies! So I must stop for now. Sorry it's just a huge rant. I need to pray a lot. I'll update properly soon.

About Nathan

It's 10am and the boys are up, obviously, and I usually have a rule of not getting out the laptop at all during the day. BUT, I am just never getting a thing done online, especially at my blogs, when I leave it till the evening. I'm SO tired out lately and don't get through the day particularly well. I'm officially on "baby watch", being full-term in my pregnancy at last! ;) I'm 37 weeks now - less than 20 days till my due date!

So, I got out some jungle animal toys (I got some buckets of 60-90 "counters" in various themes recently - I'm making activity boxes for the boys for after the baby comes) and they're pretty absorbed with that at the moment. I really just wanted to catch up on a few things here, even if I don't get as much done as I need to - anything is better than nothing!

It was Matthew's birthday on Sunday - he's three! It feels odd not to have a 2-year-old any more, but as my mum reminded me, it's only 7 months before I have one again (how crazy is that?!?!)! Now I have a 4-year-old, a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old! :) Matthew had a lovely birthday, and we went to Bird World in Surrey. The journey was not too long and it went fine. Matthew and Nathan went to sleep in the car on the way there even! I have a million photos which I had planned to have posted here alreayd, but I am just. so. tired. in the evenings now that I'm getting only a few edited per evening and then I just have to go to bed because my eyes aren't focusing properly! So far I've edited 44 photos (told you there were lots!) and I'm part-way through the Bird World photos - still have to do the birthday cake stuff from when we arrived home yet! I'll post them asap with more detail about his big day, and maybe somehow manage to pick out fewer photos than I've edited for this blog! 60 photos would probably be a bit too many for one entry, haha! ;)

The boys are NOT playing with jungle animals any longer, and they're not being too well behaved actually. Nathan is napping, but I'm suspicious that I heard bumping around upstairs just now, so I might just have to stop for now. I just really wanted to write a bit about Nathan, because at his age he is changing so fast and I don't want to let it all pass by without recording any of it! So let's see how much I can get typed about him before I have to go!

Nathan is now 17 months old! Benjamin is due in the week before he turns 18 months, so I think they will probably be exactly 18 months apart.

Nathan is so behind on his toothypegs compared with my other boys! He has four at the top in the middle, and the two middle bottom ones - these have been the same for MONTHS! At the end of May he cut the first corner of his top left (or right as you look at him) molar, which is still the only part of it sticking through. I was so surprised because he hasn't had ANY bother from cutting his first molar! I just happened to see it there when I was brushing his teeth, and I knew it was about to cut through because of the white pressure point on his gum a couple of days before, but he didn't complain in the least. He hasn't got any other molars imminent at the moment, so he just has the 7 teeth (well, 6 and a tiny bit!) at the moment. I keep thinking surely he's about to get like TEN at once and catch up, haha! But he doesn't. I adore his sweet little semi-toothy grin! It's been like that for so long and I can't imagine him with more teeth in his smile now!

Something that I totally didn't expect (and am not too happy about!) with Nathan is that he has self-weaned! A couple of months ago, at 15 months, he had a bad cold which kept him congested for 2 whole weeks, too much so to breastfeed. He tried sometimes and found it upsetting that he couldn't, but then the rest of the time he would just shake his head and pull my top back down when I offered to nurse him. After his cold was gone, he got back into nursing again, just for his day naps (twice a day) and bedtime. I night-weaned him a few months ago in preparation for him moving into the boys' bedroom, hoping he'd sleep through the night better and thus disturb the boys less. It wasn't hard to night-wean him, as he only really got cross and wanted to nurse once in the night at about 4 or 5am. Very different to Arthur as a baby! Not too different from Matthew, but I was offering the breast to Matthew more frequently at that age. He breastfed before 2 naps, at bedtime, and first thing upon waking in the morning - even still at 19 months when my waters broke with Nathan! And if he got hurt in the day time. Nathan hasn't been nursing for getting hurt or for comfort in the day time, which is a first really. I'm not really sure why not. I think just because he hasn't been interested to. He hasn't nursed outside of bed in many many months, maybe even before he turned one? I can't remember. But that is very different to my other babies anyway.

So, he breastfed for a few weeks after his cold, and then now and then he started to latch and immediately pull off again and turn away. I haven't had any noticeable milk supply at all for months, because it always dries up by 20 weeks of pregnancy for me. I get colostrum soon afterwards, and definitely can express that now, but he's been used to that before now. So I'm not sure what's caused him to refuse to nurse. My personal goal with breastfeeding for each of my children is two years minimum, and so far that has been well surpassed! So it was very strange to me to see signs of Nathan choosing to wean before then! It's not what I wanted at all, but I would never force him to continue. I did persevere OFFERING the breast at all the usual times for a good 2 or 3 weeks. He eventually stopped even doing the quick latch thing, and just would shake his head if I asked him if he wanted any "milky". If I lifted my top to nurse him, he would pull it down straight away. I noticed he was happy to snuggle up to me and get sleepy before his naps, lying down on the bed, so we did that for a while, and then he stopped wanting to do that too.

I haven't TOTALLY called him "weaned" because I know that after Benjamin is born, when I have a ton of milk again, he MAY see Benjamin breastfeeding and want to try again, in which case I will absolutely let him! If he does do that, he might want to nurse properly again for a long time, or he might just give it a try for a short while and then stop for good. I don't know. Right now I would say he has self-weaned for sure, and I no longer offer him the breast :( I'm a bit sad about it because I love extended breastfeeding and it's the last thing I expected! I ended up needing to wean Arthur shortly after his FOURTH birthday because it was starting to drive me nutty (!), and he spent much of the next 4 or 5 months asking to nurse and missing it. He was always (by far!) my most attached baby when it came to breastfeeding. Matthew is still breastfeeding at bedtime, at age 3! :) He occasionally asks in the day time if he's very tired or hurt badly, but I usually tell him no because it's day time and remind him that milky is for bedtime. On rare occasions I give him a very quick breastfeed in the day for a bad hurt or something like that. He's still very attached to his bedtime nursing sessions and almost always nurses to sleep, which I'm happy with for now. I think it won't be long before it starts to feel a bit.... there's not a word for it really - like it started to with Arthur (which I didn't expect, since I was enjoying breastfeeding so much!), and I'll WANT to wean him. So, I'm still breastfeeding someone, as I have done without a break since Arthur was born 4.5 years ago, but surprisingly it's not my youngest! ;) Sometimes it's a bit sore lately (pregnancy-wise) but I have had a MUCH less sore time of it this pregnancy. The worst was Matthew's pregnancy - it was so sore to breastfeed a lot of that time, but Arthur did nurse eleventy times a day and at night too.

Anyway that's the main news about Nathan really. He self-weaned at 16 months old. I can hardly believe it in many ways! But I know that lots of toddlers self-wean earlier, especially when their mothers are pregnant again. Oh well. I wish he was still nursing! But never mind!

Nathan is STILL working on running! He practises so hard every day, back and forth across the diagonal of the living room, like the other boys do (especially Matthew!). He prefers to practise running and stuff inside the house than outside, but he LOVES to be outdoors. He can now "race-walk" really well, hehe! Two days ago he did a little sort of bounce to the race-walk and Neil and I were convinced he'd just managed his first little run, but he hasn't repeated it since. He gets so excited when his brothers run back and forth, or outside, and joins in squealing excitedly, as fast as he can.

He has very few words still, but has just started to say "gone" and "open" really clearly. He has a TON of baby words that sound ever so real-word-like, and tries so hard to communicate with us using those words, which I find so sweet! Matthew had probably just as few words at this age, so I'm not concerned about it at all. I never have been one to be concerned over speech in any case. Arthur was later than average with words, but far ahead of where Nathan is now. He was behind his peers, and finally started stringing 2 or 3 words into short sentences at 22 months. By 2 months later he had suddenly overtaken his peers and had a huge vocabulary with long sentences, so he was obviously okay! ;) Matthew didn't start stringing words together till he turned 2, and caught up with things a few months later. He was much bigger on motor skills than Arthur was, and Nathan is the same way, so I'm not expecting Nathan to talk in even short sentences till he turns two, which is a while away yet. I don't know how many words he's got, but it's not many. I'll see if I can list them off the top of my head, though I'm sure I'll miss a few!

* Gone (goh!)
* Open (oh-bah)
* Daddy (deh-dah)
* Arthur (ah-tha)
* Hair (haaa)
* Nose (doh)
* Bye-bye (bah-bah) (he also says "bah-bah deh-dah" (bye-bye Daddy))
* Car (cah)
* Here you are (ee-wah) - for handing me something - this is heard very frequently throughout the day!
* Curtain (coh-cuh) - I'm pretty sure he said this for the first time (many times!) yesterday, pointing to the curtain every time.
* Again (geh!) - usually repeated over and over with great enthusiasm! ;)
* Uh-oh (oo-oo, or oo-oh) for when something falls over or down from the table when he's eating, etc.

I think there are more, but the boys are being "difficult", ugh, so I have to go. Oh, but Nathey also says "moo" for a cow, SUCH a cute high-pitched "meeeeew!" for a cat (he calls the cats outside by standing at the window in the living room and saying it over and over and over. If he gets up there and starts to mew excitedly then he's often telling us he sees a cat. If I ask him if there's a cat there, he'll turn to me and say, "Yyyyeah!!" excitedly. He's VERY big on saying yes, allll day long, but he has never said the word no yet. He shakes his head for no. He roars for a lion if he sees one in a book or a toy one, is starting to make a hissy noise for a snake, does a sort of shorter roar thing for a dog's barking, and another type of roar for a pig, lol! All my little ones have roared for a pig, because they can't seem to do the inhaley snort that I do, and do it exhaling instead, which basically sounds like a roar! ;) He quacks (wack-wack!) for a duck very eagerly

He gives kisses and cuddles like none of my babies have so far, it's sooooo adorable! He wants to kiss his brothers all the time, and is very spontaneous. His kisses have stopped being the baby open-mouthed ones a while ago, and he now approaches people with his top teeth over his bottom lip, which is his version of the puckered lips thing, hehe! He pops his mouth open with a "fffuh" sound to actually give a kiss. If he hurts one of his brothers (he's sometimes hitting when he's frustrated with one of them) we ask him to "say sorry" which he can't do because he can't say it yet, but he always immediately goes and gives them a kiss instead. We are working on "gentle" with him too, and he's really starting to respond to that recently, which will hopefully be helpful when Benjamin is here! I am not sure how he'll fare with a new baby brother now. I have always found that still nursing the new big brother is a MAJOR factor in how well they accept the new baby, but Nathan is my first child who won't have that helpful factor. Another major factor for them is whether I have a homebirth or not, and I'm not sure if I can, given that I have just tested GBS positive (Group B Strep).

He's my most independent baby by far, playing very happily and entertaining himself for long stretches of time with toys and books. He adores vehicles of any sort and pushes them around the floor endlessly. He pushes trains on the wooden train track now too, and says "oo-oh" (uh-oh) for when they fall off the track! He loves loves loves looking through books and will amuse himself for a long long time just looking through book after book, even if he's holding some of them upside down! ;) He is very into soft cuddly toys, more so than my others have been. He loves to squeeeeeeze them to his cheek or neck with both arms and a blissful smile on his face :) He's SUCH an incredible sweetie pie. He loves to dance, especially when one or both of his brothers are doing so, in fact he loves to join in anything they are trying to do (sometimes this is a huge source of frustration for them!). He claps readily at anything he feels proud of doing! He loves to help tidy and put dirty laundry or even dirty nappies over the kitchen gate. He loves the wooden geometric stacking toy and will stack and re-stack for a long time, happily. He adores the ride-on toys in the garden, but prefers pushing them rather than sitting on them, with the exception of Matthew's main birthday present - the Little Tikes Cosy Coupe car that you sit inside and push along with your feet. He loves sitting in it, but isn't interested in moving along. He sits in there for up to 10 minutes at a time, just looking relaxed and comfortable, hehe!

He eats really well and isn't as picky as his brothers (yet!). He puts away large quantities of food, even compared with his brothers, but maybe that's just his age and stage of growth. He loves spaghetti bolognese and macaroni cheese. He isn't crazy about mashed potato, which for some reason NONE of my children like. He'll eat it though, which is more than can be said for the other two! He LOVES cheese and yoghurt. He has a sweet tooth and likes cake especially. Arthur is the same way, and Matthew is very different and has never liked cake! Nathey doesn't seem to like any fruit though.... He's quite hard to get fruit into, though he loves raisins, and he'll eat fruit yoghurts and stuff. A few months ago I started giving him those organic fruit puree pots from the baby weaning section in the supermarket, just to see if he would eat them to get some fruit, because he really likes spoon-feeding himself pots of yoghurt or fromage frais, so I was hoping it would work! It DID work for a long time, and he had a good range of fruits that way every day. But lately he won't eat them. He has been totally independently self-feeding since before he was one, thanks to Baby-Led Weaning, and very quickly picked up spoon-feeding himself too. He eats his dinner with a toddler fork and spoon very well, and gets on with meals happily, whereas we seem to still be constantly nagging the older two to eat with their spoon still!

He loves his Monkey and his blankie, and needs both for his naps. He likes to bring them down with him after naps and in the morning, and picks themm up and carries them about a lot. He'll cosy down with them on the sofa, or pick them up and bring them to me purposely to let me know that he's ready for a nap in the day time. He's so different in this kind of way to my others! He still naps twice a day, and there was a time a few months back when he seemed to be refusing his morning nap for a couple of weeks straight. I assumed he was transitioning to one nap a day, and during that time he napped just once right after lunch, but then he had that cold and went back to two naps, and has seemed to totally NEED them both each day. He is usually up for the day by 6.30am (sometimes by 6am) and is tired and ready for sleep by 9am! His naps lengths vary but he usually takes 1.5 hours maybe, in the morning. And then he's tired again by 2.30pm and naps for a couple of hours. Again, NOTHING like my other babies! I love his natural thing for naps! :) He's super grumpy and whiney and cries for AGES after getting up if he wakes too early in his naptime.

He is starting to have more tantrums over things, like if he wants a toy the older boys are playing with and I say he can't. He is fairly easy to distract and divert, but still has these tantrums if he feels very strongly about something! ;) He is NOT hard work and continues to be a very "easy baby". He's such a lovely little boy and a complete delight. He has a smile on his face all the time, one which makes his little cheeks all "appley" and round, and his eyes shine and shine. He's happy and enthusiastic about life all the time. He does this thing with his eyebrows when happy or enthusiastic, where they go up SO HIGH on his forehead, hehe! They are up in that position so much of the time lately, he's just so happy about life! He's such a little precious.

I have no idea what he weighs, or what he has weighed for a LONG time, since I haven't had him weighed since he was X months old (can't even remember, but maybe somewhere like 6 months old?!?!). He's slimming down in his legs especially at the moment, and suddenly looking taller lately, more like a little boy in some ways. He was never chunky like Arthur, but never as slender as Matthew either. He doesn't look like he weighs all that much, but seems healthy and scrummy and toddlerish to me when I look at him. I measured all the boys against the wall yesterday (Nathan's first time!) but I haven't taken a tape measure to the line yet to find out exactly how tall he is. They are stairsteps almost exactly, with about 5-6 inches between each of their heights! So sweet! :)

Okay, that is all for now. Nathan is up from his nap, Tesco has been with my grocery order and I've unpacked it and put it away, disciplined various boys endless times, and now I must go and make their lunch. I'm glad to have got the Nathan stuff written down at last! I absolutely adore that boy-bean-boo. :)

Change of sleeping arrangements!

I'm soooooo behind here! It's late and I am not feeling well at the moment, which seems an even stranger time to start trying to catch up! But it's giving me a chance to do a few small things online here and there, which I wasn't keeping up with before.

Today and yesterday I have had tummy cramps and diarrhoea all day, urgh! The night before it started, I woke up ALL night long (half-hourly) with nausea and tummy ache, and then the next day was Friday and Neil went to work as usual. I still had a bit of nausea and my tummy hurt a bit, but I ate all the same. Which was apparently not the thing to do! I was sooo nauseous that afternoon and had to keep running to the loo as well, and that was so difficult with the little ones. Matthew emptied cereal all over the kitchen floor on one of my toilet runs, and I just so didn't like leaving them all unattended like that all the time. I felt horrible too and had to just lie on the sofa. Since it didn't stop that evening and then I was awake half-hourly with tummy pains again last night (nausea gone though, phew!), Neil worked from home today. I'm so so so thankful that he is able to do that in a pinch - his boss is very good about it. It's hard for him though, trying to work with three little boys in the same room (our house is too smaaaall!) causing all sorts of trouble. They are really difficult to handle at the moment - I sound like a broken record, I know! Nathan isn't so difficult, but the older two go out of their way to be, which is so very difficult right now. Anyway, as it turned out, Neil's work computer system had problems after the first couple of hours and so he was able to just give up on it and take the rest of the day away from work altogether. I had to pretty much stay in bed today. The symptoms I'm having have actually got worse today and I have felt pretty crummy and weak, and can't seem to even have a drink of water without it giving me cramps and the associated evacuation! I am trying to snack on appropriate things anyway. People are saying it sounds like my body is getting ready for labour (I'm 35 weeks now), but I'm not so sure. I haven't been anywhere to catch a bug, but Arthur complained of feeling "queasy" a few times yesterday and had one occasion of loose stools. He's been otherwise fine, but that was odd for him. He's 100% fine today. Also, I have never had that kind of "preparation" before labour with my other pregnancies, so I'm wary of that theory for me. Anyway, who knows. I just want to feel better now!

I realised that I never did post about the change of sleeping arrangements for the boys! Or maybe I did, but never posted photos? I can't remember.

A few weeks ago, we finally moved Nathan's cot into the boys' room, where they now have a bunk bed. Matthew had been sleeping in his toddler bed still, and Neil was using a bunk. They still wake at times during the night and it's so much easier to have one of us sleep there so that they don't just wake everybody else up before we're even awake to know that there's a problem! So we moved Nathan into the room in his cot. We originally hoped to move him into the toddler bed and Matthew into the bottom bunk, but when it came to it, Nathan just doesn't seem ready to be out of his cot yet, and it's HIS little bed! Also, Matthew is still very attached to his toddler bed and we didn't want to cause any problems there!

So, we moved the toddler bed to the main bedroom next to where I sleep, just where Nathan's cot had been. We gave Matthew the option of sleeping in his little bed near Mummy (and thus missing out on "the boys' room"!) or sleeping in the bottom bunk. On the first night he slept in the bottom bunk, very excited about it! On the second night I was just climbing in with him for his snuggle/prayers/breastfeed (yes, he is still breastfeeding at almost 3!), when suddenly he sat up and said in SUCH a sad voice, "But... this is not my bed!" and his little chin wobbled and his eyes filled up! My heart nearly turned to a puddle of goop with how much I LOVED him at that second, and I asked him if he wanted to sleep in his little bed in the other bedroom tonight. He said yes and looked so relieved! He hopped right out of bed and ran to his little bed, and just beamed and smiled in there for ages! So, he slept next to me that night. That was nice, because I didn't feel so alone in the bedroom - the first night without Nathan in there was really surprisingly lonely and sad for me! I missed him sooooo much! I was glad for Matthew to choose to sleep in there the next night, though I didn't get much sleep at all because he flings himself about in his sleep quite a bit (so like his daddy, hehe!) and his arm kept whacking the cupboard door that his bed was up against, which woke me constantly (but didn't disturb him in the least!).

Since that night, Matthew has not slept in his toddler bed. It's still there, and we plan to leave it there a while, just so he knows it's an option for him. But it's going well! He has chosen to nurse in there before going to his bunk to sleep some nights, but not for the last week or two.

Nathan has adjusted very smoothly to the new bedroom, and really hasn't seemed bothered at all by the change-about. He can still be kind of wakeful through the night, but nearly always resettles himself. Arthur can tend to wake once or twice some nights (not many) and when he does, he calls for Neil to resettle him, or climbs down the ladder (in the dark!! Which makes me so nervous!!) to get to him. So Neil is staying in there for a bit longer. We have yet to decide if he's going to move back in with me (which, let's face it, is where he should be! This must all sound so ridiculous to the normal married couple, haha!) at all for when Benjamin comes - oh, that is his name by the way! Benjamin Isaac will be our new baby boy's name! :) I don't think I have said that here yet, though most of you will know from my pregnancy diary. If you know me at Facebook, PLEASE don't mention it there! We never reveal our baby names till they're born, anywhere except my blogs online, and a ton of real-life friends keep up with me there!

Anyway, basically we will have to weigh up the best place for Neil to get the best sleep, which so far has NEVER been in the room with me and the new baby. So, I think it's likely that he'll stay in with the boys (he's on a mattress on the floor, which fills the floor actually, since the room is so tiny!) for the early weeks with Benjamin. If they are wakeful with Benjamin's night wakings, then he's right there to settle them until they get used to it, and he should probably get way more sleep there too. I know I will be up and down like a yo-yo changing nappies, breastfeeding, burping the boy, and changing endless leaked/puked-on sleepsuits and sheets! ;) I can't wait!!! And I promise I am not being sarcastic. I just so can't wait for those sweet early weeks again, exhausting though they are.

So, here are some photos of the change-of-sleeping-arrangements thing! Here's a "before" picture of the boys' room, when it was just the new bunks (aren't they nice?! I got matching bedding and curtains for all three beds recently, and the boys LOVE them! They were soooooo cheap on eBay!) and Matthew's little toddler bed that he has slept in since he was born (as a cotbed back then, of course!):

Here's the "after" picture, just after the cot went in:

And here are a few photos taken once they had all finally fallen asleep on the first night in there together. They went to sleep pretty quickly considering the excitement! Nathan was last to fall asleep, but he takes a good while settling himself to sleep every night as a norm, and he's very independent with it and doesn't fuss or anything.

After I took the photos, I stood and watched them sleeping for a while, and just felt so inexplicably sad! I'm sure I was being heavily influenced by hormones, but it was just a real "moving on" thing for both Nathan and Matthew, and ohhhh I cried and sobbed like a baby, standing there watching them! After a while it got so that I felt pretty sure if I didn't pull myself together I might just continue all evening and end up with a sinus headache and those pretty broken veins under my eyes, so I went downstairs and did some "normal" stuff, and felt a bit better so long as I wasn't thinking about it. I felt sad and lonely in the same way when I went to bed though. It got easier after a few days! :) I now have the opportunity to sleep better than I have since.... well, maybe even since before ARTHUR was born!!! They've all slept through the night for the first time JUST before I give birth to another baby, and I have done all the night wakings with them. Oh but I think there was a time when I was pregnant with Matthew where I slept in the then "spare room" for a while to get a better night's sleep, while Neil and Arthur co-slept. But otherwise, no full nights for me so far! Ironically, I haven't slept well since Nathan moved out, because either I am too tuned in to his sounds in the night still and wake when he stirs anyway, even if he's in the other room and Neil settles him, or else I just have to pee and pee and pee and pee and pee (ad infinitum) all night long due to being hugely pregnant! ;) So, never mind! Good thing I really don't mind it, now that I am so used to it! I am tired though.

So yay, finally caught up with the bedroom stuff that I meant to post ages back.

Matthew's 3rd birthday is coming up! Only 9 days away, I can't believe it. I love that it was 3 years ago exactly when his due date was approaching and I was huge and pregnant and excited to meet him, and I'm in almost the same position now, 3 years later! And how blessed am I to have had another baby in between as well?!?! God is so good to me.

I have been unusually organised, for once, regarding birthdays this summer! I bought all the family birthday cards way ahead, and am now glad to have them in the drawer ready to send out. Thea (my brother's little girl) turned 2 a couple of weeks ago, which is soooo surreal! Those two years have gone so fast! Tonight I wrote Emily's birthday card from all of us, for her 1st birthday, and her sister Ella shares Matthew's birthday on the 14th, but is a year older than Matthew. He was born on her first birthday - cousins! :) I have bought and wrapped almost all of Matthew's presents a few weeks ago - I'm NEVER this organised! We are getting him some smaller presents and one bigger one - the bigger one is one of those Cosy Coupe ride-in cars for the garden. He could have done with one of those a couple of years ago even, but the garden hasn't been suitable for them really, and we're only now starting to make proper use of it. He LOVES those cars at other people's houses, and I figured why not, since we have more little people to grow into it once he has outgrown it! Also, everyone else here has a winter birthday (till Benjamin evens it out!) so garden toys never work for anyone's birthday but Matthew's. I have yet to buy the Cosy Coupe car, mainly because I don't have anywhere to store it to keep it out of sight once it's here! I know where I'm getting it from though, and that it's in stock, so that's okay.

We're giving him two Little Red Train books - he LOVES the one he's got and I know he'll be thrilled with a couple more! Also a jigsaw puzzle, a cut-and-play ice-cream set from The Early Learning Centre (he always wants to play "serving ice-cream" lately, with plastic balls balanced on little cups, so I know he'll love it!), a set of 3 toy emergency vehicles (he is obsessed with these), and a DVD of Postman Pat: Special Delivery Service. He will be highly excited about the DVD, because he looooves Postman Pat, and the new Special Delivery Service series is his favourite right now, alongside Chuggington. Those are his smaller gifts from us. My mum has sent two books and two jigsaw puzzles through Amazon and I've wrapped those too. I love wrapping presents!! :)

It has taken us a while to figure out what to DO on his birthday. We have our own little family tradition of a day out somewhere, usually of the birthday boy's choosing, but we default to the farm for everyone's 2nd birthday, just because it's straightforward and they don't usually know how to choose at that age. They love the play farm! Arthur chose going to France to visit Nana and Grandy for his 4th birthday! I can't believe I haven't actually blogged about that properly yet :(

Anyway, we considered "Days out with Thomas" (Thomas the Tank Engine) but the nearest one was in Essex and we didn't want to travel far. Same thing ruled out the seaside. We considered the farm again, but wanted to do something Matthew would specifically be excited about. We were thinking of going to a miniature railway (he loves trains!) but we don't have a very local one, and we weren't sure if he would decide he didn't like the trains or the steam close up, and end up not enjoying it on his birthday! So, we are going to a place where we there's a small farm area (small animals to stroke - he thinks these kind of animals are "so fweet!!"), and a huge aviary (Arthur loves birds), and an aquarium. Also a big picnic area and a little ride-on train to take you from one place to another. We'll take a picnic and hope the weather is okay! I think all the boys will really enjoy that. It doesn't feel like it will be TOO overwhelming for me as I reach full-term either, because it's fairly local, and we can go at our own pace and do plenty of sitting down as needed. We're not telling the boys till the actual day, I think, just in case something or other happens with me pregnancy-wise and we can't do it on his birthday.

Now I need to ask Matthew what he wants for dinner on his birthday (birthday boys always choose their favourite meal for dinner and I make it for them!), and make his birthday cake. I am making a dump truck birthday cake for him. I wrote myself 3 pages of instructions (with diagrams!) a few weeks ago, to save me time and effort nearer the time. He loves any sort of vehicle, and when I asked him what kind of birthday cake he wanted, he said a police car. But then he changed it to a caterpillar (!), and then a tractor (he had one of those last birthday), and then a train, and so on. He didn't seem to have a clear preference, and Arthur kept on influencing him with his OWN preferences! ;) So I just stopped asking him, and I decided to make him a dump truck. He wants chocolate cake, though he actually isn't a fan of cake at all - I think he will be most likely to eat chocolate cake over other varieties though. He is soooo keen on Smarties (NOT the sour U.S. kind - the chocolate M&M-ish British kind!) and I am going to have the tipper bit of the dump truck filled with Smarties. I hope it turns out okay! I will be sure to post photos :)

We need to figure a way to take videos, because now that I have the new camera, we really don't have any way to take videos right now. The old camera has video capabilities, but it's not working too well, and for a week or two it has disappeared into thin air! Our old camcorder is OLD, and we lost the battery charger a long time ago (hence using the camera to take videos after that!). I don't want to miss the chance to take videos on Matthew's birthday though! I'll have to try to find the old camera.

Okay that's it for now. I have successfully eaten a small bowl of Cheerios, and two loo-run-free hours have passed - weyhey!! :) So I'm going to bed, and hopefully I'll be much better tomorrow. It's the weekend at least - thank you Lord that I didn't get poorly on Monday or Tuesday!

I have so much more to update about, and so many more photos, but I will get to that soon, hopefully! If anything happens in terms of a baby arriving or something (!!) I will be blogging about it as much as I can at my pregnancy blog while it's happening (see last entry for link), and maybe at Facebook if I'm able. Otherwise, I'll be back soon!

Photography and Pregnancy Blogs!

Oh I have a ton to write here, as always, but haven't had chance really. The internet is not working some of the time for us this past week or two, and it's really annoying! I just wanted to quickly say thanks so much for the comments about my very first photos that I took with the new camera! :) I have been taking photos with it for a few weeks now, sometimes having gaps where I don't take any for a few days, because it's hard to find the time some days. Some of them are coming out not-so-great but mainly because I'm beginning to try different modes instead of just auto. I mostly shoot in auto mode, but have started using manual a tiny bit lately (NOT always good results since I have no clue what I'm doing, remember?!). I am reading a photography book (about photographing children) and it's FAB, with assignments in each chapter and everything. So, I decided to start a photography blog to keep a record of any progress I make, because I am really really interested in "pursuing" photography and working on getting better at it. I'm excited about the assignments, and I learn something new each chapter and get to practise and do homework on what I've learned! Yay! I have only put 3 entries in so far, and the first one is explaining about the book and so on. I knew I would like to tell people it's there, but not straight away, so that's why I haven't till now. I am still working on the first assignment, but have just started to post photos. They ALL have to include a child or children, so that means that any photos I post there will be of the boys, and I LOVE to share photos of my boys! :)

So, you can visit me, if you're interested, at http://alicesphotographs.blogspot.com.

Tonight I just posted photos of the boys for part of the assignment called, "White". I put them on a white-sheeted sofa and stuffed a snuggly white duvet on top of them, tucked it in around their little necks and shoulders to hide the colours of their clothes, and started snapping for about 60 seconds (till they started playing dens under the duvet and the photo opportunity had thus expired!). I realised when I posted them that I did not want to miss sharing them with anyone! I'm really pleased with them! And I didn't want to duplicate a post and upload photos twice to different blogs, so I figured it was time to tell readers at this blog that I have the photography blog going (with cute photos in it! Hehe!). Please visit! Although, if you're not interested in photography, it may not be a very exciting place to visit.... but I'll probably refer to it here any time I have photos there that I particularly want to share of the boys.

These are my two favourites from the ones I took and posted today, just because they're worth recording here too, as they're sweet photos of my little boys!

The other thing is, I have started a pregnancy blog here at Blogger. I still have my Diaryland one but I make posts to both of them at the same time now. I just posted about it at my Diaryland pregnancy diary, so if anyone here doesn't know about my blogspot pregnancy diary and would be interested (Warning! Lots of long-winded waffle (are you even surprised?!) and likelihood of TMI, hehe!), here is the link:

http://alicesbaby.blogspot.com

I have not yet transferred many of my nearly SIX HUNDRED archived entries (I know!!! But I have been writing there since 2003 before we even started a family!) for obvious reasons, but I'm working on it slooowwwly. If you ever have reason to want to read my earlier wafflings, you'll have to go back to the Diaryland pregnancy diary (whose link is in my sidebar there). I have transferred the belly galleries, ultrasound galleries, and birth stories for all my pregnancies/babies though! :) Anyway, it's there. I am now 34 weeks pregnant and about to book a homebirth (finally made the decision!). If I have a homebirth I hope to blog during my labour like I did a little with Matthew. I managed to with Nathan to some degree because there was internet at my bed in the delivery room, so if I have a hospital birth in the end, I might still be able to do that. If I do, it will be at my new blogspot pregnancy blog, not the Diaryland one, just so you know!

Okay, I think that's all! I must go to bed, but I'll be back soon with more! It's almost the end of May, which SOMEHOW means that it's only a couple of weeks till my little baby Mathsie-woo turns THREE!!! How in the wide world?! I know he has basically already got 2 younger brothers, but still! He's my baby! How is he three?! I will be sure to waffle more about this soon, and about birthday plans, etc! I am the most organised I have ever been so far, and have already ordered, received, and wrapped his birthday presents! I wrapped them today and put them high in my wardrobe at the back. His presents from Nana (my mum) turned up in the post today from Amazon so I will wrap those soon. We have one bigger item that we haven't bought yet, but all the smaller ones are sorted, and I have also written a detailed design for how to do his birthday cake, to save me time later on - I will reach full-term in my pregnancy around his birthday, so I'm trying to save myself any extra exertion now!

Bleurgh

Thank you for the comments on the photos of my little boys! :)

We have had a couple of rough days. Arthur's cold that he caught at the midwife appointment last week has wiped the floor with us, seriously! He had a nasty cold, and I thought, "Poor Arthur, he DOES get things badly..." but now that all 5 of us have been/are still wading through it, I see that Arthur actually had it sort of moderately really, not terribly! Neil got it by Sunday and had to take Monday and Tuesday off work. He has the most awful chesty cough right now that is triggering his never-really-there asthma - I've never heard his chest sound like this, so I hope it will hurry up and clear up, and not be something he has to go to the doctor for. Nathan had an evening of pitiful screeching every 20 minutes or so on Sunday, and we felt sure he must have a sore throat. Sure enough, he was really poorly the next day and is still producing unforseen quantities of snot today even. Monday I came down with it, and until that point I had (shamefully) been somewhat implying that Neil was dealing with a case of "man flu", such were his complaints about what seemed a simple cold (not a nice cold, but still "just a cold")! Then I discovered exactly what he was complaining about, ugggghhhh. It really is just a cold, but I can't believe how awful it has been, for "just a cold"! At least nobody has been feverish, thankfully! But yuck. No little person could sleep well at all until the achy nastiness started to ease after the first 2 days. Neil and I have had our worst trouble with sinus pain (the kiddies didn't seem to have this trouble, but I've read that little ones don't, since their sinuses aren't developed like adult ones are). I haven't ached so much since I last had real flu.

I also have this REALLY annoying thing where sore throats affect my sleep big time. I have no idea why I must react so over-sensitively to sore throats! I never used to! Tsk. So, a sore throat means I can't sleep. It just keeps me awake. This time the sore throat wasn't severe enough to do that, thankfully! But then, every single time I have a sore throat like before a cold kicks in, it eventually turns into a gritty scratchy throat as it heals. And for some reason this makes me gag and my eyes water and it's absolutely unbearable EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I swallow. It's more bearable during the day because I guess I am eating and drinking and talking and moving about and upright and so on. Upright has a big part to play in how manageable it is - the SECOND I get horizontal it's impossible to cope with, I swallow and swallow to keep from gagging but it gets the better of me in about 4 swallows, by which time my eyes are running from the gritty gaggy thing, ugh. I haaaaaate it, and can't figure out why it affects me so, since it never did before my teens.

So, the scratchy "healing" part of the sore throat always (always) lasts about 36 hours for me. If I'm unlucky, that will cover 2 nights and the day in between, not 1 night sandwiched between 2 days. This time it started at bedtime last night, so I had not one wink of sleep last night, and was constantly rushing down to the kitchen with watering mouth and eyes, to boil a kettle and gulp down water as HOT as my throat would bear it until the gaggy scratchiness eased off. So not fun. Hot water is the only thing I have found to ease the gagginess instantly (well, by the end of about a cupful anyway). Then I have 5-10 minutes to fall asleep before it wears off and I need more hot water! I did not manage to fall asleep that fast any of the times I tried it last night, so I got no sleep. Nathan had a better night though, because I was awake next to him anyway, and thus was able to attend to him the INSTANT he stirred, so that he didn't wake right up and get upset and start coughing. He needed settling in that way maybe 5 or 6 times last night, and woke up really upset at 5am even with me trying to settle him before he woke up fully. He's too congested to breastfeed which is such a shame for the poor little man!

Matthew finally succumbed to the cold yesterday - he played with the same toys as Arthur on Wednesday and has been totally exposed all this time, but he has always had a stronger immune system than Arthur and Nathan (his licking the floor thing as a baby, perhaps?! Or just made more like I was as a child (didn't catch things easily, got them mildly), rather than Neil (caught everything, and badly)?). Anyway. He's streaming and definitely not well, and fell asleep as his lunch was put in front of him yesterday afternoon, bless him! But otherwise trucking on much better than Arthur (or the rest of us!) did. He's also being quite a man about it and refusing to acknowledge that he's ill at all, hehe! If I ask him, "Matthew, are you poorly today?" He will say cheerfully, "Dope!" (nose full of goop!), or if I ask him, "Have you got the cold as well, Matthew?" then he answers, "Um... doh! (no)" whilst wiping his nose on his sleeve, haha! He won't admit to having a cold at all!

Arthur and Nathan have been waking and coughing a lot the past two nights, but Arthur has only stirred briefly once so far and coughed a little, so I'm reeeeally hoping he's almost better, and that the rest of us will follow suit quickly! Neil came home after lunch today and worked from home this evening (bless my lovely husband!) because I had had no sleep the night before and was not well at all still. I have no idea how I got through the morning and lunchtime with the boys, but somehow I did. They were not too well behaved at all though, especially Arthur. We haven't done any reading lessons while we've been poorly, but we'll get back to them as soon as I feel up to it (hopefully tomorrow if I get any sleep tonight!). I was supposed to sleep this afternoon once Neil was home, but my throat was too gaggy once I lay down and tried to sleep. It's still scratching and gritty and horrible right now at nearly 2am, and tonight I decided I was not going to lie in bed and gag and let my eyes water and feel dreadful in the dark and keep on running to boil a kettle. That sucked last night, so tonight, though I am dizzy with exhaustion, while my throat is scratching I am sitting up downstairs (upright helps, though I have never been able to sleep upright, unfortunately!) and reading books that I have wanted to read for ages (I read the whole of Supernatural Childbirth, Meg! Will comment on it at my pregnancy diary next time I update!) and updating here. I haven't been online for a couple of days so I had a bunch of blogs to catch up on reading! I would SO MUCH RATHER be asleep! But oh well. I pray God blesses me with supernatural energy tomorrow! ;) I will need it. We had two viewings for tomorrow but we cancelled them because the house is, well, a house that was not in any sort of clean order to start with, but which has since had 2 adults and 3 very small children with a virus ailing in it, and no tidying, cleaning or anything in that time! I haven't got the energy to do a thing about it for tomorrow, so it had to be cancelled.

We did get a good offer made on our house and we accepted it, but now we are not sure what to expect, because the guy who made the offer is still viewing other properties and has also put an offer on another place! He hasn't retracted his offer on our house, but he has put a new one on another house, so I am less inclined to trust his offer really. We'll just see how we go. We are not stressed about who, when, where, and why, etc, because we know God is in control and his timing is best. I'm beginning to want to stay here for the next few months at least, because I'm only 11 weeks away from my due date (can you believe it?!) so I'm starting to want to nest down and get ready to give birth and have a newborn, etc. I don't really want to be moving house for a while now! We'll probably take the house off the market by June if we haven't sold by then, to have our baby boy and get resettled after his arrival, and then we'll put it back on again. We're not anxious about it at all. God is handling it :)

My digital SLR camera arrived, and I'm SCARED of it, haha! Seriously! I don't know how to TOUCH it, let alone use it! ;) The manual is like War and Peace, and so far I have read 7 pages on how to charge the battery, so I'm nearly ready to do that part of "photography", haha! ;) I have no idea how to even turn the thing on, let alone take a basic photo, and I don't know how to find the time to figure it out! I have been back to the old broken camera and taken a couple of pictures, and just tried to make sure I upload them the INSTANT I take them, without turning the camera off in between so that they don't get mysteriously deleted. The boys have free rein with that camera now - it's theirs! Matthew and Arthur like taking photos with it a lot, and videos (Matthew is improving at pointing the camera at the thing he wants to actually photograph!), and Nathan loves to hold it and press the buttons. He has taken quite a lot of photos with it, but really just of his feet and stuff - he's only 15 months old! ;) It gets drooled on a lot more than it ever used to, but oh well. It's theirs to use, though I won't let them bash it about or anything. It's sure to snuff it pretty soon, but they're having fun with it for now! I just need to learn how to use my new camera with its ENORMOUS lenses and scary million buttons and labels and dials! I took one look at it when I got it out of the box and knew I could not possibly use such a camera without learning to use it properly and justify its purchase! It's a professional camera, and so I need to learn how to take professional (ish!) photographs. I soooo want to, and I'm excited about it, but the gap between here and there is too far to see across right now, and I'm nervous!

Okay, I think I will have a hot drink and try going to bed. I'm too tired to stay up, and I suppose if I really can't sleep I can always get back up and read. Arthur's up coughing at the moment, but he sounds "drier" than he has, so that's good. Little Nathan has been so congested that I put a pillow into his cot for the first time. Just over two nights he has really taken to his pillow and he looks so much like a BIG BOY in his cot now :( It makes me feel such a pang of something, and just wistful, when I look at him. He always lay on his tummy with no pillow as a baby, just sheets or blankets on him, and following the "feet to foot" rule, low down in the cot. Now, almost overnight, he is sleeping with his head on a pillow which is up at the TOP of his cot like a real bed, either sprawled on his back or on his side. He seems to have outgrown his covers at the same time - they don't cover him up enough, or else they quickly get thrown off when he moves about (this boy is a MOVER in his sleep!). So I have had to get out the bigger cot bedding and the cot duvet! He looks so grown up, and I feel sort of sad about it! :( He is breathing lots better with his head on the pillow though, and when I put him down for his nap lower down than the pillow, he sort of wiggled his way up the cot, raised himself up onto all fours for a moment and then flumped his face down onto the pillow, surfacing to snuggle into that spot with a big smile :) He seems to love cosying down into softness, and thus really enjoys his new pillow. My big boy. Waaah! :(

The boys' new bunk bed is arriving the day after tomorrow!!!! I'm excited! When they're set up, they can move right in if they want to, but I am not sure if Matthew will want to give up his toddler bed yet. He has been in that (or the conversion to a cotbed) since the night he was born! I can't imagine him just hopping out of it and into the bunk bed merrily one night. He's still so tiny and that bed suits him so well. BUT at the same time, we're hoping to move Nathan into it within the next couple of months, even if we have to convert it back to a cotbed for a while. I hope that won't be a problem for either Matthew or Nathan.... Baby boy #4 will need Nathan's cot! But if we had to, he could sleep in the Moses basket for a while, or right in bed with me, to give Nathan more time. I don't know. Anyway, that's the plan! I hope it goes okay!

My head is stuffed right up and I can't breathe, and the worst thing is not being able to take decongestants and such because I'm pregnant. I can take paracetamol (which, let me tell you, is not touching the sinus pain!) for aches and pains and I have been, but nada for the congestion. I can't hear properly and I really don't like the "I can't breathe!" thing when it's accompanied by the "I can't breathe!" thing of the 3rd trimester of pregnancy! It makes me feel sort of panicky and claustrophobic. BUT, I can sleep with congestion, pretty much. Just not the throat. By morning it should be all better, so at least tomorrow night I should be able to fall over and sleep like a log till I have to get up! I will try going to bed now and hope I can sleep for a bit. I must update with more photos soon - I have such a backlog! I have a few emails that I'm behind on, which I will get to as well - I just haven't been online for a couple of days and I promise I'm not ignoring you if you were wondering! :)

House things and other quick stuff :)

Just a quick fly-by (really, I will try!), because it's late and I'm about ready to go to bed. I just wanted to quickly post to make note of a few things:

* We had our first viewer today to see our house! He made an offer!!!!! I'm soooo surprised, because I had a very firm mindset of expecting NOTHING from the first, ohhh, DOZEN viewers, lol! And thus not having any stress over people viewing and not showing interest. The house is so cluttered and messy and curtain hems hanging down where the boys have picked at them, crayon on the walls, laundry piles everywhere, etc, etc. I just tidied and cleaned this morning best I could, saying over and over to myself (out loud where necessary!), "I don't mind what they think, they take it as they find it." It helped me stay sane this time (I went a little bit stressy-nuts last time we had a viewing booked, to the point that I cancelled it and got all tearful!). Anyway, yay! We have two more viewings booked tomorrow, plus the partner of this guy who came to see it today. The offer is for £10,000 less than the value price, and we really want/need to get as close to the actual value as possible, but we can just about go with his offer if nobody counters it over the weekend. Aaaaaaaahhh, we're really moving house!!!!! I have just realised how little I have believed that would actually happen! ;) Suddenly I'm nostalgic and wistful and wishing we didn't have to leave the place where Matthew was born and sooooo much has happened. *sniffle*

* I rest my case on my last post where I ranted about playgroups and germs! I had a midwife appt on Wednesday (28 weeks!!!) which I MUST write about in my pregnancy diary, but anyway - it was at the Sure Start centre where they have a playgroup. I had to take the boys this time and Arthur and Matthew played in the big hall while I took Nathan in with me to an adjoining room to see the midwife. It's a GREAT layout and I love it! There are so many fun toys for the boys to explore and play with. There's a "stay and play" programme that runs in the mornings and afternoons 3 days a week, and mine was a lunchtime appointment so we happened to miss the playgroup that ran in the morning. They played with all the toys but there were no other kids, except some big kids who were playing pool with it being Easter holidays. The centre manager stepped out of her office to sit and play cars with my boys the whole time I was with the midwife - so lovely of her! Anyway, so today Arthur has had a sore throat since he got up this morning and is sneezing his little head off. He has woken a couple of times this evening, streaming with cold :( I can't believe we'd go to a playgroup setting with NO CHILDREN and still catch something from the toys!! Tsk! Sick kids were clearly present that morning, even though they'd left by the time we got there. It's the first virus we've had since before Christmas! Thank goodness it's just a cold though and hopefully we'll all just throw it off fast! But, I rest my case. ;)

* Arthur had his first outing to the theatre!! My grandparents were sweet enough to book tickets to a local children's theatre that they used to take ME and my brother to when we were little! I used to go there a lot as a child because it is a FABULOUS place. I had a birthday party there once, and also went to some of the children's workshops in the holidays. It's so nostalgic for me, seeing Arthur go there now! Granny and Grandoug took him on the "big bus" (he has been scared of double decker buses for years, just because he doesn't like the noise close up and the size of them), but he was excited to go on the top deck this time :) He had a great time. The play was aimed at 4-7 year olds so he's at the young end, and my grandparents didn't know if some of it was beyond him, but he kept up with it fine and enjoyed it. He said he was scared of the wolf and the giant though, bless! He had chocolate ice-cream during the interval but he couldn't finish it all. It was REALLY STRANGE with just Matthew and Nathan here! Matthew missed Arthur and was a bit serious. He asked a few times where Arthur was and when he was coming home, and if it would be his turn to go out for a treat next :) He spent a little while at first being a bit mean to Nathan for some reason, poking him and stuff. He went in his chair in the kitchen for that, and then when he came out he seemed to decide to play with Nathan properly, and engaged him eagerly. He does play with Nathan a lot normally, but I think he felt a bit lost without his MAIN playmate! ;) Nathan already plays-with, even at 15 months. He doesn't play alongside or independently only, like I heard 15-month-olds do - perhaps it's because he has his brothers around all the time? Arthur did that only playing alongside other toddlers or just playing independently, but I don't think Matthew did as much. Nathan totally plays WITH his brothers, interacting, trying to talk to them (total babble, he really has no words as such, other than Arthur and Dah (daddy)), and communicating desperately with his eyes (and very expressive eyebrows, so funny!). He will do stuff they ask him to do, if he understands it, and he tries so hard! He loves to play with them! So, he lapped up Matthew's advances, and they sat and played duplo and bricks and stacking things for AGES. Matthew seemed so delighted - he kept calling out to me, "Look Mummy! We playing NICE-Y! We playing TOGEZZER!" Sweetie pies! :)

Nathan went for a nap part-way through Arthur's outing, and then I had the wonderful opportunity to have some good 1-on-1 time with my sweet second-born! But he rejected me!!!! We got a pile of lovely stories to cuddle up and read together, but he wanted to sit and read them over by himself and if I asked him if I could read them to him, he said, "Um, no. No shanks." I felt sad about it, because I wanted to spend the time with him and he was busy doing his thing! Oh well. He did let me give him lots of cuddles just the two of us, when he wasn't "reading" his stories, so that's something! He was sooooooo beamingly joyful to see Arthur as he came through the door when he got home! He kept yelling, "It's Arsur, yaaaaaay! It's Arsur!!!" over and over again, and barely gave Arthur enough room to get in the front door for crowding to get near him! Granny had bought a programme at the theatre and Matthew sat "reading" it really seriously for ages after Arthur was home. If I tried to ask him something or get his attention for something, he just told me, "I busy reading Arsur's book right now." and look back to it!

Sooo that was different. It was less chaotic with Arthur gone for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Less noise and clamour. Only two small children to cater for! The weirdness of only ONE when the other was napping - that's so strange to me now, which is odd because of how it still seems so recent that I only had two, and Matthew was a baby so frequently napping! It was so much quieter. But - I didn't like it. Matthew didn't like it either. I was glad when Arthur came home. It certainly was easier and less hectic, and we enjoyed the different-ness, but I wouldn't like him to be gone on a regular basis like that! I love having them all around all the time :)

Arthur has been reading a 3-word "story" for 3 days running now, in his reading lessons! He was so excited about the first one, because I told him before we started that he would be reading a STORY that day. He could barely wait through the exercises and word reading, and I had to cover things up so he wouldn't skip ahead too much. Finally we were on the page before the story, that is, the story was on the other side of the page we were reading. We had an exercise to do that was just sounding out letters - or sounds, as they're called in the book. It's an easy exercise, and the story was next. He really surprised me! He saw the large print of the three words of the story THROUGH THE PAGE we were reading, and said, "Oooh, that must be my story!!!" I started to say that we'd get to that next and draw his attention back to the sounds, when he put his finger to the paper and said, "It says, "Ssseee, meee, eeaat! - See me eat!" The thing that boggled me is that it was through the page, so the words were back to front, obviously. I didn't even know if he could read the words yet without assistance, let alone grainily through the other side of the paper and back to front!!!! I had absolutely nothing to say, and eventually stammered about finishing the sounds, and when we turned the page I asked him to go through the steps of reading the story he'd already read, haha! He giggled at that, like he'd done something mischievous. I can't believe how fast he's progressing, and I'm so encouraged by his enthusiasm! I really like making note of things here because I haven't really got a place to note them as he's learning, and there's a lot that I want to make note of which I hadn't anticipated. I'm actually not trying to boast in him, honestly! I just want to make note of where I'm particularly surprised by something he does or encouraged (or if there's a difficulty anywhere). Maybe I should start a paper journal for those things? Hmmm.

Okay this is NOT the fly-by I promised, haha! No real surprise there, then! It's so late, but I'm happy that it's the weekend! Neil worked late tonight and getting the boys dinner and ready for bed was easier than last time, which was easier than the time before. They were all in bed asleep or working on it by 7.30pm, so I felt good for that! Matthew was asleep by 6.50pm! He actually needs that kind of bedtime every single day. He really needs his 12 hours of solid sleep. Arthur is less so inclined (takes maybe 10 even if he's tired and needs more, and tends to stir or wake in the night), and Nathan is starting to sleep better too. He settles himself for naps and bedtime, since I've been basically leaving the poor chap to fuss and cry till he goes to sleep! :S I hate doing that, but he hasn't really been hysterical about it. If he does that then I go in and resettle and leave again. He is usually fussing and crying, lying down and trying to sleep, fussing and crying again, etc. If he's irate and miserable and never trying to sleep, I rescue him :) His night wakings are much improved this week, though it always (always!) gets worse after I post that kind of sentence, so I won't hold my breath! Also he's likely to get a cold from his brother so that could be thrown off a bit soon. But the last two nights I have woken more than Nathan, which is a first! I'm now woken more by my FOURTH son than my third, haha! If he rolls into a different position (the one in my tum, this is) in the night, it often triggers a SEARING ligament pain on that side and I wake sort of writhing with it till it subsides. And I'm waking to pee twice a night now too. It's frustrating to wake, tired, and see my sleeping baby there NOT waking me up - but I'm up anyway! Tsk! ;) I've discovered that Nathan DOES stir a lot but is rarely/never fully waking up! One or two times in the night if I'm awake when he stirs, I pat his bottom a few times if it's a "I'm about to wake up!" stirring, and he settles back into a deeper sleep without ever really coming out of it, so that's good. That technique was what started him sleeping better in the first place, I think. That and the daytime/bedtime self-settling. So that's good!

I'm sure there was something else.... Loads else, probably. My parents came over from France for a DAY yesterday! Daddy had a meeting at his studio that he HAD to attend, and Mummy came with him to see her grandchildren! They got the overnight ferry here, she spent the morning with us, had lunch with Daddy, and then the afternoon with Thea and my brother before going home to France on the night ferry again! I think they are coming back (another meeting) the week after next, so hopefully we'll see them again. The boys LOVE Nana and Grandy and it's always wonderful wonderful WONDERFUL to see them! I love my parents, and really miss them now they live abroad. We don't see them very often - sort of when I have a baby and once or twice in between! ;)

Okay, that's it for tonight! I have photos, but once again they're not at my fingertips to post since I just meant to type a quick post! I'll get to them soon!

Huge post about stuff (but I do actually mean thank you!)

I definitely feel it's time for me to post an update, after such a stressed-out post last time and SO MANY comments - thank you!!! I didn't mean to leave such a gap before posting again, but honestly I'm quite boggled by the huge variety of opinions out there and not really sure how to process them all and apply them (one? some? all?!). I also posted at MOMYS (thanks Annie for suggesting it - Neil did too!) and got some wonderful responses there too - fairly different to the ones I got here, I think because most of my blog readers are not quite of the same.... what word am I looking for?.... mindset? (maybe?) as I am, regarding little ones and mothering them and so on. At MOMYS, most of them ARE, so the responses are different. I really did want to get those two different types of opinions, which is why I posted both here and there. I had some similar advice at both places, though, I don't mean to imply it was totally different to what everyone said here! Thanks so so very much to everyone who commented and gave advice, or just said soothing things or let me know you're praying for me. I appreciate it so much! Some of you (with busy, child-filled lives, no less!) left HUGE-O comments, and I know that took a big bite out of your time, so I just want you to know that warmed my heart and made me feel loved, and I just appreciate you guys so much! :) I intended to write a big "Responses!" post tonight, to comment on lots of different things people said, but now that I sit here tired at the end of a busy day with the littlies, it's just beyond me! I may get to it eventually though, and probably will comment on bits and pieces as they come to mind as I'm writing posts for a while.

I know a lot of people mentioned how I'm germ-phobic, or just basically really afraid of the boys getting sick. I have been thinking this over a lot this past week, really thinking about it. Because it's not good. But I think that's exaggerated, and to the average out-at-playgroups-all-the-time mama, I am probably a pretty weird mother in that respect, and the fact that I talk about not liking the germ aspect at large gatherings of children probably turns that weirdness into an obvious-looking problem with germophobia, or something! Honestly, I DO get anxious about the boys getting sick with things that would knock us all out. I have no idea how we'd function if the parents were too sick to care for the children (whether they were sick too or not). It's plain no fun having more than 1 or 2 ill small children at once to look after, when you're also ill! Which, I know is the same experience for everyone. But it's kind of understandable therefore to have a certain level of anxiety over the whole bunch of us going under with something horrible. That's ALL I'm worried about, honestly. I'm really not as germ-phobic as everyone seems to think!

We used to go to playgroups. The big one with 75 toddlers - ill every single time we went, all year round. With like 3 exceptions all year or something, urgh! I persevered with Arthur when he was Nathan's age and I was pregnant with Matthew, for several months until it just seemed crazy and I wanted to give his immune system a break! Mine was okay, but he seemed to be getting so run down, and it didn't seem natural to have him so exposed to SO many viruses week after week after week. So we stopped going. Any time we went back over the next 18 months, whether it was December or July, we got sick. We also went to a small playgroup run by my church now and then. I mostly stopped going to that because it became such a pain to attend when Matthew was in his first year. He liked his naps regular and long. And at home in his cot, thank you very much! ;) Everything had to work around his naps, and we would basically turn up there as they were finishing up and Arthur would run about during the tidy up time and then we'd come home again. Don't feel sorry for Arthur there though - I read it back and instinctively thought, "Aw, poor Arthur!" but he was FINE. He didn't ever ask to go, miss going, or wonder if we might go. He was equally contented at home as when we were at groups. He never showed any displeasure at all when we left groups, and once or twice asked to go home early, I think just because he got tired or had had enough of all the noise or whatever! Or just wanted lunch! ;) The effort involved got too much, so we stopped, but it took me a LONG time to let myself drop the groups and feel okay about it, since EVERYONE takes their kids to groups, it seems, so if I didn't then I must be doing something wrong, you know?

These days I will happily have playdates (as we don't really call them, but anyway! ;) ) with other kids as and when, and not have any worries about if the kids are coming with colds or whatever. I totally know that the boys will go out there and pick up colds and such, and that's okay. It does irritate me when somebody brings a heavily streaming child to play, clearly THICK with a horrible and highly infectious cold or other similar virus, though. Because, where's the courtesy in that?! I always appreciate it when mothers call me first and say, "Oh, he's got a cold right now, is it still okay to come round?" I pretty much say yes, don't worry about it (even if it's not always my favourite thought in the world that they're bringing us a cold!), but sometimes I ask if it has been a really horrid one, and once or twice I have actually asked if it would be okay if we reschedule, because on those occasions the boys had just been getting over like their 4th cold in a row (back to back - we had 2 really fun months before Christmas!) and were sub-par and had been miserable with the last one. Or the other time, Nathan was acting teethy and had the remnants of a cold still, and was sleeping HORRIBLY. I just thought that I did not want to INVITE heavy congestion and worse sleep, when I was being given the option not to! ;) So I said no thanks!

At playgroups and at church creche, mothers bring their babies and toddlers who are at the mouthing-everything-in-sight stage, streaming with heavy feverish colds, fresh from vomiting the day before (does NOBODY seem to know that all vomiting bugs are infectious for 3 full days after the last vomit or diarrhoea?! Honestly and truly, NO mother I talk to seems to have this piece of information! Aaargh!), or whatever. And not just, oh it's an occasional risk that this might happen, nope. Mothers bring their little ones in this stage EVERY. SINGLE. WEEK. Obviously not the same children each week, but across the general membership, there are sick sick sick children in creche/playgroup every ding dong week! Then, I take my healthy, mouthing-everything-in-sight children to the same group and voila, 2-3 weeks of misery (small babies take 2-3 weeks to deal with a cold, not the 7 days or less of a toddler/child), during which time I have to decide whether to let them back to the same germy group while they're still feeling under the weather, or keep them off. I honestly find it really difficult to justify sending my own children into a room full of other children when I know full-well they are infectious with ANY sort of virus. It just seems wrong! I actually had a time where I tried to just push that feeling aside and continue, because one of the mums at church (who also went to playgroups with us) told me that the "rule" out there is that you should always go to playgroups the same as usual if they have a cold, because otherwise you'd never go out anywhere - they always have colds! That did NOT sit right with me, but eventually when Arthur had his run of a million viruses from the big playgroup, I stood tall and bit my lip and took him there anyway. I absolutely could not keep that up, because I'd look at the other sweet little kids, and mine with a streaming nose handing them a toy he'd just mouthed, and I felt so bad for the other little ones! Yes, they probably get colds all the time and it's no big deal, and children "deal" with viruses and keep going as everyone says, but I don't buy it. Kids don't have any say! I bet they wouldn't choose to catch a cold, and no children have any fun when they're full of cold! I think it's more the mothers who are getting used to dealing with colds in their children. Arthur did just breeze on with life after the first bunch of colds he ever got, except really bad ones that made him miserable, but that's no reason to assume that other kids will breeze on and it won't bother them. I just can't feel okay going around making other kids ill (even mildly, to be honest), and I'm sure that steps on toes here because I know I'm about the ONLY crazy mother who doesn't take her kids places when they have colds, but anyway. I tried to shove my feelings aside on it, but I couldn't justify it in the end. So, we don't go spreading colds to others, and I don't like it when others knowingly do so to us - simple as that. But, the boys WILL get colds and stuff, and that's just something inconvenient and difficult to deal with as and when it arises - NOT something I'm anxious or phobic about!! Just to clarify! :)

Now, the vomiting, that's slightly different because as lots of you know, I have struggled BIG TIME with emitophobia since I was a toddler. I think my phobia is actually the best it has ever been now, which surprises me! I would not even call it a phobia any more, which is a BIG deal for me to be able to say! I would certainly call it an anxiety, and a big one, but it doesn't go to "phobic" any more I don't think. I don't obsess, and I haven't actually panicked about it in a very long time, even when thinking about it or contemplating the possibility of getting sick. Which is a big big big wonderful thing to be able to say!! :D I don't even know what has finally improved things for me in that department, I'm completely baffled! I do get scared if someone here is throwing up, especially if it's infectious and I could get it, BUT I can't tell you how different life is for me without the daily panicking and obsessive behaviour that I used to have in my teens and early 20s.

Arthur exhibits the same kind of panic about vomiting that I did when I was little. His stems from a bad gastroenteritis he had at 23 months old. Bad. And, as my mum puts it, his "control issues" that he inherited from his mother. *sigh*) I never knew such awful stomach bugs existed when I was a child! I'm actually pretty sure they DIDN'T, and things are way worse these days. The difference with poor Arthur is he happens to get stomach things BADLY, like Neil did as a child. He throws up and throws up and throws up and throws up and throws up and throws up (seemingly forever, and it must seem so much worse to him) when everyone else here who gets it throws up once. Or just the other end. Apart from NEVER WANTING ANOTHER STOMACH BUG AS LONG AS I LIVE (ahem!), I will do what I can to limit the number of stomach bugs Arthur is exposed to. If people didn't take their kids out in public after they've been throwing up (however mildly THEIR kids seemed to be affected, tsk! OTHER people might not be so lucky!) in the window where they're still infectious (3 full days, remember?) then I wouldn't have such a time with this, or such a bother with going to groups and creche. Nor would such bugs be so commonplace, due to basic infection control by parents. It's a huge bug-bear for me - sorry I'm sounding venty and irritable. I AM irritable about this subject! It bugs me no end. *sigh* And the same applies to colds, really. They don't bother us - they're an annoyance, but every time they get one I just think, "Oh well, at least their immune systems are working on something!" and deal. But there's a chain of people, you know? You might not bother about the other kids you're happily exposing to your child's virus, but I personally know people who have had issues like, say, they have a newborn who ends up in hospital because of colds brought to playgroup (not that they'd have taken their newborn to playgroup, because they didn't want to expose the littlie to the germs brought there, but they didn't want their toddler to be bored, so he went and caught the stuff there instead and brought it home). Or someone whose ailing grandmother lives with them and a cold could be threatening for her. This lady had no choice in the end but to regretfully pull her son out of playgroup because of the risk to her MIL, since everybody brought sick kids to playgroup every week and the risk was unnaturally high.

I'm not worried at ALL about exposing my little ones to NATURAL risk, like going out, socialising with people of all ages, shopping, playing at the swings or the park, etc. But it seems impossible to find groups of small children in any context where the risks of catching viruses are UNNATURAL because of the fact that parents send/bring their children in knowing that they are virally infectious. There are one or two pre-school playgroups (ENDLESS WAITING LISTS, unsurprisingly!) in my local area which state clearly that no child is to be allowed to the group with any evidence or knowledge of infectious viral symptoms of any kind. I imagine those groups are full of kids who get sick WAY less than everywhere else! Now if only all groups were like that, socialising little ones wouldn't be the germy pot-luck it is every time the group meets and the frequency of illnesses wouldn't be so extreme overall.

I guess I'm not PHOBIC, just annoyed about the lack of common courtesy, and the sheer crazy amount of nasty viruses that are there for the taking all the time these days. Arthur is in Sunday School at church now, being over the age of 3, and he does occasionally come home with colds, but it's NOTHING like the little ones in the creche room. I figure it's because the 3-6 year olds are not constantly mouthing toys and passing them around! ;) We'd be going much more regularly over this past winter if we could keep the little ones out of creche - I'm happy to let Arthur loose in Sunday School and risk a few colds and such (though, honestly, he was picking up some BAD attitudes from other kids there - at CHURCH?!!! Tsk!). They don't miss being in creche, but when we're there I don't want the little ones to be hankering after that room full of toys where ALL the other little ones are and not being let to go there. That just seemed mean, so we stopped going for a while. I think it wasn't the right thing to do to just NOT go to church. Going to church is important for us as a family, and for our spiritual walks individually. It's so important to get fellowship and good teaching, and to worship together with others, sooooo important. I don't know. I haven't been sure of any decisions we've made lately (except the family-size-in-God's-hands one! :) ), that's for sure.

I was pretty eager for Jemma's recent visit with Jove to result in chicken pox for the boys!! ;) He came down with it 5 days later. The boys didn't get it (we're out of the window now), but most places I read said it's infectious 2-3 days before the rash, so we probably missed it anyway. I really want them to get chicken pox, because it's important to get it when they're little and not a BAD version when they're older. We don't have a chicken pox vaccine here, but I'm glad of that, because I don't think chicken pox vaccines are a good idea at ALL. I don't know anything about it, but I'm thinking TONS of cases of kids with shingles in the future of countries who do that, off the top of my head. And chicken pox is a picnic compared with shingles!

Ummm.... where did I get to/come from?! I have ranted and waffled for ages, and I'm not sure why I started or where I was heading! ;) I'm absolutely not digging at anyone, and it's just my opinion, which I know will differ from lots of other people's opinions. Knowing that does not mean I intend a debate with this post! I really don't like those. So, please don't take it that way. I was just expressing my (extreme!) irritation over something! Ohhh, I remember, I started out just clarifying that I'm not actually acting this way out of anxiety about illnesses - I think people reckon I have a problem with anxiety over it and it's affecting my children and the way I let them do things. But it's not that dramatic, honestly! Going to groups is a pain in MANY ways, difficult to time, extremely exhausting, usually not fun for at least one of my children who have to come along with their sibling(s), and the whole day gets thrown out of whack with fitting in naps and meals. Seriously. The sickness part is the clincher for me - it's not that easy or enjoyable in the first place (I'm not just talking about me here!) and then if we're all going to get sick anyway, then fine, we'll just give it a miss! ;)

Now, if we DO get to a group, usually at least one of the boys enjoys it and it eats up a nice chunk of the day's energies for them. They DON'T like a bunch of yelling noisy kids. They don't like other kids snatching toys and not sharing, or hitting, or so on. My mum says it's important that they get exposed to a whole lot of toddler-bullying (okay, those are my words, tsk!) so they experience the ways of the world and I get to teach them about it as they experience it. Yeah, that's ONE way of doing it! Forgive my bristling hormonal irritability - I'm honestly not usually this antagonistic (maybe not the right word for it, but I can't think of another right now) about stuff, especially bloggy stuff where it can seem even harsher with only the text to look at. It's just stuff that bugs me and doesn't doesn't doesn't sit right with me no matter how I try to stay open to such ideas or try it out that way for a while, etc. Of course the children will meet bullies in life when they're older, but they don't HAVE to be exposed to it from an early age to learn about it. I really don't think so. I don't plan that to be a big old shock to them later on in childhood when they encounter it, after I've taught them never to behave like that, at home with each other. They'll know bullies exist and what kind of behaviour characterises them, and hopefully how to deal with them.

Anyway. They don't like mean kids or noisy kids, or a group that's just overwhelming all the time. They like to play with each other, and don't ever ask about going to see other children or playgroups, or seem lacking in that department - I know some of you said that their behaviour suggests that perhaps they ARE lacking, but I'm not sure that's true. I don't think a child NEEDS other children of the same age to stay sane and happy during childhood. I think that's what we DO in society, and has been discovered to have great benefits for the children (playmates, etc) but it's not actually necessary. I do think siblings are plenty enough in terms of playmates, especially those who are blessed to be close in age to a sibling or two (or more, even better!). Arthur's best friend is Matthew, as he tells me, and he's not kind of worryingly attached to his brother because he's secluded and has no choice and they rely on each other to feel secure, or anything like that. They fight and argue as much as we try to limit that! But they play together all day and would not have it any other way. Going out of our way to find a "friend" for Arthur his own age would likely increase the options for Arthur as far as playmates are concerned, but why go there if he HAS the constant playmate he desires, right here at home? We do socialise with other 4-year-olds, and he gets on with one or two of them really well. He likes to see them, and if we see them a lot over a shortish period of time, he will be sad if we can't see them for a longer spell like if they're away or something. But he would vastly prefer to spend his time with Matthew. I don't like the whole "best buds against siblings!" thing that goes on with children who go to school. I KNOW, not all of them do this! But the majority do, and we're told it's normal, and part of a child's normal developmental do-dahs. But I disagree. Arthur never has that mentality unless he's repeatedly exposed to other children "his age" who will lead the way in unkindly pushing away THEIR younger siblings with taunting voices, and then after a long while (or two or three visits), he will start to do the same with THEIR younger siblings just to join in what they're doing, and if we continue exposing him to that, he'll eventually start doing the same to his own younger brother. Which, we're not prepared to allow. Other children are teaching him something that is not right, and I don't want him exposed to some of that stuff while he's so little and impressionable. It doesn't come naturally to exclude siblings unkindly, without outside influence. Frustration at younger siblings definitely leads to the desire to have time without those annoyances! ;) Arthur sometimes exhibits plenty of evidence of this. But we are teaching them that their brothers are their best friends, and that they don't exclude or talk or behave unkindly to others, especially their best friends. We always acknowledge the frustrations and try to provide time out from such pressures where necessary, but they are to learn to share and include each other, and also to gradually learn the stages of babyhood and toddlerhood and the limitations those pose to that little child's ability to play this or understand that. They ARE getting it, but it's something we are constantly working on.

I remember one time a few months ago (before Christmas?) at fellowship group, one of the ladies there had a baby who crawled up to Arthur and took a toy from him. She was amazed that he responded so calmly and acceptingly, and just got on with the same game he was playing with a different toy. She even emailed me afterwards to comment on it again, saying other children his age had not had that kind of reaction to her little one grabbing toys! I said that he was used to it, but that's not really what I meant. I meant that he is continually learning (being taught by us) about what babies do and what they can understand and can't understand, and why they grab and the best thing to do about it (and not do!). I'm glad he is learning that from us, and not learning a different response by example in a group of other children his age who are reacting "differently" to a baby crawling up and grabbing their toys! That's just one example of many on why we are focusing on home and home-schooling, and not groups of other same-aged children, for the boys' early years. It's such a formative time.

Yes, we're struggling with their behaviour, and we are SOOOO not experts! But we strongly feel that we're doing the right thing for them. Arthur in particular is very impressionable, highly sensitive and volatile - "highly strung", if you will - just as part of his particular personality and character. Not so much his brothers. He's very like me in that respect, but more so. He CAN be easy-going and relaxed, and sometimes is (which I was a little more than he is) but yeah. It's particularly for Arthur that we're feeling the NEED to keep him close and educate him at home (for other reasons than the keep-him-close thing, but that holds too). He needs more stimulation and we need to work on that. Maybe that's all it is, even? They get outside a couple of hours every day. They run and play and dig and drive and race and shout and all that boy stuff (!), without me standing over them (I do housework, or - bliss! - read or lie on the sofa on a REALLY good day when Nathan's nap coincides, hehe!). They do LONG walks and rambles on Saturday and Sunday at the humongous park with Daddy. When our day goes according to plan (we could do with a bit more routine to it, which might help too), the boys help with housework (they love this), I read aloud to them a lot, they play together with cars constantly, we build train tracks that Nathan can't mess up during his naps, Arthur has school during Nathan's morning nap, they do puzzles and pretend play, and sometimes we manage a craft or baking. What I really want to do is increase the craft/baking activities. They LOVE those! But I am finding that it's hard to fit any more activities into our day with all that other stuff! It's not that the day drags boringly by for them - though believe me, sometimes it DOES when I haven't got it together or am feeling exhausted or unwell or something. They do best when each "thing" we do is followed immediately by another thing, however passive or simple, even a meal will do. So long as there isn't a gap between activities where Mummy says, "Okay boys, I have to just lie on the floor for a bit because I'm exhausted right now!" which unfortunately is happening more and more now that I'm in my 3rd trimester! Those "gaps" tend to be when the TV is switched on, and then once the TV is on, it's all too easy for it to stay on longer than necessary and they then get fidgetty and bored, understandably so.

So much to think about and "fix"! It overwhelms me one moment (most moments lately!) and then I will suddenly wake up clear-headed about it and full of energy and determination with ideas to sort this or that out. Easter weekend was lovely and relaxed, but it let me just feel lethargic and more foggy of brain than ever. It has actually been a great thing to get to Tuesday and Neil back to work, to have the motivation to pull myself together again, clean the house and get back on track with the boys' day. I have less energy week by by week at the moment - I had some GREAT energy back there for a while! :) Housework tires me more, and by the time I made lunch for the boys today (11.45am, not late by any means!), my hand was shaking like crazy as I tried to spread their sandwiches with the knife, because my own blood sugar had just pregnantly "crashed" and I needed my own lunch, STAT! ;) I got theirs first, but I'm wondering if I should just drop everything and feed myself if that keeps happening? It took me a while to recover and trying to seat them and serve them was very hard with weak shakes like that, and I started to feel dizzy too. Things are definitely shifting into 3rd trimester mode for me lately, and I have to make allowances for that, I guess.

Arthur's school is going well! We did Lesson 12 of "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" today (we missed our first day in the whole thing so far, yesterday), and Arthur read his first two 4-letter words - "seed" and "seat"! He is reading 3-letter-words each day, and has learned 7 sounds now - 'm', 's', 'a', 'eee', 't', 'r', and today he learned 'd'. He's so excited about it, but he does get bored of some of the exercises, especially the very repetitive ones and the rhyming games. He just wants to READ! ;) I have had to start covering up all the words except what we're about to read, because he will jump ahead. He jumps ahead on everything we do, and is starting to miss my explanations because he's reading the next word and not listening, or something, and then he makes mistakes and gets frustrated. So I'm covering words. But then I just have to take my hand off the next word and start to say the accompanying script (yes, it's totally scripted!) and I will say two words of it before he says, "Oooh, it's got THREE sounds! sss-a-t - SAT!!" and be highly excited about it, while I'm still saying, "... so get ready to sound it out!" It sounds good, and it IS good that he's eager and able, but it can get frustrating if he isn't listening and then I have to go back over things because he needed to hear them to understand the next step or something! Tomorrow (I think?) is his first story!! Just three words - "see me eat" with a picture of a man eating next to it :) I know he's going to be so excited about that. I have to cover the picture until he's read the "story". It's going so well. He has to write two sounds each lesson in his writing book. His writing is visibly improving already (letter formation, that is), but I still have to put the pencil in his hand right each time, because he just wants to WRITE ALREADY, and not bother with such distractions as holding the pencil in a certain way before he begins! ;) He gets a sticker for completing each lesson and when his writing is really good he gets a sticker next to his letters in his writing book. He was starting to award himself quite generously, sticker sheet in hand, haha! But I took over administering stickers and told him I won't be giving out stickers for writing every day - only when it's especially good :) I thought the stickers would be a good added extra, and they're going down well! I ordered some from eBay this weekend - large sparkly coloured stars for the completion of each lesson, and smaller sparkly coloured smiley faces to put next to especially good work :) I'm excited like a small child about those stickers arriving, hehe!

I've also become freshly confident about teaching Arthur beyond reading, as we've progressed with teaching him to read a little. It feels like it's starting to fall into place in my head. The reading book is an accelerated learning course, and should be completed within 4 or 5 months. I will give birth and do the postpartum thing with a new baby in the middle of that time, so I expect it will take more like 5-6 months for us, even with us having lessons at weekends like we do. I will try to keep the routine going as normally as possible for the boys, but I do plan to totally REST UP for the 2 weeks that Neil has on paternity leave after the baby is born. That will stand me in the best position to pick up and continue when he goes back to work. If I attempt to do any of my usual stuff in that time, I don't think I will be as well recovered come week 3 when I'm on my own again! It's not very taxing to teach Arthur to read, and it's great one-on-one time, so I will try to continue it as often as possible during those 2 weeks, while I'm at home (if I give birth in hospital and stay any time to recover a bit), but I do want to consider the possibility that I won't manage it or something. So it might take us up to 6 months.

Which takes us to September! September 2009 is the month Arthur should be starting school if he is not being homeschooled. He turns 5 in November, so he would start school in September. I am really happy with the idea that he will be able to read fluently by then, AND it feels like a perfect smooth transition to other "school" things as the reading lessons come to an end, coinciding with September so prettily, hehe! I know we don't have to follow the school academic year, but I'm like lots of others who can just SMELL school supplies with an autumn breeze or the leaves turning, or the days shortening and the air getting cooler. School time, folks! ;) So I will be happy to get to a fresh "year" of school every September. It just feels natural! :)

In September, Arthur will have learnt to read, and just finished the lessons. So, I'm thinking after breakfast the boys will have outdoor time, and then come in and have "reading time". Reading time will consist of me hearing Arthur read as he practises from books. I won't call that "school", just "reading time", and I'll finish it with the reading out-loud that I'm doing now, from books that are older than the boys' age range (the "Little House" series right now - we just finished "Little House in the Big Woods" and we're several chapters into the 2nd book - "Little House on the Prairie", and Arthur is still loving it!). Then for actual "school" - I'm not sure when to do it. I am thinking morning would be better maybe, and switch outdoor time to the afternoon? But I like the outdoor time and a "head" activity next to each other... Anyway, that might have to be worked around things with the baby(ies!) when it comes to it. But for actual school, I can smoothly move onto teaching Arthur handwriting and spelling, from the learning to read book. He will have learned to write all his letters and sounds, and to read many many words, six or seven letters long, and complicated sentences (the last lesson is a 200-word story!!). So spelling and handwriting seem to be the next obvious (and very straightforward, hopefully!) step. I am going to spend the next few months researching a curriculum (or methods) for basic maths, although I might not add that to "school" for the first few months - we'll see. I see no need to rush anything at his age really. Reading and writing by the time he's 5 will be a great start as it is, and adding the 3rd 'r' ('rithmetic!) will be great when it seems a good time to throw it in there. It may seem like school is packed full with just handwriting and spelling at first, and I want to keep it to SHORT sessions while he's this little, like we are now (15 minutes per day at the moment, that is all!!!). If it seems like he's really ready to add more, or there's time when he'd like to keep going, I'll start the maths. I want to have it ready, to know what I'm going to teach him and how, for September just in case. Then, the only other thing I'm interested in adding to his school for when he's 5 is Nature Study. I got the idea (and fell in love with it!) from this post at Raising Olives (by the way, a wonderful blog with a ton of great tips and ideas for large homeschooling families!). The post explains it all, but basically it's a mish-mash of science, art, observation, writing, and research. It sounds wonderful, and something Arthur would LOVE. If I am teaching him to do Nature Study every day and reading, writing, spelling and maths every day at the age of 5, I will be very very happy and satisfied with what we are doing at school. Of course we're free to throw in spontaneous history, science, art or geography lessons at any given time ;) And take trips to places if we're able (ideally) to boost or inspire these things. And I'm thinking French, definitely, pretty early. My parents live in France and so he's already had the wonderful experience on our last visit there, of them taking him out for walks and to local shops, and having him say, "Bonjour" and "Merci" to friendly villagers, ALL of whom stop to talk to them when they're out and about, as French locals tend to do. My mum tells me he is confident in being approached and spoken to by elderly people speaking fast French! And also confident and clear-spoken saying the words she teaches him to say to them. He also understands other words in French through having heard them said to him and then my mum explaining them to him - he still remembers that everyone he meets there will give him "bees" (bises = kisses!) when he says hello or goodbye to them! :) So, French should be a given, I think, and there's no need to start early or wait either, just whenever it seems good, and not too far in the future. I can teach him a fair way since I studied it to A-level, but I'm rusty and will need to study with him eventually, I can tell! ;) My parents are eager for him to go and stay with them for holidays (maybe 2 boys at a time, they say?) for a week when he's a couple of years older. He gets on wonderfully with them, so I think that will go down very well! They're keen to socialise him with the village and have him talking to people when he's there, and they do it in a very encouraging and fun way so it will work well for him I think.

Okay, I've just realised how late it's getting and how very LONG and rambly this post is getting! I reeeeally need a drink of water too. I hope I didn't offend anyone with my ranty stuff earlier, as it wasn't intended - just an expression of irritation, or something to that effect! ;) I know I will clash with people's opinions, but hopefully it won't spark anger or protest! I'm just a-bloggin' in my blog. Feel free to ignore me if you disagree with me ;)

I NEED to post photos! And I have a ton of videos that are steadily getting out of date, just stacked up waiting to be seen! Actually I could just quickly put some of those at the end of this post, and then at least they're HERE and not waiting to be posted, even though that will make them a bit random, to say the least! Some of them are of Nathan at 13 months, doing "new" stuff, so it's now old-ish stuff and I must get those posted before it gets ridiculous!

Here's one of Arthur and Matthew that's just totally random and only a few seconds long. Arthur has used my camera to destruction - he takes photos and videos every day, and now my camera (not that old!) is not working properly. It keeps deleting photos randomly so that every time I switch it back on, more are missing than before. I have taken SUCH lovely photos of the boys (especially Nathan) over the last week and all but one or two have disappeared because the camera is broken and keeps deleting them! So, I have bought a new camera. Neil has been bugging me - bugging me, seriously! - to get a digital SLR the next time I need a new camera. He wanted me to get one the last time when I bought this camera, but I am nervous about the expense (we didn't have any money at the time anyway, and those things are EXPENSIVE!) and whether I'll justify the purchase with the way I use the camera. I used to really really want to get into photography. I was looking into courses before I got pregnant with Arthur, and when Arthur was little I was so eager to learn stuff to improve. I wanted to pack him up and go to beautiful places and take photographs and improve the skill. After Matthew, I wanted to be able to take skillful photos of the children, but had little time or energy for much else! But Neil thinks I really should take it up, and I would LOVE to as well. I feel nervous that it's an expectation if I buy a DSLR, that I should be persuing it and if I don't have time or energy then it's a wasted purchase, you know? So I was happy to buy a point-and-shoot again last time. This time, God has blessed us to be able to afford extra things and also to pay off our debt and move to a bigger home!!! I am not in the least bit surprised (I told you he would! ;) ) even though it seemed like a not-gonna-happen back when we had no income at all only a year ago! God is so wonderfully GOOD!!! :D And the camera is bust. So... I bought a digital SLR! Eeep! I researched and researched, and finally went with Kim's review of her Sony Alpha 300. So I bought one!!! I am thinking about setting aside a little time every Friday evening to study up on the "how to"s of photography (or the camera itself - the manual could take forever to read and absorb!), because on my Motivated Moms list, one of the things to check off on Fridays is spending time on a craft or hobby. I rarely rarely check that off. So I could try to do a little photography learning or practise on Fridays, and maybe make some progress that way? I hope I can do it, because I would love to learn to use such a camera well and take (much!) better photographs.

Anyhow, my new camera is coming this week on order, yay! It doesn't have the video function that I've been used to on my point-and-shoot, so I will have to dig out the OLD video camera and find the battery charger (if this is even a possibility!) if I want to video the boys any more! Talking of videos.... Here's the one I STARTED to tell you about! ;) I was upstairs putting Nathan down for a nap. I was only gone a few minutes that time, and later in the evening when I was looking through the stuff on the camera, I found this tiny little clip. It made me smile, and being TINY it uploaded quickly, so here it is :)

Here's little Nathan at 13 months (he's FIFTEEN months now, as of Easter weekend!! That's one and a quarter! Aaaahhh! He's growing up so fast!), just bumbling about, dancing a bit and "singing" to the Kathryn Scott's "Thank you for the cross" :) If the starting picture below shows it sideways on, that's not how the video is! I don't know why it's showing isdeways on, but anyway.

This one was taken the same afternoon. Nathan was helping me fold (haha!) the tumble dry load, and I finally managed to get him on video doing his new (at the time) thing of understanding me when I ask him to put some item of dirty laundry in the kitchen (we process and sort in the kitchen - everything goes over the safety gate in the kitchen doorway to be processed). It was CLEAN, but never mind! ;)

Nathan again at 13 months, playing with "drums" and things in the kitchen while the older two were outside in the garden burning off energy! Lately (just this past week or so) I have started letting Nathan out in the garden with the older two. We found a red ants nest on the grass today. Not good! So I didn't let him stay out long today. But before, he used to play in the kitchen like this, or opening and shutting cupboards and rearranging their contents (!) while I did kitchen-related housework or made dinner:

This last one is Nathan walking, at 13.5 months. I hadn't taken any videos of him walking since he first started, and I wanted a comparison for a couple of months later (he started at 11.5 months). Obviously this is pretty out of date now - I wish I'd posted it at the time, tsk! - he's trying to RUN now, and do funny little attempts and jumping and dancing with his brothers (sooooo cute!), but oh well - here it is now anyway. He's a sweet little pea pickle! :)

Okay, VERY last one, I promise! ;)

This is a short little clip of the boys one morning when I was feeling exhausted. I put some worship music on and told the boys I was going to lie on the sofa for a few minutes. To my amazement, they stopped whatever game it was they were playing, both headed for the bookshelves, selected books, and went over to the sofa to sit and read! They didn't say a word, the just did it! I didn't suggest it or anything. When Arthur finished a book, he handed it to Matthew, who looked at that one while Arthur read another one he got from the shelf, and so on. They did this for like 20 minutes!!! Nathan climbed on me and chatted :) I just lay there amazed, and finally grabbed the camera to capture it for the record! Now, it's not that amazing at all, because they love to do this most days. They have a LOT of books so it can last a while! ;) It's lovely. And lovelier still, Nathan joins in and often they're in a little row, all consumed by their story books, Nathan just as much as the others, though he often holds the books upside-down, bless him! ;) Often it's just Nathan and Matthew who decide to read together for a while. I have photos, but not this time. I'll be back soon, I promise!
